Speaking from their hearts
against cruel choices
petitioning for redress
before the leaders
praying for justice
assistance from their neighbors
because of their need
Crying out
in the seat of power
out of fear speaking
facing devastation
a loss of their freedom
by choices being made
to cut the state budget

To Abandon Their Children

the unthinkable
to give up their homes

I Beg You
The plea of a mother
of others speaking
joining together
as if with one voice
I beg you to reconsider
the precipice before us
the choice you are making
leading to the pit
A judgment on us all
if we continue on this path
how we treat our neighbors
our hands on their heads
becoming our sacrifice

Calloused Stewards
Each of us challenged
to be warm hearted
compassion for our neighbors
lifting them up
Will we be judged
as calloused stewards
hard-hearted choices
cutting services
on the back of our neighbors
Can we afford
in the covenant of our people
the commitment to each other
to remove this funding
to limit the freedoms
to the least of our people
when we choose to freeze taxes
on the richest of us

An Immoral Choice
The mirror before us
the filter of Christ
his life before us
in this season of Lent
The choices he made
to become the sacrifice
to give his life
that we may live
How do we compare
in the choices we are making
in what we choose to fund
who we lift up
and who are left behind

The Reason for Our Hope
Revering Christ
as Lord of our lives
the reason for our hope
the joy welling up
the peace that we feel
in the recesses of our hearts
Giving us joy
wanting us to share

Is this Love
Denying services
a voice, life
taking their freedom
to save a few dimes
pennies of the budget
but at the cost of their lives
Is this love
caring for our neighbor
guided by the commands
the guiding of God’s hands
to lift up our brothers
to love all fellow man
to love them as we would want
to be loved by their hand

Cruel Choices
On their backs
on the least and the last
balancing the budget
on those who cannot speak
Cuts on the page
and out of their lives
cruel choices of expediency
easy duty, sometimes
goring another’s ox

Truly in Need
Those who look to us
to simply survive
truly in need
needing our love
our compassion
our hope for their lives
giving, offering them
hope from all of us
society caring,
lifting them up
caring for their needs
that they may simply live

Our Fellow Citizens
Those not speaking
their advocates only
speaking for them
our fellow citizens
looking to us
counting on us
to hear their cries
to live, to be free
freedoms we enjoy
the tight to live their life
in dignity each day

To fulfill our destiny
All of our prayers
to walk with you
to heed your calling
our purpose in this life
To fulfill our destiny
our gifts in this world
doing, going, ever
where we are called
To live our calling
for which we all are created
guided by our Savior
giving him our all

Unto Dust
The stuff of my life
my body, my flesh
from the dust I came
unto dust to return
Simple, all are mortal
coming from the earth
molded by the potter
the life in my clay
The gossamer of my body
returning to dust
my spirit rising
high above the earth

The Children, the Aged, the Disabled
Those who count on us
the children, the aged, the disabled
unable to speak for themselves
those not sitting at the table
We are their guardians
the stewards of their lives
we should be better than this
in this nation of such riches
Parens patriae, all of us caring
the covenant we owe them
to provide for their needs
never to be left behind
None of the cuts to come
should fall on the helpless
those unable to care for themselves
Those needing the State for protection

In the Dock of History
Those who would be leaders
guiding the nations
will be called to account
in the dock of history
The ledgers will be opened
the good and the bad
all will be known
in the pages of history
Did they stand with the people
did they act for justice
not just crying out for freedom
but acting in the breach
Did they cower and negotiate
or did they act boldly
to set the captives free
and hold the despots to account
How will history judge each one
when their time in power is done
March 11, 2011
calling on President Obama
to speak out and act in the Middle East
to stand with the people
yearning to breathe free
and not worrying about the results,
that it is always right to stand for basic human rights
&
on the transformations since the beginning of January -
all the protests in Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Oman,
Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Palestinian Territories, Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, etc.

Repentance
In moments of reflection
looking at our lives
self-examination, inward
drawing closer to God
Repentance of our folly
of our stubborn sin
of turning from you
oh where to be begin
So many moments
choosing the wrong path
wanting to be near you
walking in your way
Hope in my turning
spending time with you
leading me homeward
when my work is through

“Michelle and I join with millions of Christians
here and across the world to mark Ash Wednesday.
As we observe the season of Lent, we receive
with thanksgiving this opportunity for grace and repentance,
recommit ourselves to our faith, and
remember our obligations to one another.”

looking at our lives
self-examination, inward
drawing closer to God
Repentance of our folly
of our stubborn sin
of turning from you
oh where to be begin
So many moments
choosing the wrong path
wanting to be near you
walking in your way
Hope in my turning
spending time with you
leading me homeward
when my work is through

