They were Four, Five, Six and Ten,
or if you prefer, they were
Green, Yellow, Blue, and Red,
their mouths that is, the wonderful
colors of kids caught in the allure
of lollipops, lollipops
in big open bowls on the desk
at the bank in the grocery store
Hurry Daddy, we want a lollipop
you’ll have to wait, oh but it is so hard
to stand in a line, wait for the teller
look expectantly, sheepishly, urgently
oh, don’t forget, boldly
hurry and unwrap it
so sweet, so fun, sitting on the bench
she laughed and I saw it, the blue
blue tongue, blue lips, blue teeth
they saw it too, howling, checking their own
smiling for each other, say cheese
wonderful lollipop lips

Excuse Me, Your Honor
I rose to ask a question
feeling unsure, a bit ill at ease
like Bob Cratchett asking for coal
or Oliver asking for more porridge
excuse me, your honor…
it was funny, his reaction
a sense, an awareness
of the absurdity of the formality
asking for a point of clarification
offering correction, refinement
precision in the writing,
the specific language
of the agreement.
I got a thank you.

Sunning on the Sandbar
Four ducks, before mid-morning
sitting, facing the sun,
wings hugging against their bodies
sitting still in the sunbeams
warming the sandbar
in the brook
just off the Merrimack
A moment of tranquility
just off the highway
as we all rushed on by
I wonder how many others
saw them, noticed their
still brown forms on the brown
of the sandbar
surrounded by the dark waters
sitting, facing the sun,
wings hugging against their bodies
sitting still in the sunbeams
warming the sandbar
in the brook
just off the Merrimack
A moment of tranquility
just off the highway
as we all rushed on by

Fading Slides
Long forgotten memories
were preserved on the thin skin
on the slides in the trays
in the box, crushed years ago
at the back of the closet
in the spare bedroom
of mom’s house
We share so much on them
trips, special times, everyday life
fading now
grain by grain, eaten away
ghosts dimming in the
little bits of celluloid
in the cardboard squares
in the plastic trays
annotated and cataloged
but slipping away
in fading images
of the emulsion
on the slides
from our youth

One-Eyed Dog
I remember him all so vividly
like it was so recent
far fewer than the close to forty years ago
that it actually is
My grandfather bought me a membership
a membership in the YMCA,
I was in first, maybe second, grade
I’d walk the three blocks
from Abner Gibbs to the Y
But I’d be watching for him
wary, nervous, ill at ease
He was always there on Noble Street
like he wasn’t let in
scaring me, spooking me
One-eye of the beagle
stitched shut, long since healed
a blank space, light like that around it
a hollow sorrowful gap
haunting me, running away
to learn to swim, the get away
look for Grampa, in the boiler room
in the filter room at the Y

Forgotten History
A discovery in the boxed memories
forgotten history of childhood,
adolescence, years gone by
pearls in the oyster
treasures in the dark
still places, quiet like the grave
dirty too, with the dust of time
urging me to look further
in the next box
for another nugget
sifted from the stream bed
among the rocks
and the gravel

Boxed Memories
There were boxes
every shape and size
attic, basement, storage space
still, quiet, frozen in time
forgotten boxes of shards and fragments
treasured memories rediscovered
inconvenient parts too
things painful to keep
awkward to discard
hard to open, connect the pieces
aged, weathered boxes, yellowed tape
dust covered, water stained cardboard
memories in boxes
forgotten parts of me
who I was, who I am

Frozen Water
The camera caught the water
froze it at a moment of time
preserved as drops, bits of eternity
etched right there
on the square of film
seeing what the human eye cannot see
the beauty in the pauses between
the rushing water
over rock and falls
broken into tiny droplets
saved and framed on my wall

Another Step
Another step on a long road
to keep them safe,
to build our family,
one step at a time
to do what it takes,
go through the process,
through the courts
to break a bond, stitch another
in its place, filling the empty place
making lemonade
when we can

Blueberry Stories
A moment of panic
assuaged by the promise
the musing, the utterance
Oh, she’ll come back,
with “Blueberry Stories”
And she will, she told me
in hearing this story, this tale
of four-year-old fears
of losing their Pastor Lori
in the wilds of the Downeast
the wilds of Maine
The departing of the mission trip
only a day away
needing the assurance
of the faithful return
to still the trembling lip
the welling up of her eyes
this morning

