Something Special about the Guest – v2

We pause to reflect
to search for deeper meaning
not merely the words
but the truth within the reading

Something worth remembering
in the action of the stranger
something special about the guest
seeking Christ where he was

Boldly going, entering in
an uninvited guest
seeking healing, wholeness
care from our Lord

In our lives, in our ministry
continuing Christ’s labors
our gifts being given
used for God’s kingdom

Seeing the uniqueness
the needs of each stranger
being open as he was
wherever we find them

sharing the love of God
to all whom we meet
being the witnesses in our time
being Christ’s hands and feet

seeds in the apple – v2

the ripple of eternity
places in human hearts
seeds in the apple
the fruit of the vine
multiplied, orchards
a harvest of souls
each seed a start
a wonder to behold
another pathway of love
unknown, in the future
a harvest of souls
a harvest for God’s kingdom

Back to Zion – v2

From captivity from distant lands
the diaspora, the chosen people,
when God brought us back to Zion
we sang for joy together
at God’s mercy, his provision
when God gathered the captives
from exile, back to the center
when we came back to Zion
how the streets were filled with song
at God’s mercy, his provision

Abide – v2

A simple command
to abide in Christ
dead outside
alive in the vine

Alive in Christ
fed by his waters
connected to God
alive for His glory

bearing fruit
fruit of the Spirit
loving as Christ loves
sowing seeds of God’s kingdom

to reap a harvest
a bounty, a purpose
a welling up of joy
through these gifts of the Spirit

Hating their brothers – v2

For generation upon generation
far longer than the modern age
locked in unholy struggle
two brothers fighting
two great peoples
bound together
by a legacy of hate

A legacy of anger
four thousands of years
endless battles, continuing division
over that sliver of earth
Hating their brothers
the large family circle
the children of Ishmael
and the descendants of Isaac

In the moment of their greeting – v2

Their actions, without words
joy within each heart
affirming the divine
God’s plan unfolding
the presence of the Christ-child
in Mary’s womb, growing,
John overjoyed, overcome
leaping within her, his mother
in the moment of their greeting
God’s promise complete
the one who would herald
and the One who was to come

falling like sprinkled sugar

Memory is a fiction - v2

What we believe we know
our history, the moments
the events of our lives
yet memory is a fiction
a creation of the now
We recast our memories
our history to our purpose
how we feel now, this moment
reshaping the fabric of our past

Take the time to prepare the soil – v4

If we are approach our journey differently,
if we stand in the garden with God
seeing the world more as He does
a living work ever in progress

If we see ourselves as partners
as custodians of the world
but not just of the vineyard
of the soil, the earth, as well

What if we saw the garden
as the soul of every person
the soil the heart of each human
all of the people on earth

We are to water with the word
witnesses to the life of Christ Jesus
speaking the truth in the scripture
and the revelation of God’s love

We must take time to prepare
to nurture the living, damaged soil
knowing that each heart is a vineyard
and that our hope is from above

God’s message is the seed for the soil
revealed in the grace of our Savior, the Christ
our only hope of eternity
is in God’s message of love

We must take time to prepare
to tend these many fragile gardens
that we may one day present a harvest for God
when we share in this work of love

taking off eternity

God sacrificed
before the world began
letting us turn from him
letting us abuse the land

God offered us
many paths to him
but we turned away
choosing not to live

Christ came to save
to lift us from the dust
taking off eternity
and coming to live with us

The strangest king that ever was
washing the disciples feet
silent before the Pharisees
and climbing the cross for me

What kind of king is this
that would do all that
the one who came and died
that we would rise with him

putting on human flesh

The sacrifice of Christmas
God descending as a man
taking off eternity
and putting on mortal flesh

More than the sacrifice
the choosing of the cross
this was what really cost
letting go of his power

Christ piercing the curtain
his place in heaven above
choosing the manger, the cross
the journey with us here below

The sacrifice of Christmas

We think of the cross
of Christ dying for us
the ultimate sacrifice
in our human minds

But what of the day years before
the day we wait for
the babe in the manger
the child of Bethlehem

Imagine for a moment
the state of grace
God descending as a human
giving up his power

The sacrifice of Christmas
maybe a harder step
taking off eternity
and putting on mortal flesh

in a donkey stall

we think of the stable
of the humble birth
but even less than this
born in a donkey stall
placed in the hay
the bread of life
where the donkeys were fed
life for all of us
starting like this
not a king of riches
but a life for our lives

on hearing this - v2

Baptized, drenched
gathered
into the Spirit
on hearing Paul’s words
his healing touch
his hands upon them

God come down
present within
into their hearts
disciples redeemed
brought into the flock
to walk with God

A Heavy Presence

Something dark remaining
not set free, released
a heavy presence in the air
a weight of some sorrow
Something hanging in the air
no peace for the residents
calm not finding them
asleep in the attic

Feeling the peace of that moment – v2

Sensing their spirits
in this hallowed space
hallowed ground I walked on
feeling their warm embrace

Stillness of the dusk
bright sun before its dying
sharing this moment with them
the saints who guard this space
