A Sermon on Ruth
If I could write a sermon on Ruth
What words would I use, what would I say?
to tell the world about Ruth
How would I convey the person she is?
to share what I know, what I have learned
Where would I turn, where would I look?
to find the words, the right words
Who would I ask, to help me in the telling?
the inmates, the pastors, the sisters in faith
Which of these would lead me to a fuller story?
explore the nuances, the linking of her life to her namesakes
Why would I spend the time to find the words to share?
Because there is a sermon to share about Ruth,
A story of loyalty, of fealty, of love, of servanthood
worthy to be told, to be heard, to understand.
Who she is, why she does the things she does,
where she feels called to be, what she hopes to achieve,
and which sandals she is willing to wear.
And the answer to when is why not now.

God’s Will
At the end of our prayer
before our parting
after the words, the request for wisdom
that my mouth would
find your words, oh Lord
Closing with the prayer
that Your will would be done
that the outcome, the decision
always, would be Your will,
that your justice would be done
at the end of the day, the end of the process
that my gifts, given by You,
would serve Your will, Your purposes
this day in this place

Stewards of the Garden
We are called to maintain,
to protect, to tend
the garden, to weed, to water,
to prune, to care, to plant,
to harvest, to till, to feed
to respect the garden,
to leave the garden
for others to enjoy
to protect, to tend
the garden, to weed, to water,
to prune, to care, to plant,
to harvest, to till, to feed
to respect the garden,
to leave the garden
for others to enjoy
