Fasting

Fasting, self-denial
giving up distractions
things of this world
getting in the way

Time freed from things
to do’s and eating
spending time instead
sitting with our Father

Our lives changed
if we conform to this season
letting Lent wrap around us
warm in the embrace of God

Giving up little things
to gather at his feet
to feel the saints with us
offering so much to teach

Listening in these moments
reclaimed from other things
in fasting and self-denial
drawing closer to God
