February Heat

Broad smile
in my soul
as parka was replaced
with a polo
And white on white
with greens and garish

A wall of heat
for my thickened
Yankee blood.

Sweat down my back
stuck to the streetcar,
though not Desire.

Canal and Decatur
and Bourbon again.
Memories rushed
back of earlier visits

Oh to stay,
to bask in the February heat.

Nice Tie
partially non-verbal conversation with Richard Payne
of Preservation Hall Jazz Band
at Preservation Hall Jazz Band club
726 St. Peters Street
New Orleans, LA
He was the bass player for the band and
he was the bass player in
“Toots Sweet’s Band” in the movie
Angel Heart (1987).
I gave him my tie, right off my neck
(a tie I had bought from a pushcart at
Downtown Crossing in Boston).

Builder

I could have been an architect
easel and pad,
compass and straight edge
vision and design
at least that’s what
childhood photos show

Pride of the builder
for the precision, the challenge
whether blocks, Lincoln Logs, or
Legos (before the wheels were added to the box)

Laugh now at the smile reflected back
Form without knowledge of function
but part of the joy of this child
when I could get lost in the simple pleasures
of play, on my schedule
when time had less meaning
and you just did it when you wanted to.

Friend

What does it mean
that his first friend
was an imaginary friend?

How did that fact shape his world
and frame mine too?
Lives inside ones head
Making the sub corp,
Guppy Class, easy duty

Slow to share feelings
as was his generation
A meticulous man
using hands and spatial geometry
with ease, to create and fix

An organized shop, with pegboard to match
Night classes and juggling bills
on white lined pads and Ticonderoga #3

Strange to reflect, as time marches on
of the lessons, meaning, consequences
That his first friend
Was inside his head.
