A reminder in His words
the words of the master
that we are chosen, offered,
given the choice
how we will respond
to accept His love, to follow Him
or remained conformed to the world
to love as He loved, to bear lasting fruit
to love others as He loved
able to choose the reward
because He chose us first

Lasting Fruit
Commanded, appointed, to bear fruit
to bear lasting fruit
love, abiding in him
in the Father, in the vine
loving as He loved, as He loves,
as He has commanded us
our neighbors, our brothers, our sisters
all who are in need.
A legacy, eternal fruit
love the fruit we are called to bear
a harvest of souls to feed
with our living example
Christ’s sacrifice, God’s love
His endless grace
living in our witness and over lives
in each successive generation
to the ends of the earth
and to the ends of the age.

Join the Hundreds of People Who Say "No!" to Torture
Tell President Obama and Congress only the truth will set us free!
Dear [[First Name]],
The United Methodist Church has taken an unequivocal stand against torture in any form. While President Obama's Executive Order banned the use of torture, there still remains the need for past actions by the United States to be fully known so that we can make sure we never torture again.
In only a few short days, hundreds have added their name to the Truth Will Set You Free petition. We want to add hundreds, if not thousands more to this and we need your help! (http://www.umc-gbcs.org/site/c.frLJK2PKLqF/b.5128831/k.521B/United_Methodists_Do_Not_Torture/apps/ka/ct/contactus.asp?c=frLJK2PKLqF&b=5128831&en=lmKSL6PVImLVL6NRLkIXL6NRJmL4KbPUIhIYJhN5JwIfH&tr=y&auid=4857329)
Send this to your friends, family, and fellow church members.
Torture Awareness Month
June is Torture Awareness Month. We are joining with the National Religious Coalition Against Torture (NRCAT) to encourage churches to engage in any number of educational activities to raise awareness about the need to end torture once and for all! Please visit NRCAT's website (www.nrcat.org) for more details.
I hope you and your church will join!

A Cloud of Strawberry
Open the windows, air out the house
a cloud of strawberry, spreading
filling, living, growing,
moving from room to room
lingering too, on her fingers
in her hair, on her skin, her clothes
an aura following her, scent trails;
just as I had done, long ago,
finding, discovering, sharing
strawberry spray, liberated
from a point of origin
a brushfire throughout the house

My own adventures with strawberry spray
40 years earlier at my Aunt Ruth’s house
a cloud of strawberry, spreading
filling, living, growing,

in her hair, on her skin, her clothes
an aura following her, scent trails;
just as I had done, long ago,

Lilac Air
Sweet, intoxicating, alluring
spreading out onto the playground
the bush changing the air
soft, subtle, a presence
lilac air at the side of the school
calling, enticing the passersby
to linger, to drink
aerosol nectar
sweet, lively spring perfume
a perfect fragrance,
rich with memory
under a cloudy blue sky
warm this Wednesday afternoon
Living bouquet,
a balance of purple, of green
set off against, before
red brick of the school

Prayers in Song
Around the table, smiles rising
a prayer of grace, song from her mouth
from their mouths, greeting God
stopping the day, this moment
singing grace to the creator
thanking Him for the food,
for the air, the life we have
Asking, praying, that we would use
this food to strengthen us
that we would be your servants
and do your will

Choosing Who Will Pray
So many times, like a teacher in a classroom
choosing who will pray, over the food
Their hands, their bodies thrust into the air
as students who know the math problem
who have a thought, an answer to share
Each of them asking to be the one
that meal, that moment, to be the one to pray
Competitive, the sisters, to speak to God
We often share the prayer, the amen, the words
so that they may participate,
join together in the blessing
all of praying together

Holding Hands in Prayer
Her little hand in mine,
her mother’s hand in the other
joining together around the table
saying grace, holding hands
Offering a special prayer
rising from their small voices
their loud singing mouths
thanking God for the food
praying we would be open
willing to give all to You

An Unanswered Question
How familiar, the words intoned
If this is your will, oh God…,
so begins the prayer
an unanswered question
of fact, of faith;
left on His altar, at the rail,
part of the plan of the potter
shaped, turned, turning
revealed, as always
in God’s time alone

Intermittent Showers
Work, play, the yard, the garden
under sunny, cloudy skies
intermittent showers, mist, discrete drops
never truly rain, just showers,
drizzle, mostly sunny above
Cutting of the branches, mowing the lawn
turning the sod for the garden
on the bicycles, the roller blades
the balls, the swings out back
all under intermittent showers

Giving to the Spade
The sod, the earth, willingly
giving to the bite of my spade,
soil rich wet loam, clean
clear of rocks, of roots
turning easily to my toil
moving down the row
inch by inch, yard by yard
a lawn being transformed
another step toward becoming
a garden for summer bounty.

