Living Water, the Stain of His Blood

The altar this morning draped,
brightened by living water,
by the royal stain of His blood
vivid shimmering color, textured, flowing
beside the open bible,
below the cross, the lighted candles
a mere hint of the grandeur
the hem, the robe of the creator,
filling the temple

Our Pentecost

More than the day in Jerusalem,
this day in Caesarea, in the home of Cornelius
Our Pentecost, our moment of saving, truly
our time given power, authority, proof of our salvation
all of us equal, all worthy, deserving
of the gift of grace, of our Savior’s love
all people, who love God, who strive after righteousness
all who love their neighbor;
All assured the future life, of the spirit’s comfort
of a home with our God

A Personal Pentecost

As if they needed proof, confirmation
that the words of the apostle were true
God placed an exclamation point
of the promise, the words of saving, equality
Like the first, they received the same tongues of fire
the flames of Pentecost, descending on Cornelius
on his family, his whole house, assurance
all would be saved, all given the spirit’s song
all, no matter race, or gender, no barriers
a personal Pentecost available to all

At Peter’s Feet

An outsider, within his own home
falling to his knees, falling at Peter’s feet
a revelation of his own doubts
the fence he had erected, tended
barring him from our God
Unworthy, unclean, not measuring up
Falling at the apostle’s feet
Rising at Peter’s urging, his word, of love, of grace
his word of equality, of oneness
Rising in praise, to hear Christ’s message
to hear we are all worthy
God’s love, his saving,
available to one and all,
no differences a barrier any longer

Fences

By claiming the creator
we create fences, hemming in the divine
that God loves one group, one people
more than any others, setting us apart
one from another, from God
God tears down these fences
all are welcome, receiving, grace
each one, equally blessed
all children, brothers, sisters
of Christ, our king

A Particular Fence

An invisible fence, a particular barrier
living within our minds, our hearts alone
that what we do is not enough
that somehow God’s grace
is not open to us, that we have failed
that our sin is greater
All have sinned and fallen short of the law
all needing God’s love, the son’s sacrifice
the gift, unmerited, of salvation
No fence exists, to keep us from God
if we but love him; we are equally blessed
God loves us as we are now
