The Ashes and the Cup – v4

Wednesday’s ashes
and Maundy’s cup
Sunday’s palms
and Thursday’s basin;
Anchors of this season
to this most Holy Week.

Moments of Christ’s life,
Holy, for a purpose,
before the cross, the nails,
the angry thorns, the crown;
Symbols of this walk
of our shared Lenten journey.

kindling a friendship

finding others
our friendship growing
when we had been apart
choosing sides
kindling a friendship
with the others
making up for lost time
when we were in the middle.

Palms for the Ashes – v3

My throat thick, my nostrils full
the smell of their burning heavy on my skin;
palms of the festival, of glory; “Hosannah!”,
Your triumphant entrance,
burned for the ashes, the beginning of Lent

The palms they waved, we shared,
laid at Your feet, our Savior,
the Messiah long-foretold;
A stain now, upon our skin,
remembering Your gift, Your offering

The palms burnt, the sanctuary still,
beginning a journey of remembrance;
Your choice, Your faithfulness,
Your servanthood, Your grace,
ever present in our hearts, we pray.
