Something about standing there
in their presence, held there
a congregation gathered
watching as we walked
into the sanctuary, outdoors
The parishioners of old
saints who have gone before
as if they were seated on the pews
joining us in quiet reflection
Asking the girls to stay behind me
so that I could slowly enter in
walking the steps of these faithful
those who had formed this place
Reverently sharing
with them, these saints
this space for praising God
sensing the singing of the choir
on this hallowed, sacred ground