Fasting
Fasting, self-denial
giving up distractions
things of this world
getting in the way
Time freed from things
to do’s and eating
spending time instead
sitting with our Father
Our lives changed
if we conform to this season
letting Lent wrap around us
warm in the embrace of God
Giving up little things
to gather at his feet
to feel the saints with us
offering so much to teach
Listening in these moments
reclaimed from other things
in fasting and self-denial
drawing closer to God

Devote Our Lives
We lean on you, Lord
to find the strength
the will to change our world
to devote our lives
To the calling of the Spirit
God speaking within
changing us in an instant
when we let the Savior in
All of us gifted
some special gift
called to be a blessing
every day that we live
To use all our energies
every thought, every word
to see forgiveness,
peace in this world

Looking within

slowing down our lives
looking in
self-examination

to offer hope to our neighbor

our savior calling to us
to be with him this day
to walk beside him always

in this season
slowing down our lives
looking in
self-examination
taking stock of our lives
Wanting to be more humble
to walk more closely
to offer hope to our neighbor
and standing with our brother
our savior calling to us
to be with him this day
to walk beside him always
to let him guide our way

A Holy Lent - 2
Changing our routine
practicing a holy Lent
denying ourselves our sin
our focus on the earth
Spending with Jesus
walking with him
spending time in the scripture
God’s message for us
Fasting of the things of the world
the excesses of this life
praying for the Spirit to indwell
to guide the steps of our path
Hearing his voice calling
in the stillness of our souls
feeling God within us
in the beating of our hearts

During this season
Staring at our lives
where we are failing
how we walk away
each of us the Prodigal
During this season looking
drawing within
to prepare ourselves more fully
for the day of our joy
our lives beginning anew
when Christ rose from the dead
Each of us on a journey
more focused in this season
spending time studying his word
and spending time in silence
denying our bodies sins of the flesh
our focus more on God
standing in your temple
or falling to our knees
All of this worthy
part of our spirit of repentance
trying in our own way
to respond to the joy inside
to go where we are called
to offer a balm of hope
spreading that the joy we fee
to everyone on earth

Spiritual Preparation - 2
A season of waiting
of spiritual preparation
coming closer to God
to understand the gravity
the moment of this time
the weight of his choice
God come to earth
but choosing to die for us
Hearing his message for us
in the recesses of our hearts
his Word written for us
on the tissue of our lives

Humble in Our Witness
Sure of our joy
the indwelling of the Spirit
walking with our Savior
all the days of our life
Humble in our witness
not pompous, off-putting
offering love instead
to everyone we meet
God here with us
living beside us on our walk
caring for our troubles
our struggles in this life
Here with us now
and each tomorrow
lifting us from the dust
with us in each sorrow
Redeeming us from death
by the sacrifice of Christ
preparing a place for us
at the end of this life
Ever may we lift our praise
sing from grateful hearts
sowing seeds of his lift
each of us with a part
Authentic in our witness
humble in our walk
love for all of the people we meet
to the ends of the earth

Willing to Answer Clearly
Always at the ready
to share our joy inside
bearing our witness
with nothing to hide
Going humbly, gently
walking on the earth
offering our joy inside
that all would have new birth
Willing to answer clearly
how Christ changed our life
bearing our witness gently

to share our joy inside
bearing our witness
with nothing to hide
Going humbly, gently
walking on the earth
offering our joy inside
that all would have new birth
Willing to answer clearly
how Christ changed our life
bearing our witness gently
carrying our Savior’s light

The Reason for My Hope
Ready to share
to offer them Christ
the reason for my hope
the love I feel inside
God’s mercy boundless
sending to earth his son
redeeming me from the dust
when my life here is done
A life in the highest
seated in heaven above
surrounded by the chorus
basking in God’s love

Ready to Witness
Always be ready
in the name of our Savior
to share our witness

To share with our neighbors,

the grace of God

the change in our hearts
in the indwelling of the Spirit
leading us on

Rent Our Hearts
Lord, in our stillness
understanding the distance
the gap between us
filled only by Christ
Rent our hearts
tear us wide open
a new heart in you
changed to the way
Following Christ
our faces bright with oil
walking with you
communing with our Savior
Rent our hearts
tear us wide open
new creatures in knowing
he is by our side
Christ died for us
taking our poison
the nails on the cross
ours for our sin
Rent our hearts
tear us wide open
crying for the pain
we caused him to bear

