Touching Our Past

The things we have
those that have meaning
part of our history
the family from which we come
treasures handed down
part of who we are
those who led, who lived
the faces we resemble
touching our past
in their things
our memories washing down
richly blessing us
all that we are
connected with them
our family
down through the ages
not in the stuff per se
but in touching our past

Our First Audience

More than any other
down in the basement
out thespian drive
the words, motion
our costuming
the curtain
over the mouth
of the crawlspace
Your applause
our first audience ever
Mom there with us
cheering us on.

The Curse of Our Shame

You carried it all
the weight of the world
the stink, the stain
the curse of our shame
to the cross,
to death, to the grave

For Your love
Your grace
You gave Your all
that we may live

Through Our Struggles

All of us on a journey
coming into our faith
the words becoming real
written deeper on our hearts

Slowly, through the years
through our joys and our sorrows
cleaving to the Lord
through our heartache and struggles

Finding peace,
in the strength of our savior
turning to him in our times of trial
in finding him our reward

Sensing Your Presence

Liberated, at peace
even in the storms
gathering myself up
to cleave to you oh Lord

Sensing your presence

grounding me in the love of God
as I go about my day

Right beside me Lord
you are so good to me
reminding me of your loving grace
bringing me close to thee

Hope in Our Troubles

A gift though we may not know it
realized in the anxious moments
our problems, our troubles
the seeds of our hope in tomorrow

God working through us
through the days of our lives
each of us refined
in the fire of our struggles

All of us may praise
God for our troubles
in them we find the strength
the resolve in him
that makes our hope come alive

In the fire of problems

Gaining from our struggles
with God beside us
dwelling within us still
when we turn to him

In the fire of problems
in the day to day trials
refined in the fire
to be his hands and feet

Burning away the dross
that which is not needed
making us more holy
as we go forth in his service

Within Us Moving

Our prayer in this witness
that we would feel your presence
your spirit moving with us
like John within Elizabeth
at the presence of Jesus
as real to us as our loved ones before us

the faithful gathered together
may you be as real to us
to kindle our doubting spirits
to go out into our world
to boldly preach your word
to go and do your work

A Single Strand of Gossamer

Thoughts of the day
running through my mind
moving to get her to the school
to be on time

A single strand of gossamer
breaking against my cheek
wondering what the spider must have thought
of catching prey like me

The single strand invisible
as I rushed along
yet so memorable the way it snacked
causing me to pause

To marvel at creation
all there is to see
all that we miss
rushing in our busyness

---------------
Cling-wrap webs

Over the dark black woodchips
the wet spider webs
three of them set apart
spaces between the posts of the fence
beside the sidewalk
warming from the downpours last night
July morning warming
cooled by the moving air

Like cling-wrap
more than gauze
yet surely saturated
as if the thin film of plastic
could hold endless water

Clear, yet defined
reflecting the light back
up to me, to catch my attention
drawing me to look
even as I am walking by
to pause enough
to memorize the form
the image of this scene
that I could take it with me
a wonder for my day

---------------
String of Pearls

Foggy morning
On the Vineyard
In Aquinnah
Wet chair, hot coffee
Sip in the heat
Shake the daze

Camera and film
Sandals snap as I walk
In the early morning
Before the island awakes

Misty morning
Full of promise
For a skilled watcher
Of moment and place

Wet green
Lush
Looking for a web
Ready to pose

A string of pearls
Hovered before a backdrop
Bowed by the wait
Of the night

A long cord
Tacky to hold the drops
As drops
My reflection in each as I approached
To steal the scene
With closeup lens

Centered and balanced
Enlarged and framed
Hovering now
On my wall
To conjure the moment
On the path
Years ago

For the Crispness of the Season

The air changing from the cool of the morning
to the warming of midday
for the crispness of the season
Lord do we sing your praise

So much to be thankful for
in the changing of the days
the bounty of your harvest
abundance in your grace

For the Fall, we sing your glory
oh let your kingdom come
this is a mere foretaste
for when our work is done

The beauty of the colors
your creation speaking with one voice
ever singing your goodness
to the whole of this good earth

For the Fall

For the glory of the day
for the bright sun shining
the azure sky calling,
where it bleeds to white

The reds and yellows coming
the greens giving way
the bright colors rising
as they die in your praise

Thanks to God for the morning
for the warming day
reaching for midday
in the glory of your way

Our marks in the sand

Our steps on the earth
what will we leave behind
our marks in the sand
the fleeting sands of time

Our choice to live
by the world or for God
to treasure our possessions
or to be his feet and hands

To love our neighbor
or the things that rust
to live for his glory
or to stumble in the dust

Our Footprints on the Earth

We, humankind
footprints on the earth
global consequences to our choices
whether divinely made
of cosmic dust
coalesced into our shape
footprints, in the ground,
the water, the air
rippling down through time
ending we know not where

By Love’s Command

We are to live
not be the ways of the world
not be some rigid orthodoxy
but by love’s command

Following our savior
living our God’s command
giving our lives to him
to all to lend a hand

We are the children of the king
if we choose to submit to him
to give our lives in his service
to spread the good news to man

Not the Religion

not the religion, not the name we claim
proof of our humanity, our belief in love
in the way we life, in what we do
how we walk on this earth
humble, good to our neighbors
reaching out to those in need
no label, no denomination
nothing to set us apart
part of our family
the whole human race
offered grace by the creator
in relationship
we all find our place
