The scars of the nails – 2 – v2

When we look at our hands
do we see the scars of the nails
the sacrifice of Christ
Do we feel the tissue
what He did for us

Are we truly his hands and feet
our bodies mere gloves
filled with Christ
do others see love
when they look upon us

Do Others See Love

Do others see love
when they look upon us
do they see our Savior
in the way that we live

Do they sense God’s guiding
in the walk of our days
do they see our faith

Grace upon Grace - 2

God’s love never ending
like a flowing river
washing over us
standing
in the living water
Grace upon grace
hope following hope
joy heaped on joy
in His loving presence
We should be singing
praises enduring
living yoked with our Savior
all of our days

no gold, no spices

Offering our hands
the work to be done
loving our neighbors

Hands that Gathered Grain

Watching the fishermen
the ones who followed
who sought the Messiah
who followed the Christ
Leaving John, their nets,
working for the kingdom
continuing yet.

Hands that gathered grain
the seeds that were sowing
a harvest for the kingdom
love to be shared
holy in their mission
to save the whole world
Heeding his calling
to the ends of the earth

Feeling his touch
the roughness of his hands
the scars from the nails
where he was crucified
the touch of his love

The hands of the fishermen

Leaving their nets
the fish on the shore
their families, their homes
their lives to that day

Going with Jesus
following our shepherd
sheep of the one flock
calling to us

The hands of the fishermen
leading us to Jesus
guiding us in this walk
following like them

Sowing seeds
that we would be reaped
grain for the harvest
for the Lord to joyfully keep

Joseph’s Hands

Hands of the carpenter
the hands of Joseph
the father of Jesus
raising our Savior
as his own son

Teaching him a trade
faithful to God’s calling
raising our Savior
as his own son

Giving him over
to the God’s will
giving up our Savior
handing him over
God’s own Son
dying for us

Reap from the Spirit

A prayer for the morning
to always and ever
to reap from the Spirit
sowing seeds of love

All in the sowing
that our hearts would be open
open to your call
ever, always, oh Lord

Listening for your message
a discernment for our path
guiding me ever
in your ways oh Lord

It is all in the sowing

The path at the end
the gathering coming
how the gleaning will be
all in the sowing

Whether to the flesh
the way of the world
or to the Spirit
the calling within

Speaking to me
guiding me when I am willing
God calling to me
to lead me in the way

It is all in the sowing
the seeds we offer
sowing to destruction
or to eternal life

The Carpenter’s Hands

We think of the fishermen
the first disciples
their hands doing
the work of the church

Each of them chosen
called by the Shepherd
to follow Him completely
in love and submission

The humble King guiding
us in this life
showing us an example
of servanthood and sacrifice

To continue His work
to be the carpenter’s hands
using all we have
to lift up our fellow man

Gentle and Loving – v3

Listen all you children
Listen to the way of Christ
the words of His calling
God wooing us
seeking us ever
to see paradise

Gentle and loving
the voice of our Master
speaking to us
walking beside us
to guide and comfort
in the path of life

Calming our disquiet
in the words of our Savior
a balm to our fears
grace revealing
in Love descending
walking here with us

God’s soothing presence
Offering love to man
never to leave us
promising to be with us
all the days of our lives
until He calls us home
at the end of the age

They only needed a flag

Standing on the mountaintop
above the adoring masses
they only needed a flag
to seal this treasured moment
Standing on the mountaintop
up high on the snow bank
so much as Hillary and Norgay must have been
claiming this piece of ground
standing atop Everest

The Three of Them Victorious

Like those who climbed Everest
happy, on the mountain
standing on the snow bank
looking at the others

The three of them victorious
happy fifth graders
falling down to greet the bus
laughing at their antics

“I fell on my rump roast”,
one shouted, and repeated
Laughing easily,
in snow pants for this reason

Anadama Dough

Scraping the new snow
the crystals sparkling
after dropping off the girls
preparing for tomorrow
The flakes like confectioner’s sugar
maybe sifted flour
breaking off the slush from the tires
pushing it to the shoulder
Falling heavy
like too-wet anadama dough
dark and rich with molasses
rolling in the snow
The snow-flour sticking
as if on the cutting board
forming little balls
as if ready for the oven

Our Feet are Higher than the Bus

Standing on the playground
looking up at Shyanne
a fellow fifth-grader
staring down on me
Laughing in their revelation
just how tall they were
standing on the snowbank
looking down on the world

“Our feet are higher than the bus!”,
they pealed with such joy
sliding down to greet the day
heading off to school

