marbles of amber – v2

Each memory, each experience
not a thread, pulled from the ether,
like in Harry Potter
more like marbles,
like insects preserved in amber
held within my fist.
Each one holding
a discrete memory
some moment of my life.
All of them numbers;
I know them all
I can recite them by heart.
I would know instantly
if any of them were missing,
there would be a vacuum
where they had been;
I hold them all in my memory.
Some that are painful
are my favorites;
Please don’t ask me
to let these friends go.

with a mind like an elephant
hearing the stories of many students,
and knowing my own,
when we cannot let go of our memories,
things of the past
