Working in the vineyard

Following our brother’s call
to go into the world
working in the vineyard
out of a sense of joy

Calling others to him
to the feet of Christ
hoping they will turn
in the way of the cross

Wanting to be with him
to see paradise
striving to grow closer
to see the face of Christ

Toiling out of a sense of Joy

Working in the vineyards
in the fields of the Lord
toiling not to earn salvation
toiling out of a sense of joy

Working to share God’s message
to pour out our gifts
seeking to bring others
to the saving grace of Christ

Seeing with the heart of God

Our faith strengthened
our walk more secure
wanting to carry God’s message
out into this world

Seeing with the heart of God
not with eyes of this world
wanting to see the stranger
as a child of the word

Each of us worthy
by the grace of the living Christ
each of us made holy
by the sacrifice on the cross

Needing to Change

Needing to change
to see with God’s eyes
the truth of our failing
the tears in God’s eyes

Wanting to have us
to come to him
answering his call
knowing how often we turn
running from his arms

Needing to change
to feel our neighbors pain
rejoicing whenever they come to God
receiving the crown of life
wanting only the best for them
the grace of the living God
not judging anyone unworthy
the Lord God loves them all

Search within our Hearts

Are we happen for grace
for the arms of God’s love
are we happy for the grace
the mercy of God’s love
are we happy for all who believe
who receive the reward of grace
the mercy of the cross
raising us from the grave
are we happy for God’s love
for the arms of God’s grace
are we happy for all who wear
the crown of eternal life

No Rights before God

Humble, clay
before the judgment seat
none of us better, worthy
when eternity we meet

No rights before God
all fallen, in sin
only faith, grace
to let us, humbly, in

God’s gift alone
treating us the same
the grace of Christ
the blood of the lamb

We are made worthy
by the sacrifice, the cross
only through this gift
are we saved from the lost

All are Treated Equal

God’s grace balances the world
all of us the same
all are treated equal
in the kingdom of God

Privilege, judgment
things which set us apart
the walls, the barriers
broken down by Christ

Only by His grace
the sacrifice of the cross
only by God’s mercy
are we redeemed from the lost

The keys of heaven
the gates of paradise
only in following
in the way of the Christ

Workers in the Fields

In the vineyards, the wilderness
light in the darkness
workers in the field
continuing the work of Christ

Whenever we come to believe
each called to do our part
serving our neighbors in the world
grace at the heart

Beginning to work, to go
to be Christ’s hands and feet
humbly serving out in the world
to spread God’s message of love

None of us deserving
the gift of God’s love
all of us fallen, falling short
of the commands to love

We gain a reward
not by our time, our work
only by the grace of the living God
bringing us into his love

beloved, loved

Sinned and fallen short

Our lives damned
the measure of our walk
all of us dross
failures in our faith

Yet each of us earn
wages of God’s grace
lifted from the depths
to see God face to face

Healed by the cross
though all have sinned,
fallen short, yet all restored
by the grace of the risen Christ

A Stranger within the Gate

Known within these walls
a member of the flock
yet a stranger within the gate
the courts of the law

Awkward in my spirit
pacing in the hall
wondering why I don’t fit in
that I don’t belong at all

A Calling to Write

Not oblique,
something unclear
not with words grandiose
a calling to write clear and terse

Poetry, beauty
in the straightforward
message from God
the words I hear in my heart

Called to share freely from him
to the ends of the earth
Comfort, hope, one truth revealed,
the love of Christ complete.

By his grace alone
we are made whole
our eternal lives restored.

No Cup Like This

The cup Christ drank
in the garden that night
no cup like this
in the history of man

God, alive
descended, a man
our hands upon his head
poisoning the lamb

When death graced his lips
on that fateful night
giving up his blood, his blood
in the cup

Sharing the meal
the bread and the wine
before the betrayal
the cup one of a kind

The Cup of Poison

Like Socrates and the hemlock
Christ in the garden
the cup of poison, death
waiting for his lips

Praying, in his agony
the struggle of his life
his humanness, divinity
this his final test

Sweat like blood
pouring down, to the ground
Christ crying out
that the cup could pass him by

Submitting his life, his will
to God’s mighty plan
the cup of our sin
bitterness, going down

The ransom paid
in the garden, again
Christ choosing, submitting
to the master’s will

Fruits of Rage

Fruits of the towers
of the killings
of wanting justice
meaning revenge,
retribution
a balancing of the scales
here on earth

Forgetting Christ
forgiveness
giving his life
upon the cross
a decade since
the burning towers
more polarized
at such a cost

Now the man
doubt remaining
going to
his destiny
strapped tight
to the gurney
though he claimed
not to be

