String of Pearls

Foggy morning
On the Vineyard
In Aquinnah
Wet chair, hot coffee
Sip in the heat
Shake the daze

Camera and film
Sandals snap as I walk
In the early morning
Before the island awakes

Misty morning
Full of promise
For a skilled watcher
Of moment and place

Wet green
Lush
Looking for a web
Ready to pose

A string of pearls
Hovered before a backdrop
Bowed by the wait
Of the night

A long cord
Tacky to hold the drops
As drops
My reflection in each as I approached
To steal the scene
With closeup lens

Centered and balanced
Enlarged and framed
Hovering now
On my wall
To conjure the moment
On the path
Years ago

Out of place

Color mismatch
Movement out of place

A short, broke yew,
late in the summer
Dark green,
Leather skin
Shiny
Broken branches
Dull brown

Ripe red fruit
Drinking in the sun
Bent to crush one
between fingers and thumb
As a child
Goosh

A praying mantis
dayglow green
Hiding poorly
in the branches
Rears its body
to my intrusion

Study each other
What threat am I
To those eyes,
Leave him be
Scared enough
No camera anyway

Alien head
Tokyo dream
Lobster mandibles
kangeroo arms
Seemingly
ready to punch

Unexpected Conversation

New patrolman and law student
Brothers
Between classes
Debating, over lunch
Gray edges of law
Exigent circumstances

Criminal procedure
Search and arrest
Inventory, by the book
Creating reasonable suspicion
To stop, search, discover
A crime

Learning together
From the other
Statute and precedent –
Practice Series
Awaits

Charlie

King of the floor
At 4 years old
The host of new arrivals
The smile through the pain.
Personal barbers
Wheelchair races
Painful therapy
Years of struggle
Strength beyond years
Comforting the adults
