The First Commandment
written on the stone
tablets
carried from the
mountain by Moses
for all of God’s
people:
“You shall have no
other gods before me”,
A timeless
statement, unending,
the test of our
loyalty
the faith of all
people, devoted to God.
In their time, in
that place
in the desert, the
Tabernacle
far from the Temple
the City, God’s
people
united as one
under one commandment,
one sovereign God.
But there in that
wilderness
before the craven
idol, in Babylon,
before the King
demanding to be hailed as god;
Refusing to bow, to
deny the Creator
honoring the words written
so long ago;
Prepared to be
burned,
to submit to the
furnace
entering in,
faithful to God.
