we are loved and forgiven

in Christ, in no other,
not by our works,
only by his grace
we are loved and forgiven
raised from the dust
given new life, new hope
a new mission in Christ
we are raised for a purpose
holy, unto God
given a charge, a commission
to go out into the world

The light had come into the world

The light of the world
the hope of all nations
the light had come into the world
but we wouldn’t see it
we loved the darkness
the glut of our sin
the false hope, false promise
away from our king

We killed the light

Holding onto the shadows
our evil, our sin
we killed the light
or so it would seem
Christ dead,
taken from the cross
buried in the grave
the hollowness of Saturday
sorrow on the land

People love the shadows

The saw the light
but they were not joyful
refusing to abandon
their sinful ways
The light here with us
but rejected, reviled
people love the shadows
more than the light

If we humbly come to him
as did the thief on the cross
Christ will greet us warmly
no matter the cost
He will accept us
any who come to him
he will never drive them from him

silent before his accusers

Their verdict a foregone conclusion
by their actions, by prophecy
Christ silent before his accusers
choosing the cross for me
He was silent in the Temple
not challenging the false court
knowing all of this was part of God’s plan
humbly going to the cross

In the gathering shadows - 2

In the upper room, foreboding
the movement of Judas
the word of Christ
what he had spoken to us

In the mist of the garden
Gethsemane that night
the chaos, the maelstrom
Christ gathered in the storm

In the gathering shadows
the haunting of the day
hearing the verdict
the judgment of man

In the darkness at midday
Christ hanging on the cross
suffering and dying
redeeming us from the lost

Wine forever bitter, sweeter – v2

Christ’s words ringing, present in my heart
recounting his Passion story
the words, the cross, the weight
tearing of my heart
Wine forever bitter, sweeter
knowing the awful cost, his sacrifice
Bread forever pungent, richer
Forever changed from that moment,
by the power of these words hanging in the air
the dusty space, closed in, in the upper room
The words imprinted within them, within us
his choice, his sacrifice, as the betrayer fled them
while evil stalked that night, presence
These words of Jesus, to remember
what he was about to suffer, his path in this life
choosing the gate of the cross, our path to paradise
They could never eat bread the same way again
we too, if we truly listen, if we can picture what we have done
they could never drink wine without remembering
these fateful words he spoke, changing
the upper room echoing, haunting them,
walking changed in this life, yet with a purpose
The bread his body, the wine his blood
poured out as a blessing, our sacrifice
God’s mercy, His prayer for them, for all of us
That we would believe, that we would remember
that each time we break the bread, joined together
each time the cup is raised, in love, in fellowship
remembering Christ’s sacrifice, God’s love for us
Going to the cross, holding nothing back,
giving his all, all he was, dying for all of us

The Ashes and the Cup – v2

Wednesday’s ashes and Maundy’s cup
Sunday’s palms and Thursday’s basin
anchors of this season
to this most Holy Week
moments of Christ’s life,
Holy, for a purpose,
before the cross, the nails,
symbols of this walk
of our shared Lenten journey

Father, Forgive Them – v2

A prayer for the Roman soldiers
Gentiles, outside his faith
unaware, children, unsure
of his power, his might

The Messiah before them
dying on that day
on the cross, salvation
out of God’s grace

Father, forgive them
this was Christ’s prayer
to lift up the nations
all those unaware

A prayer for another people
not the people of the book
a transfer of allegiance
to those who would follow his word

From the lips of the victor – v2

Christ’s battle cry, his shout
from the lips of the victor
that all was completed
finished on the cross

His work of salvation
by his sacrifice that day
finished, completed,
before the grave

We are redeemed
God’s act of love finished
accomplished, eternal
victory is won

The Light Going Out

The sanctuary still, quiet
no joy, only sorrow
the lights not turned on
the altar remaining shrouded
The night before still heavy
as each scripture was read,
breathed aloud,
the Light going out
with each word, in turn

Taking Mary Into His Home

Not her son by blood
save for the blood of Jesus
an adoption at the cross
the will of the Savior

Taking Mary into his home
a new son, first position,
one who could care for her needs
both physical and spiritual

Hope in God - 3

Though bright sun outside
a remembering of that darkness
that first Saturday dawning
after the pain of Friday