Walking on this Journey

Walking on this journey
because I know my feet
stumbling, leading me
away from the path of life
wanting to be near God
yet walking far from Him
guiding me ever wayward
when I want to be like Him
Walking on this journey
knowing it is a struggle
wanting to submit to Him
but my weakness is within
Standing on this path
His hand to guide me
walking with my Savior
striving ever
to heed the shepherd’s call

Standing on this Path

On this journey ever
ever seeking the Lord
Hoping to be near Him
heaven as my reward

Yet I know I am not worthy
only by standing on this path
a humble response to his goodness
his grace poured out for us

Trying each day
to witness to His kindness
leading me toward my Savior
walking beside me
guiding my trembling feet

Becoming Sheep

Maybe not something easy
for people of the earth
to give up our free will
to turn to the Lord

Becoming sheep slowly
answering the Shepherd’s call
following our Savior’s example
giving our neighbor our all

Guiding Other Sheep

Setting our own examples
yoked with our Shepherd
guiding other sheep
in the way of servanthood

Giving to others
sacrificial offerings
reaching to others
that they would be sheep

Follow His Example

Live as if we are sheep
follow the lead of our master
the way of our shepherd
in servanthood, sacrifice
offering our neighbors
even the strangers
hope for the lost
healing our brokenness

Follow the example of Christ
our loving Savior
laying down His life for us
giving to the Father
All of His freedom
his free will as a man
offering up his whole self
that we may be restored

Being the Image of Christ

An impression of the infinite
a taste of the divine
when we care for our neighbor
offering love to all
when we reach out in comfort
to balm their wounds and mind
Being an image of Christ
manifestations of His grace
guided by the Spirit’s leading
in the path of our lives

The Grace of Your Answers

The grace of Your answers
wooing me with Your love
wanting me near You
calling me from above

All of our worries offered
turning to You Lord
seeking You ever
that I may be restored

My cares lifted
my heart healed by Your hand
my hope come alive
in Your answers to my prayers

All I need is to call You
to know that you are here
not just in the heavens
but beside me every day

My life in Your hands
my hope in Your love
wooing me when I stray
holding me in Your grace
every single day

to be authentic in my witness

Only what I know
how Christ has touched my life
speaking from the heart
the musings of my soul

To be authentic in my witness
speaking of God’s love
reaching down from heaven
lifting this sinner up

To be a light to the nations
needing to stoke the fire
cleaving to His scripture
God’s holy words of love

A message for me
speaking to my heart
giving me oil for my lamp
God provides the spark

Needing to choose them wisely
to find the right words
in this time of division
to heal the wounds

Needing to stop
to turn to scripture
the message of Jesus
there to reveal

Love for our neighbors
even our enemies
guiding our speech
all that we do

Offering hope

To reach within

To reach our neighbor
the stranger, in the world
to be a light to the nations
shining in the wilderness
we need to reach within
to drink of the living waters
guided by the Holy Spirit
given words to share
to reach down to the suffering
that they would be lifted up
finding comfort in the message
the endless grace of God

Sermon - "A Light to the Nations", by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, Suncook, NH, January 16, 2011

Pastor Ruth Foss
January 16, 2011
Second Sunday after Epiphany
John 1:29-42 Common English Bible
Isaiah 49:1-7 Gods Word Bible

A Light to the Nations

Words. . . have you ever noticed how words have different meanings to people? For instance the word “bad”. . . now I was brought up with the word bad being something negative but now the word “bad” means good. “That’s a bad outfit your wearing. . . that movie was bad. . . ”

Some words that we use we don’t even realize the ramifications that they cause. Words are a double edged sword! We use words that can be exclusive, words that can marginalize and oppress, words that can heal and words that can cause wounds. They build up or breakdown. They edify or they destroy. We never know who is listening to our words and how it may be affecting them. Words are dangerous if we use them before we think. . .

Let us pray:

Loving Compassionate God, giver of all Knowledge, we pray for your Spirit to be here amongst us today. Lord, speak to us in words that we will understand so that we will be doers of your Word and not just hearers. Lord, you have told us that where two or more are gathered, there you will also be. Come Holy Spirit; fill us with your fire. Speak Lord, your holy ones are listening. . .

I have been hearing and reading a lot about the shooting in Arizona this past week. This act of violence has left a congress woman wounded and many others, killed a judge and a 9 year old child, just to name a few of the ramifications from this violent act. And I ask myself. . . how can this happen, what is the sense of it all? Some have claimed it is because of the language that is used by elected officials. . . language that is used during political campaigns. It has been said that these word have made those who are in the margins of society to act on their anger and violent feelings. Politicians using words like “taking out” their opponents and the like have made others take action on these words.