The one they wanted
in the gallows
in the dock
of judgment’s call
claiming
his innocence
as the needles
came in three

Are we better
for the violence
the raging wars
the death last night
are we safer
for the martyrs
to the victims
of our nation’s rage

An Innocent Man

What will we say
when that day comes
when an innocent man
is sent to his death

When an innocent woman
is strapped to a gurney
what will we say
to the dead

What will we say
as a people
when the ultimate price
falls on the innocent

What will we say
as a nation
when revenge
pays the ultimate cost

“I pray that the investigation of the truth in this case will not end with his death. The death penalty will only be eliminated as a punishment in this country if we are forced as a people to stare at the consequence of killing an innocent person. Mr. Davis may not be that person; but that day will come, based on this being a human process. Too many people on death row have been found to be innocent; the probabilities are there. That awful day will come.”

Seeds of Hate

Seeds of hate, of rage
in the burning tower

Anguish, suffering
martyrs alike

10th anniversary of September 11, 2001
and the plot to attack DC and NY
reported September 9, 2011
------
As I woke this morning – v2

As I woke this morning, I remembered
I remembered that day, the exact moment
pain afresh, reliving, so clear, so vivid
when I saw the towers, innocence burning
our lives never the same, different
a shower of debris. The gasps, of each new person
coming into the room, silent, crying
seeing the images, over and over
Feeling the same ache as when
I watched the Challenger
explode in the sky.
So much lost
We watched, unsure
tears streaming down, helpless
Attacked on our soil, numb
disbelieving, even though seeing
I remember the air in the lounge,
all of us strangers, together
the small screen too big
showing too vividly the pain
the anguish, the towers hit, falling
plumes of smoke, of flame
darkness that morning, echoing still
friends, new friends, in the room
who may have loved ones in New York
in the Pentagon, at that moment
of different races, religions
from around the globe;
a call on a cell phone
All transfixed, unable to move

The death penalty will only be eliminated as a punishment in this country if we are forced as a people to stare at the consequence of killing an innocent person. Mr. Davis may not be that person; but that day will come, based on this being a human process. Too many people on death row have been found to be innocent; the probabilities are there. That awful day will come.”

Seeds of Hate

Seeds of hate, of rage
in the burning tower
separating the nations
the peoples of faith

Anguish, suffering
martyrs alike
claiming the creator
in the fists of our rage

As I woke this morning – v2

As I woke this morning, I remembered
I remembered that day, the exact moment
pain afresh, reliving, so clear, so vivid
when I saw the towers, innocence burning
our lives never the same, different
a shower of debris. The gasps, of each new person
coming into the room, silent, crying
seeing the images, over and over
Feeling the same ache as when
I watched the Challenger
explode in the sky.
So much lost
We watched, unsure
tears streaming down, helpless
Attacked on our soil, numb
disbelieving, even though seeing
I remember the air in the lounge,
all of us strangers, together
the small screen too big
showing too vividly the pain
the anguish, the towers hit, falling
plumes of smoke, of flame
darkness that morning, echoing still
friends, new friends, in the room
who may have loved ones in New York
in the Pentagon, at that moment
of different races, religions
from around the globe;
a call on a cell phone
All transfixed, unable to move

Fruit in old age

Following our call
in each season
more to do
as the Spirit calls

Fruit in old age
as surely as in springtime
God will lead us
if we submit to Him

=============
Never Too Old

Strength from the Lord
The calling of our master
new tasks to perform
gifts, fruits to share

Never too old
to begin a new world
God stirring inside of us
changing our lives,
conformed to his will
doing what we are called to do

God will provide
all that we need
trust in his loving hand
there by our side in all of our trials
in him rest when the work is done

Fruits of a Decade

A lifetime for some
death, despair
Seeds of Hate
we can find them there

Fruits of a decade
of terror, of hate
since the towers fell
since we went over there

Peoples of nations
peoples of faith
separated by beliefs
the things of this earth

Anguish, suffering
martyrs alike
claiming the creator
in fists of our rage

God gives to everyone

The same gift of God
given, paid for
left at the cross
Life, for his life
given for us
his body, his blood
his love for us

No wages, a gift
the moment we believe
only to care
to lift our neighbors up
to offer our love
the same grace his gives us
to fill their cup

The crown of life

God’s gift to us
paid at the cross
Christ’s suffering, dying
redeeming us from the lost

The crown of life
for everyone
only to believe
to follow our Lord

God’s mercy complete
forgiving our brokenness
only to turn
and follow the Christ

So little God requests
no matter when we believe
only to serve our neighbors
to carry Christ’s light to them

God rewards us richly
life for a life
healing us completely
on the altar of the cross

Wages beyond belief

We are paid by God
more than we can imagine
wages beyond belief
just by believing

Nothing we truly earn
walking in faith
spreading his message
the wonder of his grace

Sermon, "Shining Stars", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, September 11, 2011

Pastor Ruth Foss
September 11, 2011
Scripture passages from the Message Bible

Good Morning. . . well we have finally come to the end of our journey with Adam Hamilton’s “When Christians Get It Wrong.” Over the past weeks we heard all about what some young people think about Christians, why some are turning away from the church. Now we get to hear about when Christians get it right. But as I think about today being the 10th year remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy. . . I believe that it’s not just when Christian get it right but when humanity gets it right!

