They did not believe

They would not talk with me,
I couldn’t be hired,
They did not believe I could
Cross the Rubicon,
To see them with white hats.

But they did not ask me,
Who I was, truly,
They did not look at my resume,
To see that I was a company man,
Open to their argument…

They did not believe

I was never interviewed by any law firm
that represents school districts
when I was doing my job search,
because I had worked as a clerk
with Stein, Volinsky, and Callaghan,
while in law school…
I had been a school board member and chair
before law school…

the white of the screen

the white of the screen
the images flowing
captured on their eyes’ lenses
like a mirror reflecting;
The words of the test
the screen at an angle.

seen at an angle
the flickering images
a jaw clenched/released
in time with the reading;
No knowing how well
they will do.

marbles of amber – v3

Each memory,
each experience
not a thread, a fiber,
pulled from the ether,
like in Harry Potter;
More like marbles,
like insects dipped in amber
held within my fist.
Each one holding
a discrete memory
some moment of my life.

All of them numbered;
I know them all, familiar,
I can recite them by heart.
I would know instantly
if any of them were missing;
there would be a vacuum
where they had been.
I hold them all in my memory.
Some that are painful
are my favorites;
Please don’t ask me
to let these friends go.

stories looping

stories looping, the tape playing
scripts that have been memorized
repeated, repeated over time
the same role players, the same villains
familiar in the retelling, word for word
touching the crystals, gaining power
feeding the next generation
fighting their reviews

stories looping, the same words repeating
comfort in that which is known
the same stories familiar
able to speak with passion
the words retrieved from memory
touching the crystals, gaining strength
to share the power, the words in memory,
the images revealed within each story.

with a mind like an elephant – v2

Remembering everything
with a photographic memory
remembering every word, every action;
But unable to release
even one word, one moment,
every time they wanted to scream,
“No!,” to their aggressors
for every slight, each injustice.

Able to name those who ridiculed them,
who tormented them,
those who pushed their buttons
on the bus, in the schoolyard;
With a mind like an elephant
able to repeat, verbatim,
like a tape loop, repeating,
every conversation, each injustice.

A burden remaining on them
stumbling blocks, stones,
in their way, stopping,
hindering progress;
Unable to focus,
to live in the present, carrying
chains of each memory, their past
yes, each word, each injustice.