In the New Testament. . . we see Jesus using words. These words are words of love and of hope. Jesus didn’t need to use a lot of words at times, but His words were just as powerful when He used few as when He used many. We see in the reading from John this morning, Jesus only used three words, “come and see,” and they changed lives forever. As a matter of fact, they caused one of the first disciples to go and get someone else to “come and see.”. . . words of love. . . words of hope. Jesus’ invitation was gentle and loving in contrast to the words we hear in the news today. His words were ones of an invitation to fellowship.

So how are we to find the right words? What are we, as Christians called to do in the wake of the world in which we live? The words of Isaiah 49:1-7 speaks to use about how we are to act in a world of violence and hatred, a world of prejudice and marginalization. Listen to the message of Isaiah to the chosen of God. . . (read Isaiah 49:1-7 from Gods Word Translation)

I know in my life I have felt like the servant in Isaiah’s message. I have been weary and feel like it is all in vain. But that doesn’t that I am not called to be the light to the nations. God didn’t say it would be easy, God says to just do it. . . He will be with me. . . He will give me strength. . . He will lead if I just will follow. . . Gods says “I WILL make you a light to the nations.”

It is difficult to find the right words at times. We hear all this bad rhetoric from not only people in power but on the radio, the TV, and the internet. But through it all, we have a guide. We have God’s word. We need to examine the bible, we need to contemplate what the words are saying, we need to find a new and fresh meaning for the time in which we live and then choose the right words to share them with those in the world around us. God has given us a calling to touch the world with the words we use, to reach down and touch people’s deepest needs.

Words. . . they are more powerful than I think most of us realize. I received an e-mail from “Pew to Pulpit” this week and something that was written really made me stop and think. I am not sure who wrote this but it really made me think about the call to be a light to the nations. It made me think about the “radical” hospitality that we have talked about. It reads:

"Come and see." It's an open house. People are invited to informally stop in and see a new home, remember an anniversary, and celebrate a minor holiday. "Come and see." Don't make a big fuss. Don't dress up. Don't bring presents. Just come and be with us! "Come and see." It's an invitation into relationship. Yes, there is almost always a good "excuse" for the invitation. At its core, however, is a warm welcome, an openness, a desire for relationship. "Come and see." Andrew's inviting words summoned his brother Peter into relationship with the Christ. It was a simple invitation with no strings attached. "Come and see." This same invitation brings many to Christ today.

We are to be a light to the nations. We can do this by not only our actions but also by our choice of words. We can invite others to “come and see”. We can invite others into a relationship with us as individuals and as a community. . . after all. . . we all need to feel we belong. There are many types of lights, Many gifts one Spirit, many types of lights. . . but the one thing that they all do is illuminate the dark.

My question to you is this. . . how will you answer the call? How will you use words of love, of acceptance, of hope? How will you practice radical hospitality to those in our communities and beyond? Will you be that light to the nations that you have been called to be through our Lord Jesus Christ? What will you do?

AMEN?!

Note: Several members of the congregation responded - Amen.

Why Not Today

In the Courts of heaven
standing in the gate on earth
Why not today
to laud our Savior’s birth

Sharing the joy of Jesus
Christ coming to earth
worshipping ever
the presence of God

Not waiting for the future
eternity in heaven
sharing richly
the good news of our Brother
come to save the earth

How We Are to Act

Before Christ’s coming
God already teaching
sharing with us how
How we are to act

God’s message in Isaiah
in calling us to witness
to stand in the waters
a light to the nations

Offering hope
a connection to the eternal
Love from our lips
joy in our actions

God with us
calling us to witness
to offer Christ to the world
that all would be healed

Words can Destroy

Far too often
we believe the lie of the sing song
that sticks and stones will break us
but words will never hurt us

Far too often
whether on the playground
the halls of power
even in church

Words can destroy
tear down our neighbors
sowing division
starting a schism

All of us called
to be lights to the nations
shining light in the darkness
to the ends of the earth

That light is Love
the fact of Jesus
God come down
walking the earth

He modeled love
servanthood, compassion
he chose the cross
to see us free from sin

He did not destroy
Christ offered forgiveness
even on the cross
a prayer to almighty God

We should lift up
carrying His message
then we would truly be light
to pierce the darkness of this world

Words to Edify

Oh that all we say
that the words we choose
that our positions would be healing
to lift up, to edify

That none of our speech
that which we utter
that all of our discourse
would be grounded in love

Christ forgiving

When we face our neighbors
when we argue our positions
when we come together
in the marketplace of ideas

We should be mindful
guided by our Savior
standing on the grace
the rock of Almighty God

