centuries later – v2

To us this is ancient history
reading holy scripture
to him it was prophecy
of what was to be,
centuries later.
 
Many, many generations
more than hundreds of years
in his distant future
to him these were a mystery
the rise of recognizable kingdoms.
 
The End Times are still yet to come
But, like the other steps,
this too will come, certain,
Prophecy will be fulfilled,
in a time of God’s own choosing.

strands of history pulled up

the Book of Life, written;

The First Commandment – v4

The First Commandment

written on the stone tablets

carried from the mountain by Moses

for all of God’s people:

“You shall have no other gods before me”,

A timeless statement, unending,

the test of our loyalty

the faith of all people, devoted to God.

In their time, in that place

in the desert, the Tabernacle

far from the Temple

the City, God’s people

united as one

under one commandment,

one sovereign God.

But there in that wilderness

before the craven idol, in Babylon,

before the King demanding to be hailed as god;

Refusing to bow, to deny the Creator

honoring the words written so long ago;

Prepared to be burned,

to submit to the furnace

entering in, faithful to God.

In Their Hearts – v2

The tablets, the commandments

written in their hearts;

Trusting in God, heeding His call;

going into the world.

Speaking with conviction

with the power of the Spirit;

Refusing to bow down

to any other god.

Acting, in fealty

loyal to the Creator;

Honoring His words

and the love He shares.

Willing to enter

to be thrown in the furnace

better that than to deny our God

to deny their faith.

the smell of the smoke – 2 – v3

unlike in the Book of Daniel

the story of the fiery furnace,

when Christ walked with them

in their time of trial

the smell of the smoke

is still heavy upon us,

when they touched us

inappropriately

unlike in the Book of Daniel

we carry the smoke upon us,

for most taking many years

even to speak of these moments

The piece that caught my attention was the statements about God placing hands on the side of the boy’s heart while being sexually abused.

Unlike the story of the fiery furnace in Daniel 3:1-30, where Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had no smell of smoke on them, victims of sexual abuse do have the smell of the smoke of that evil upon them, even as God was with them in the fire.

by a stranger on a bike path between my house and the bottle dump where

I liked to go digging. It was over 25 years before I mentioned it to anyone.
