cleaning a slicer in a tutu

vivid, bright, neon, purple,
a headpiece, a crown, to match,
a broad smile, laughing,
turning to the next task…
 
effortlessly turning,
from one station to another,
cleaning a slicer in a tutu,
oh, what a joyful sight…
 
part of the family, the team,
though she is still brand new,
smiling, laughing…
what are we to do…
 
cleaning slicers in a tutu,
in the deli where I slice,
joyfully doing, serving,
embracing the work to do…

Dancing in my head – v2

Laughing, backing down our driveway,
the snowstorm abating,
NPR on the radio, talking,
Shanequa snapping gum beside me
causing me to smile…
 
She said her things were dancing in her head,
I had two she had three, our shopping list,
she had the things for Taco Night,
I had the things for mom…
 
Tomatoes, shredded cheese,
sour cream. all that we still needed,
for the Taco Night dinner,
filled with anticipation…
 
I laughed and asked if the ingredients
were dancing to a mariachi band,
She paused for a minute, thoughtfully,
and said, yes, they were…
 
Soon there would be a whirl of motion
in our kitchen, our “Kitchen Stadium!”…
Mom making the dinner,
with sous chefs swarming…

A #Hobbit #Hunt

Away from our books, our studies,
I think beer was the prize,
A Hobbit Hunt in the woods,
I had a good head start.
 
I heard them laughing,
as I lay under the leaves,
But I was found too quickly,
then it was time to leave.

A Hobbit Hunt
 
During our freshman year at UNH in 1978, my friends called me Hobbit,
Because I was the shortest of our group and because I had
A certain amount of hair on the top of my feet (smile).
Someone suggested a Hobbit Hunt in College Woods.
I hid pretty well behind a log under leaves.
It took John Labonte a while to find me.

Hurricane – v2

A hole-in-the-wall shop,

Counter and seller, that’s it.

Plastic cups and pitchers

A bit of rum, a bunch of ice

Grenadine, lemon, lime

And Passion Fruit

Step into the noise,

The crowd, the Quarter,

Listen, feel, as care

Merges with rum

Replaced with a smile

And a change in my gait

Slower, slide down the street

Sway to the sound, rhythm

Pace of the place, color and vibe

Under the porches and intrigue

Hidden in backyard gardens

Knowing glances