Christ forgiving,
His words healing,
even at the moment of his anguish
abandoned and dying
offering a prayer to God

Bearing witness,
love unending
power in that example
of the nature of our God

Changing our perspective
the tenor of our speaking
becoming a light to the nations
hope for the whole world

We should be grounded
standing on this message
love, not anger
healing our brokenness

Christ alive
living within us
we are to be His voice
His light to this troubled world

Thinking Before We Speak

In this time, this moment of reflection
non-violent language
should be lifted up
all of us guilty
none truly innocent
in a world defined by success
on the backs on another
in the rat race, the brass ring
beating our brother

Thinking before speaking
the scars that can be avoided
the danger in shouting
fire in a crowded room
all of us burdened,
weakened by the tenor
the language of hate
when we should be working together
striving for better
for our nation, our world

Look to Jesus
to the teachings of our Savior
Love telling us
Love should be our way
All of us unworthy
by God’s grace alone redeemed
all of us brothers, sisters
needing the Love of God

Words are dangerous

Cavalier, unthinking
shot from our mouths
the sword of our tongues
seeking gain
at the expense of our neighbors
a constant battle
our approach to discourse

Words are dangerous, when unthinking
when grounded in the world
the stuff of the earth
We are called to a different way
of love from our musings
to offer Christ to all
a light to the whole earth

Let Love inform our language
our struggles for justice
may we hear the words of old
calling us to be his servants
to offer love to all
all the people on the earth

The guiding of our Savior
lived out in his journey
of offering love
even when we were persecuting
when we denied our Maker
when we pierced our Brother’s hands
lifting him on the tree

Christ forgiving, words uplifting,
at the moment of his anguish
abandoned and dying
that we would be free
Bearing witness
the power of that example
a light to the nations
hope for the whole world

To the World

All of us called
not just to our people
to be a light to the nations
a witness to the world

Called to share
to contribute to the sharing
the message of the Christ
given to the world

We are to preach the gospel
proclaiming Jesus
offering hope, salvation
love to the world

Our light to shine
to be carried to the nations
beacons of hope
carried to the whole world

I offer my witness

To my brothers, my sisters
to the ends of the earth
I offer my witness
Your presence in my life
Nothing the same
all of my days better
centered on my Savior
who lifts me up

I offer my witness
my light in the darkness
God opening my heart
to the calling from within
leading me to share
a message to me given
the words welling up
living waters to be poured out

I will Proclaim Jesus

Maybe not in the river
standing like John
maybe not in the courts
of almighty God

Here in this place
standing on my soapbox
finding a way
to put the words into play

I will proclaim Jesus
the light of the nations
each of us carrying
a bit of our Lord

Using my gifts
what I have been given
a witness to God’s presence
lifting my trembling heart

God’s love evident
all around us
if we would be open
to see our Master’s hand

God right with us
hearing our prayers
answering, calling
if we will hear His voice calling
guiding our feet
on the journey of our lives

I will Carry God’s Light

Though I am often timid
my heart hears your calling
to be the light to the nations
sharing God’s message
hope for all the captives
all the people on earth
Give me strength Lord
that I may ever be faithful
open to your calling
to go where you will lead
to shout boldly
as Isaiah in the heavens
I will carry God’s light
to the ends of the earth

It is Joy that we carry

The light of Jesus
the message of love
it is Joy that we carry
salvation from above

Christ with us
indwelling still
guiding our feet
the path of our lives

We must sing
sharing the message
hope for our lives
in the way of the cross

Bearing God’s light
all of us lanterns
carrying this joy
to the ends of the earth

It is a Dream that we carry

All of us witnesses
to the love of Jesus
His presence in our lives
guiding our feet of clay

When we submit
choosing to carry His light
to become a light to the nations
to the ends of the earth

It is a Dream we carry
a promise of God
Hope in our salvation
coming from the Lord

All of us called
though none of us worthy
able through Christ
to come before our God

We should be humble
more caring of our neighbors
seeing the face of Christ
in everyone we meet

Treating them all
even the stranger, the enemy
as God commands us
with love in our hearts

Only when we cleave
hold fast to our Savior
when we let the Spirit guide
our timid, trembling feet

Only when we carry God’s light
His hope to the nations
only when we turn from the world
will the promise come to life

Will We Carry God’s Light?

A question for the ages
for each believer
a question for today
asked of you and me

Will we carry God’s light
will we go into the darkness
leaving the familiar
to follow the Christ

Are we true to our faith
the calling of the Spirit
are we willing to be servants
submitting our will

A calling new each day
a question from the heavens
will we carry God’s light
into the darkness of this world
