We pause today – v2

We pause today, to pray,
to remember their sacrifice;
We pause today to thank
our nation’s veterans,
those who answered the call
of our country to military service.

We thank them for their service,
for their love, for their sacrifice,
for their choice to stand
in the breach for freedom.
Without them and their service,
we would not be free today.

We also thank their loved ones
the families of these veterans,
and especially the families of those
servicemen and women who
paid the ultimate price, who died,
to secure and sustain our freedoms.

We cannot overstate
our gratitude for our veterans,
for their choice to serve
and for those who are serving still
in the dark places, dangerous places,
all around our world.

Fair to Compare – v5

It is fair to compare them to Christ
though they are flawed
their human motives blur in time,
they are not so pure of heart
as the One who climbed the cross

But it is fair to compare
their sacrifice for us,
for the greater good,
not focused on themselves
that we would be free

So many of our veterans
those who chose to serve
carrying our burden
sacrificing all for us
that we would be free

Like Christ, they were in service,
submitting their will,
for a greater purpose
Offering their lives for us
that we would truly live

Reminding me of Christ – v4

So human, so real
their sacrifice complete
serving our nation
that we would be free

offering their lives
reminding me of Christ
giving their all
helping us to believe

in something nobler yet
the Dream that is America
the love of God revealed
in the sacrifice of Christ

called to offer our lives
to give as they have
as He did, for all of us,
that God’s kingdom would come

down here to earth
that the age would close
peace washing over us
grace to fill our hearts

life in sacrifice
joy in servanthood
giving as they did,
nobly, for us

His Sacrifice Greater – v3

Understanding in a small way
some of what He gave
in the gift they gave
His sacrifice greater
the consequence immense

Yet on these days
of memory of their service
of what they gave for us
A hint of the grace of God
in coming to the earth

His gift unconditional
not based on our worth
not to country alone, but to all of us
Giving His all for us
that we could have new birth

Their sacrifice reminding us
of what He did for Man
taking on our stain
Going the way of the cross
part of the Father’s plan

His Sacrifice – v3

His sacrifice complete
Knowing what was to come
Coming down to earth
going to the cross

His sacrifice unfathomable
Choosing to die for us
Living humbly as a servant
taking on our stain

Turning His life over
Paying the ultimate price
Sacrificing himself on the cross
that we would live again

His sacrifice complete
Giving us freedom
Showing us love
in humble sacrifice

Hearing the martyrs, the heroes – v5

In the cadence of their marching
echoes coming, in time,
The flow of the celebration
in the stillness within me
Hearing the martyrs
the heroes who sacrificed
Those who went on to glory
to defend our beliefs.

Listen we must, be still, be quiet,
to the whispers of the fallen
Teaching us much, through sacrifice,
of how to walk in this life
Something grander, important,
more meaningful than consumption
Sacrifice for our nation
for what we all hold dear.

Standing When They Passed – v4

Rising as they approached
the girls and I
like the others
on the parade route
seated on the curb,
some in lawn chairs
as the bands marched by

Rising from our seats
a simple gesture, thanks,
standing when they passed
the ones who fought for us
who served when they were called
carrying our country’s colors
for which so many paid the price

Applauding as they walked by
stopping to honor
those who fought and died
buried in some foreign grave
for our freedoms still
those who came home again
and those fighting for us now.

Because they served – v3

Remember them always
those who went for us
into harm’s way
to guard, to protect us

Because they served
we have life, liberty
Happiness inside
what we make of it

our hope, our dream
as a people as a nation
bound in the service,
in their sacrifice

Because they served
and sacrificed for us
we are convicted, challenged
to make this world, this nation,
better than we found it

Because of their service – v3

Because of their service
carrying their cross
their burden
choosing to serve
paying an awful cost

The pain of their scars
sometimes hidden
of what they have seen
some going to the grave
that we may truly live

Because of their service
we have freedom
we are a nation of opportunity
not held by the yoke
of foreign oppression

Thanking a Veteran – v6

In the winter, in the summer
wherever we see the stars and stripes,
those who have bravely served,
those who went into battle for us
to keep us free.

Stop and thank them, the veterans,
for they stood in the breach;
they faced danger, horror,
standing up for our freedoms
because freedom isn’t free.

Acknowledge their sacrifice,
for what they  witnessed,
for some never came back,
others still wounded in ways
only they can comprehend.

Stop and thank them, the veterans,
for some are not here to hear you
whether of this generation or the last;
all of them choosing to serve
to go when our nation called.