Rent My Heart
I rent my heart
torn in the moment
not my clothes
not just the surface
my life torn
my heart rent open
knowing your suffering
dying in my place
An open wound
the fabric of my being
the flesh of my heart
crying for you
knowing your dying
as the sacrifice
your choice to come down
to climb the rugged cross
going in my place
to the cross, the grave
only in your rising
am I truly saved

The Next Steps of Faith
Listening, stilling ourselves
waiting for a message
communing with God
waiting for his blessing
hearing his voice
calling us on
in this season with him
the next steps of faith
where he would lead us
leading us on
in humble submission
following Christ’s example
giving himself
giving himself for us
that we would live

Ashes - 2
In the season of Lent
remembering my dust
how far below
I am than Christ
Yet he died for me
taking on my sin
paying the price I owed
on the rugged cross
In ashes I stand
falling to my knees
sure of my faith
what I truly believe
He is the Messiah
the one who was foretold
in rising redeeming
restoring my soul
From the dust I came
but breathed with God’s love
filled with his Spirit
not returning to dust
Changed from my clay
the stuff of this earth
by Christ’s resurrection
enjoying new birth
Sharing this message
the font of his grace
pouring forth a river
never to be stopped
The words I am sharing
given by God
may I ever praise him
my Savior, my Lord

To Love Our Neighbors
In this season starting
in ashes and repentance
Reflecting on our calling
our lives for a purpose
to love our neighbors, our enemies
even as ourselves
To walk in our faith
to be the shining light
remaining the stuff of clay
the salt of the earth
Marked by the cross
the name of the Christ
ashes on our heads
and his name on our hearts
Defining us by his walk
our shepherd before us
called to love the world
and to forgive our neighbors
Hard to do in the dog-eat-dog
the Horatio Alger world
but easier when we remember
God’s loving word
We are unable
to redeem ourselves to God
needing the sacrifice of Christ
his blood poured on the cross
We must be mindful
needing his grace
sharing the light of Christ
to the ends of the earth

Happy in My Dust
Going forward
to receive the ashes
humble in my spirit
but feeling your love
Happy in my dust
contemplating my past
knowing you are with me
in the stormy blast
Taking on my sin
the stain upon you
redeeming me by your blood
changing my life in you
Able to stand
only because of your grace
able to stand before God
to see his heavenly face
Needing you with me
to rise above the dust
to walk in your light
carrying Christ into the world
making the darkness bright

Praise in Our Ashes
Joy in our clay
praise in our ashes
reminded of our failings
and of your perfection
Happy in repentance
in the arms of your grace
feeling love within us
in the light of your face
Washing over us
cascades of redemption
the living waters of creation
now rivers of salvation
God giving us anew
in this season of reflection
an opportunity for connection
communion with our Lord
Walking more closely
cleaving to our Savior
guided by the Spirit
out into the world

Ashes on Me
Looking down
aware of my clay
my sin, my failings
stumbling every day
Wanting to be worthy
knowing I am dust
marked with ashes
to remember
He went to the cross

Introspection
Looking inward
looking within
aware of his suffering
because of my sin
Failing to follow
to obey your commands
my Savior dying
because of my hands
My life over
my life turned around
coming to my Savior
lifting me from the ground
Aware of his suffering
his dying for me
praying to be worthy
though his grace sets me free

Drench Me in Grace
Fill me Lord
when I am low
raise me up
teach me where to go
Guide my feet
drench me with grace
offering love
a loving embrace
Give me words
gifts to share
lead me on
offering care
Renew my heart
that I may forgive
letting go of hurt
that I may truly live
Drench me in grace
soaked by your love
fill my cup
that I may be poured out
Open to your leading
living in my heart
show me the way
and I will do my part

Wash Me in Grace
Wash me in grace
that I may be renewed
fill me with love
that I am imbued
Show me your grace
going to the cross
teach me to live
whatever the cost
Let me be love
pouring out of me
yoked beside you
that I would be free
Needing your presence
to even begin to live
fill me completely
that I may give
All I am to you
offering up your love
feeling you on me
touched by the dove
Going out to spread the news
He is the risen Lord
not by what we do
by grace is our reward

Soak Me in Love
Every bit of my being
in every fiber
soak me in love
the source of all strength
Teach me to live
to walk in your grace
guide me home
that I may see your face
Oh God, my Savior
the ruler of my life
show me the way
to bring others into life
Wash me clean
give me a pure heart
that I may be filled
that I may be poured out
in every fiber
soak me in love
the source of all strength
Teach me to live
to walk in your grace
guide me home
that I may see your face
Oh God, my Savior
the ruler of my life
show me the way
to bring others into life
Wash me clean
give me a pure heart
that I may be filled
that I may be poured out
