guiding the nations
will be called to account
in the dock of history
The ledgers will be opened
the good and the bad
all will be known
in the pages of history
Did they stand with the people
did they act for justice
not just crying out for freedom
but acting in the breach
Did they cower and negotiate
or did they act boldly
to set the captives free
and hold the despots to account
How will history judge each one
when their time in power is done

practicing a holy Lent
denying ourselves our sin
our focus on the earth
Spending with Jesus
walking with him

Fasting of the things of the world
the excesses of this life

each of us the Prodigal
During this season looking
drawing within
to prepare ourselves more fully
for the day of our joy
our lives beginning anew
when Christ rose from the dead
Each of us on a journey
more focused in this season
spending time studying his word
and spending time in silence
denying our bodies sins of the flesh
our focus more on God
standing in your temple
or falling to our knees
All of this worthy
part of our spirit of repentance
trying in our own way
to respond to the joy inside
to go where we are called
to offer a balm of hope
spreading that the joy we fee
to everyone on earth

I rent my heart
torn in the moment
not my clothes
not just the surface
my life torn
my heart rent open
knowing your suffering
dying in my place
An open wound
the fabric of my being
the flesh of my heart
crying for you
knowing your dying
as the sacrifice
your choice to come down

In the season of Lent
remembering my dust
how far below
I am than Christ
Yet he died for me
taking on my sin
paying the price I owed
on the rugged cross
In ashes I stand
falling to my knees
sure of my faith
what I truly believe
He is the Messiah
the one who was foretold
in rising redeeming
restoring my soul
From the dust I came
but breathed with God’s love
filled with his Spirit
not returning to dust
Changed from my clay
the stuff of this earth
by Christ’s resurrection
enjoying new birth
Sharing this message
the font of his grace
pouring forth a river
never to be stopped
The words I am sharing
given by God
may I ever praise him

In this season starting
in ashes and repentance
Reflecting on our calling
our lives for a purpose
to love our neighbors, our enemies
even as ourselves
To walk in our faith
to be the shining light
remaining the stuff of clay
the salt of the earth
Marked by the cross
the name of the Christ
ashes on our heads
and his name on our hearts
Defining us by his walk
our shepherd before us
called to love the world
and to forgive our neighbors
Hard to do in the dog-eat-dog
the Horatio Alger world
but easier when we remember
God’s loving word
We are unable
to redeem ourselves to God
needing the sacrifice of Christ
his blood poured on the cross
We must be mindful
needing his grace

that I may be renewed
fill me with love
that I am imbued
Show me your grace
going to the cross
teach me to live
whatever the cost
Let me be love
pouring out of me
yoked beside you
that I would be free
Needing your presence
to even begin to live
fill me completely
that I may give
All I am to you
offering up your love
feeling you on me
touched by the dove
Going out to spread the news
He is the risen Lord
not by what we do
by grace is our reward

Every bit of my being
in every fiber
soak me in love
the source of all strength
Teach me to live
to walk in your grace
guide me home
that I may see your face

the ruler of my life
show me the way
to bring others into life
Wash me clean