Sing
Oh if I could sing
sing like you
with that strong bright voice
share my joy in the singing
reach for the note, find my voice
send a chill through them as you do
what a feeling it must be
to touch them with that gift
your voice
in praise

Flash of Joy – v2
February 2, 2004 11:44
Flash of Joy
– Written in reaction to the response to the poem “Into
Being”
by Roberta Woods –
“Love it! You've
captured the essence of writing not as a discipline but as joy. And it is because it is pure joy (the agony
comes later during revision) it is not a discipline in the sense of having
rigid edges. All doing from joy is a
gift to the doer as well as the recipient whether cooking, writing, gardening
or any other activity. My joy activities
are writing and carpentry. All the rest
require me to have discipline to get them done. –Roberta”

Into Being
– About the process of writing as merely writing down the
words, suggested by Roberta Woods earlier in the day. I see her point, based on
the way my writing often comes quickly. Even when I edit it as I write, it is
more to get it right/write. We had been talking about “one-book wonders” and
had segwayed into a discussion of how she writes daily and how, when she starts
writing a story, it often is prolific.

His Telephone Voice
I heard an echo of it,
as I spoke to a prospective client
it was his voice
his telephone voice
a decibel louder
an octave or two lower
To command authority,
attention, assuage fears
show confidence
his business phone voice
so different, easily turned on
when needed.

Not Yet Sleeping Beauties
We giggled and laughed
at the bright pop of the flash
in the dark bedroom
a little family fun
right before sleep
hiding under covers
hold still, settle in
slow down

answer to her prayers,
I showed her scripture

A Walk in the Woods
sitting at the end of the dinner
thinking of a walk in the woods
just before fall
not in the deep unfamiliar thick forest
no something familiar
suburban woods
looking for opportunities for discovery,
for moments of wonder
in simple things
curled leaves, a translucent leaf
from another season,
sprigs of checkerberries
princess pine
moss on the lee of the fallen oak
a chipmunk darting through leaf litter
a dragonfly disturbed
at the edge of the field
nearby

Tea Ring
Not coffeecake
though they evoke memories too
no it was a tea ring,
cinnamon, raisins, white icing
and a maraschino cherry
sitting cooling on the hearth
warm from the oven
waiting for the lighting of the tree
the start of Christmas morning
before the stockings and the presents

A Face in the Curtain
A face smiled at me
from across the room
caught in the shadows and folds
of the floral patterned valance
above the window in the bedroom
watching me fall to sleep
a head alone, a male face
tilted slightly to his right
a broad chin, a slight smile
the ridge of his nose
two eyes stet just as they should be
not to wide, certainly not beady.
a left jaw line, hint of an ear
forehead melting into bunting and gathers
noticed for the first time

Returning the Elements
After the communion
returning the elements
to the ground
gently sharing
the bread, the wheat
the blood, the vine
to parched giving soil
sharing his echo,
his form of remembrance
Carefully breaking the pieces
for the birds of the air
pouring out the wine for
the crawling things of the earth
life giving nourishment
bread and water of life
completing our communion
through Him
with all of creation

Circle of Life (Web)
We are connected
one another, every moment,
every place, every cell,
every movement, every utterance
each action, reverberates
echoes, across time,
through space
splits, echoes back
in millions of waves
from different points
on the expanding sphere encircling
each speck, each tiny spot
each one of us, infinitesimal
members clinging to the web
for dear life

The Intimacy of Informality
Words not rituals
casual, heart-felt words
telling the real story
of the greatest sacrifice
in all of human history
finding words to speak
of the awesome nature
of the death of an innocent
a deity paying our price
Words in a tone of transparency
taking risks, risks worth taking
to reach each questioning sheep
each member of the flock
Painful words, hope filled words
more so
for the wisdom, the prescience
the enormity of understanding

Singing the Mystery
That the light of the earth,
light from heaven
was snuffed out
suffered humiliating
all to human death
that he rose
miraculously, as it was written,
rose from the blackness of death
that he, he himself
will come again
in final glory
to judge those then living
and all the dead, from all the ages
a holy mystery
in our song, in our communal singing
singing that uplifts, sends chills
if we listen while we sing
