seeing the pain upon her

the words of scarce comfort
though she had believed all her life
her youngest taken from her
before her prime of life
seeing the pain upon her
her white knuckles holding the chair
knowing only part of what she felt
on that awful day

no more pain, no wars

God will make all things new
no tears, no loss anymore
heaven and earth restored

beyond the pain of cancer

the words so easy to speak
as an observer, outside
to try to assuage their pain
even if we believe this
their loved one,
taken from them
a cavity, a gaping wound
the only solace, the hope
that they are beyond the pain of cancer
drinking of the waters
in the gates of the Lord
but knowing too their pain
a life that will not be restored

Only by the hand of God – v2

a word about how we know
God is with us
a hand upon our back
in our time of struggle

an image of Grammy
frozen in her chair
knowing only God’s hand
raised her from that seat

when the pastor called her forward
to kneel at the coffin
to say goodbye to her youngest
to let her go to heaven

Blood Red, Burgundy – v3

In the road
fallen, before us
a broken rose
picked probably
yesterday, then forgotten

A deep rich color
of blood red, burgundy
lying there, discarded
out of place on the blacktop

Bending down, required
cupping shattered petals
the crushed bloom
still beautiful

Limp petals, cradled in my hand
bending, folding, swaying
in the breath of the wind
like a shear silk
a softness against my skin

Putting the rose gently
in a glass of water
floating now, effortlessly
as if it was gossamer
or made of living paper

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be they name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

A Spring Rain

The world is wet today
luxurious, damp, drenched
drops hug the leaves,
anoint the still budded lilac blossoms
before their blooming
rich purple and plum
made richer by their watery skin
New leaves under the weight
droplets heavy, hanging
bowing the white pine needles
undersides exposed to drink
drink in the morning
hushed in the rain
temperature near the dewpoint
sprouts of just planted flowers
eager from the parched soil
new puddles bloom too
on the ground, the driveway
collect and gather
without the smell of summer rain yet
tears splash and spread
silent shimmers, heralds, messengers
in the spring rain

no more separation

no more separation
no divide between God and man

all as dry land

the new has come

Talcum powder petals – v3

The wet apple blossoms
blanketing the street
the grass covered
white by their feet

Talcum powder petals
like cool paper between my fingers
soft, light, yet laden
with water from the gutter

Nothing impure or unclean

We make it complicated
when it is so simple
nothing impure or unclean
all creatures clean
all good to eat

All God’s people
meant to share together
to sit at the table
to lift each other up

The separation we created
not something affirmed by God
all clean before our Maker
all sheep of his flock
equal before our God

In my vision

Standing in the sandals
the shoes of Peter
sharing with the elders
those in Jerusalem

In my vision
a great sheet descending
all creatures called clean
by the voice of God

We are too exclusive
barring the others
we must eat
with the other sheep

No one unworthy
all people clean
all to our table;
come, let’s eat.