1 John 4:11-12, 16, 19-21 “love God = love others”

Christians get it right when they love others. When we, as Christians, proclaim Christ as our Savor. . . and that we love God. . . and are overjoyed with our fresh, renewed, restored relationship with God. . . then all those around us will know to whom we belong by our actions and words. As the hymn goes. . . ”they will know we are Christians by our love. . . by our love. . . they will know we are Christians by our love”. When we love God then we will love all of His creation. . . that’s all of His creation. . . not just who or what we chose but the whole package. . . ! How bright their light shines on that hill. . . shining with the light of acceptance and love for all to see

Matthew 5:13-16 Salt and Light of the World

When Christians get it right, we love those who others may see as undesirable. We love the differences that we all have and accept the differences as God’s way of adding texture, color, diversity to the world in which we lives. We share the flavor that God has put in each and every one of us. Others around us see the attributes of Christ in us. . . Christ Shines Through!! We are that city on the hill shining forth for the world to see. . . we are the seasoning that many in humanity long for. . . how bright their light shines on that hill. . . shining with the light of flavor and love for all to see

Matthew 5:43-48 Love Our Enemies

When Christians get it right we can change the world. It we love our enemies. . . treat them as God would have us treat them. . . maybe, just maybe, there could be peace, there could be some kind of harmony. Now I’m not saying that if we show love the love of God to those around us everything would be perfect. . . what I am saying is that it’s a good place to start. Someone has to begin to break down the walls. We as Christians are called to not live as the world would have us live but as God would have us live. . . to live a life of radical hospitality. . . that same hospitality, the same love that kept Jesus nailed to the cross. . . how bright their light shines on that hill. . . shining with the light of peace and justice for all to see

Matthew 22:34-40 Two Great Commandments

Christians get it right when they live by these two commandments. These are pivotal to our witness ad faith. Christians are that shining light when they decide that the way of the world is not the path they chose to take, when they decide that their life will not be one of dual standards. Christians get it right when they love others instead of their own “ego” so to speak. When they decide to stand out in the crowd for all of the “right reasons”. . . how bright their light shines on that hill. . . shining with that light of love for all to see.

Romans 12:9-21 Paul’s Take on Love

When Christians get it right. . . they want to proclaim and share the gift that God has given them. They love not on the surface but it is rooted in their very being. They don’t go along with the world’s view of right and wrong and they chose not to compromise their beliefs. They pray even when it seems useless because they know the power of prayer and that God hears the prayers of all creation. They choose a life of Radical Hospitality but not in the way the world sees hospitality but in response to the radical hospitality given them from God through Jesus Christ. When Christians get it right they are living with the glasses of God. . . seeing as God sees.
How bright their light shines on that hill. . . shining with the light of God that illuminates the darkest dark with the light of the noon day sun. . . The Light of the Son for all to see. . .

When Christians. . . when humanity gets it right here will be no more 9/11’s. I am reminded of what happened on 9/12 that year of the destruction. . . the year of the terrorist attack. On 9/12. . . this nation came together as one. People forgot about their differences for a while and banned together. If we did it once. . . we can do it again. We as Christians. . . as a nation need to live our lives in 9/12. Then maybe. . . just maybe there can be a change. . . there can be peace. . . here can be healing. And not only that. . . if we as a world. . . as all humanity together would adopted that same 9/12 attitude. . . can you imagine what our world would be like? Just imagine. . .

