breathing in Sorrow – v4

sensing Sorrow’s presence
in the fire’s sure progress,
breathing in the smoke,
deeply , deeply;
that transformation
our joy burned up
drawn into the pit.

the palms of that Sunday
covered with our hope, our prayers,
our shouts, “hosanna!”
their burning so quickly;
our dry prayers, praise,
sweet acrid smoke
becoming ashes, dust.

breathing in Sorrow
become a heavy cloak,
a physical presence;
the ashes drawn within,
into my lungs, onto my heart,
hidden, in secret, within
within my body, upon my life.

my walk different
watching the palms burn
after the smoke, the ashes
the changing of our joy to sadness,
sensing Sorrow’s presence
with me in this season
in life, in memory.
