outside the subway – v4

each time, a row of them,
those asking for money
cups in outstretched hands
reaching for us, calling

wanting to give, to be faithful
but a thought, a wondering if
the cash I try to give them
will buy drugs instead

a challenge for us, disciples
trying to be like Jesus
wondering what He would do
what His call is to us

do we give to all of them
what do we give to those asking
do we give until we have nothing
until we are like them

something about these questions
sounding vaguely like Judas
when he questioned the act of Mary
pouring out the precious nard

or like the widow’s offering
giving her last two coins
or of the widow using her oil, her flour
feeding the prophet Elijah

trusting in God to provide
that the oil, the flour would
never go empty
that God will yet provide

the cup has been filled – v3

the cup has been filled
the bread has been made ready
prepared for the people
the hungry people of God
waiting on the altar
for the service to begin

World Communion Sunday
will tomorrow be upon us
a time to be the body
the living body of Christ
sharing the one meal
all around the world

A Balm to the Schisms – v3

may I be water
to quench the fire
not gasoline to fuel
the flames ignited
let me be open
to different opinions
let me be open to God’s love

may I be oil on the water
a balm to the schism, the
exposed wounds revealed
may my words be stitches
to bind us together
my life a witness
to God’s redeeming love.

Golden Years – v2

pearls of wisdom, gifts of light
shining in the colors
shining so brightly
golden days, golden years
after feeding, drinking in the Word
shining our light for God
our own unique colors
too long hidden
out in the world

wanting to share, to offer
God’s wisdom, our gift
our hope in salvation
in our Savior, in Jesus,
in the precious blood of Christ
healing us completely
saving us with a kiss
a gift of salvation
nothing we have earned

the wisdom of the elders

something so fitting
in the connecting to scripture
to the commandments of God
for the chosen people
the wisdom of the elders
frost on the pumpkins
the time of feeding completed
or soon to be ending
a change of the season
longing to be giving
to give back, to share,
to offer their life experience
sharing their true colors
hidden in the green
the wisdom of the elders
falling from the trees