AMEN

Everyone has sacred worth

Not of the earth
the way of the world
treasure that rusts
that which is ephemeral
returning to dust

Everything good

Soft falling rain

A day of drizzle
of quiet outside
clouds are so low,
I can almost feel God's arms
wrapped in his love
sensing his presence
feeling God with me
walk toward heaven

A Message of God’s Love

Across the skies
a message of God’s love
The colors, a changing tableau
love echoing, murmuring
a visual chorus
charged across the skies
The sun, the moon, the sky
dancing in their positions
with the stars above
shimmering God’s glory
in our eyes below

We deserve so much less

If we are honest
if we look at ourselves
acknowledging our sins
our estrangement from God

We deserve so much less
in the kingdom of God
we deserve death
from the glut of our sin

God’s grace alone
his mercy, his love
redeeming us, restored
a gift from the Lord

Christ’s Nature

What we know,
what we see
the example of Christ
his living nature
forgiving our neighbors,
ourselves, our sins
yet thinking we are better
worthy somehow
forgetting we too are unworthy
deserving of death
yet Christ forgave us
even on the cross

To be the body

To be the body
disciples, messengers
the living body of Christ
to sow our seeds
to gather the others
to redeem them from the lost
to follow the Christ
in the way of the cross
to be his hands and feet
his body, his blood
Carrying his light
into the world
to be salt, clay

Sermon, "What about my needs?!", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, September 18, 2011

“What about my needs?!”

Sunday September 18, 2011
Jonah 3:10-4:11 (NRSV Bible)
Matthew 20:1-16 (Gods Word Bible)

Have you ever watch children when it’s snack time? I mean it is comical to watch…especially when one seems to have the upper hand on the “good snacks.” For instance…at our house, don’t let anyone get more than anyone else. It as if they keep a mental count on who gets what and how much. And don’t let someone get more than the other. Oh boy…that’s when the cry of “FOUL” is heard throughout the house. I hear things like “that’s not fair…how come they get more than me…they had more of that than I did and now they are getting the last of it. What about my needs? What about me?” Shyanne is diabetic so she has more snacks during the day than let’s say Shanequa. And what do I get to hear…I want a free snack too…it’s not fair that she gets a snack and I don’t.”…let alone the fact that she needs them to control her blood sugar, the fact is she is getting the extra snacks…

Why is there so much self-entitlement in the world? Why can’t we as humanity be thankful for what we have been given instead of looking to what more we “should” get? Why can’t we be happy for those who receive something instead of begrudging them? Even in t the story of Jonah this morning he gets all upset because God forgave Nineveh instead of destroying the city as Jonah thought should happen. To him…God was being unfair…I guess he had forgotten how merciful God was and how God wants people to do the right thing…always ready to forgive…Even though he had just spent some time in the belly of a big fish. He also was upset because he had that wonderful tree to keep him cool and now it was gone. It wasn’t even his but he thought that he should have it anyway.

Even the disciples, who followed Jesus and knew His nature, were having issues about this. They thought they had a leg up on the rest of the world. They were Jesus’ followers…an elite group. But Jesus told them a story…a parable…that stopped them in their tracks. Jesus let them know that “all have sinned and fallen short”, even them, and that God gives everyone, no matter when they come to the saving grace, the crown of life, the honor of being a beloved, adopted child of God with all the honors of the royal Kingdom. The parable is found in Matthew chapter 20 verses 1-16 and now; listen to this story and see if you hear anything familiar in it: (I am reading from the Gods Word Bible this morning…)

These workers aren’t mad because of what they are paid, they are mad because others were paid the same and that wasn’t fair. They had worked less than them.

Beloved, the kingdom of heaven, God’s kingdom, has a very different view of fairness. God alone decides what is fair and not society. It’s God’s mercy and love vs. society’s selfishness and ego. We live in a world where there are many times when equal pay is not given for the same work. Society has its own set of rules but in God’s society everyone is of equal value and is paid the same.

In society, we decide what we think is fair. Society brings its own agenda to the table. Society’s agenda brings about segregation and “classes” of people, who is worth more. In God’s society and on His agenda is that everything and everyone has sacred worth. We deserve so much less in God’s world but it His mercy and grace that gives us more than we can ever imagine or de serve.

We can tend to get a little legalistic at times about our serving God. We receive others receive undo recognition...in our eyes…and we get the feeling of being slighted…What about me…what about my needs. God rewards faithfulness, no matter how long it is done…no matter how little we see it is deserved…no matter how large or small the faithfulness is.

God’s grace shatters the bonds of privilege and all are treated equal. We have no real rights before God. Remember…ALL have fallen short of the glory of God. We may even envy God’s generosity to others and believe we deserve more for what we have done. But as we come to understand God’s economics of His grace, our faith is strengthened. We are able to be used far more effectively for His kingdom because we are not out for our own “accolades” but for God to get the glory…the accolade. We need to do all things to the glory of God not our own glory.

Beloved…we need to search within our hearts. Are we acting as Jonah did or the workers in the vineyard screaming “FOUL” when we don’t get what we think we deserve or when other get more than what we think they deserve? Or are we working in the vineyard just for the sheer joy of bringing about the kingdom? Search deep within your heart and see if there is some way within you that is preventing you to be used to your fullest for the kingdom of God…

AMEN.