Earning Their Names
Turkeys, a pair, maybe more in the bushes
sailing, low-flying across the highway
oblivious, unaware
filling my windshield, the horizon line
climbing the hill
more gliding than flying,
not a care in the world
ignoring the speeding traffic
that could easily ruin their days

A Grapevine
The church, a grapevine
entwined branches
abiding in God
Being love, nurturing
welcoming children
caring for one another
the vine, branches, twigs,
creating lush living fruit
full grapes, for the harvest
Living as the vine, the body
our brothers, sisters
all part of the vine
growing together, as one
lives knitted together
following the example
the love of our brother
the risen Christ
fully abiding in the vine.

A Knitted Vine
Connected, intertwined,
the branches, the vine
knitted together, strong,
growing, loving, nurturing
the branches, the vine, touching
linked one to another,
stitched, the threads,
the branches, the twigs,
the stem, the root,
all knitted, one vine
bearing fruit
in community, as one
living, abiding in our Lord

Growing Grapes
Not in isolation, single branches,
struggling alone in the storms;
in connection, interlocking, twined branches
growing grapes, fruits of the vine
best in community, all of the vine
The church, the vine, the branches
in communion with the creator
grafted, growing in the Lord
each a part of the whole, each supporting
the growing of the grapes
those for whom we toil,
for whom our praise is made aloud
for whom our service is made known
the fruits of the vine,
the grapes in their season
a harvest to reap
a libation to be poured out
for the glory of God
struggling alone in the storms;
in connection, interlocking, twined branches
growing grapes, fruits of the vine
best in community, all of the vine
The church, the vine, the branches
in communion with the creator
grafted, growing in the Lord
each a part of the whole, each supporting
the growing of the grapes
those for whom we toil,
for whom our praise is made aloud
for whom our service is made known
the fruits of the vine,
the grapes in their season
a harvest to reap
a libation to be poured out
for the glory of God

The Church of Today
Our children, the living heart
the church of today, now
not some future, the church of tomorrow
The core, our focus, the vine, the body
branches living together, connected
in community, abiding in our God
for the children, the fruit
those who are hungry
Our works, our lives
part of the vine, branches,
twigs, fruits
all for the glory of God.

They are the Grapes
Clustered in the branches
not individuals, not the branches,
not the fruits, clusters, a bunch of grapes
not a single branch, a coil of branches
a living vine bearing much fruit
the church, the congregation
and the children of the flock
They are the grapes, the fruit of the vine
we are the grapes, the fruit as well
not merely branches, bearing fruit
but fruit ourselves,
of those who labored before us
the living vine, eternal, as God
abiding in us, we in God
Living as long as He lives.

Fruits of the Vine
Smiling faces, the running feet
squealing voices, the happy smiles
sitting, squirming, in the pews
at the feet of the master
in our arms this morning
the children of the world,
of our congregation
the fruits of the vine
the harvest yet to come
the living church,
they are the church of today
one of our reasons for existing
the vine growing, the branches abiding
the vine, the body, the church universal
bearing up, raising up, the fruits of the vine

They are the Fruits
They are the fruits
the children of our faith
the grapes of the vine,
being nurtured, cared for
pruned, watered, the sunshine
the connection to the vine
the interwoven, living vine
the roots, the stem, the branches
all working for the growth
the harvest of the fruits
the grapes of the vine
living together, abiding
in the arms of the living vine

Branches and Grapes
Living in the vine, abiding
in the love of the creator
living in the vine, abiding
in the strength of the savior
branches and grapes, at the same time
the branches bearing fruit
and the fruit itself, of the vine,
of the branches, of our parents
of others in the faith
who have gone before.
Living in the vine
branches and grapes
connected to Christ
a harvest for God

Grapes
See the children, singing in sanctuary
laughing, running in the church
they are the grapes, the fruit of the vine
ones for whom we are all called to be branches
We are to be connected,
a living, growing, vibrant vine
each of us branches, each of us fruits too
the fruit of other older branches,
all connected in community
each growing stronger together, the living vine
and the intertwined, supporting branches
the fruits of the vine,
not merely of individual branches
fruits of the whole community, the living vine

The Vine
Living in the vine,
connected, to its strength
to the love, life-giving succor
sustenance of the vine
feeding the branches, the father,
the son, the apostles, the saints
the living spirit flowing through
still nourishing the branches, the twigs,
the shoots, the very tips, bearing fruit
for the one who planted the garden
the vineyard in the world
preparing a bounty, a harvest
beyond compare

A Mother God
The Vine, like the womb,
the umbilical cord; but more
never to be severed, never cut
the vine a part of us, lifelong
feeding us, giving us strength
a connection to God,
to one another, a family of faith
living in, abiding in the vine
abiding in God, in the love of God
a mother God, in the nature of the vine
helping us bear fruit for a hungry world

Grapes on the Vine
The children in our congregation,
in the community, the world
the grapes of the vine,
the fruit of the work of the gardener
the vine and its branches
there for the feeding, the nourishing
the protecting, the growth of the fruit
We all, all part of the vine
connected, sharing, watching over them
the children, the fruit for the harvest
for the kingdom yet to come