The emptiness, the joining
the shared sense of grieving
Christ’s body in the tomb
his spirit descending

Hope in God
his caring, deliverance
victory in the darkest times
for we are his people

Hope for a miracle
the promise to be fulfilled
Victory in Jesus
the one righteous stone

In the Darkening Shadows

In silence entering
in silence departing
perhaps breathing slower, heavier
the weight of our sorrow
in bit by bit, the light
God’s light being extinguished
there in the telling
the weight of Christ’s Passion

delivered from sin and death

Do we understate the cruelty

We speak of them as nails
what held to the cross
do we understate man’s cruelty
by naming them as this

More like spikes
that which would be strong enough
something that holds railroad ties
for the weight of a human life

The thought of spikes, not nails
driven into Jesus
the mall, the club, the hammer
nailing him to the tree

Not so dainty, brutal,
these three nails that held him
hanging from the cross
at the place of the skull

The Light will be snuffed out

Did the leaders feel victory
having dispatched Jesus
the light snuffed out
yet at such a great cost
the curtain ripped in two
Christ in a cold tomb
the Romans at the gate
evil stalking the night
seemingly victories
the Light had been snuffed out

I have set you an example

My words to you holy
how you are to love
to love as I have loved
how I love you now

This water for cleansing
but this act for your care
ever being a servant
you will find comfort there

I have become a servant
and no servant is greater than their master
go and do likewise
being my presence in this world

Almost Easter

The journey not over
yet almost Easter
joy that we know
the Messiah would rise again
up from those waters
the pit, from Sheol
rising to walk with us
on that Easter morn.

Entering the Upper Room

The pace slowing further
the climax fast at hand
entering the pivotal moments
entering the upper room

Christ showing them an example
how we are to love each other
our Master becoming our servant
bowing to wash our feet

The week shrouded in darkness

A shadow on the steps
the way from the palms
the basin, the chalice
shrouded in darkness
a muting of the colors
life soon to depart
the Lamb upon the cross

Suffering in darkness
the sun refusing to shine
the Son of God the sacrifice
crimson with our stain
a darkening of the colors
his blood pouring out
his life given for us

He was a man of sorrows

Wearing the thorns
the cross for us
He was a man of sorrows
every indignity poured out
covering his head
The cloak of our sorrows
worn upon his shoulders
ignored, despised by us
going to the cross

His pictures

Like a wake for a loved one
so is our altar
the sanctuary dimmed
light upon his cross
the palms of Sunday
ashes from the start
the basin and the pitcher
the platen and the cup
His pictures, symbols
icons of his life
his walk here with us;
The crown of thorns
and the cross

Calling Hours

Like going to a funeral
the wake, the calling hours
the family gathering
symbols of his life
Gathering in the darkness
on Good Friday, sanctuary
hearing the musings of Christ
his dying words to us

Darkness over the earth

The sun refusing to shine
a cloak of death
the righteous on the cross
darkness over the earth

God in heaven crying
Christ crying out
suffering for God’s judgment
the altar of the cross

The curtain rent asunder
ripped in two
Christ breathing his last in this life
returning unto You.

About the ninth hour (3pm)

About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

When Darkness fell over Jerusalem

God must have been crying
all of heaven above
God must turned his face
He could no longer watch
His only Son on the cross
paying our awful costs
returning home again

When Darkness fell over Jerusalem
the living Son of God
covered in our shroud, our shame
dying that we may live
according to God’s plan
The world became dark
the sun refused to shine

Christ breathed his last
the curtain of the Temple
torn by great force, ripped
no need for sacrifice
the debt fully paid
Safely in his father’s arms
in the highest heaven

Sermon, "One More Lesson", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Maundy Thursday, Suncook United Methodist Church, 4/5/2012

Maundy Thursday
April 5, 2012
Exodus 12:1-4, 11-14 NRSV Bible
1 Corinthians 11-23-26 NRSV Bible
John 13:1-17, 31b-35 NRSV Bible

One More Lesson. . .

We have almost come to the end of our Lenten journey together. It has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least. We have been to so many stops on the road. We now enter the upper room where Jesus taught His disciples then and now one of the most important lessons in His ministry. There was one last thing He needed to show them. . . example for them. . . before He completed His work on the cross. Jesus took something that they were taught as they grew up. . . the Pass Over Seder. . . and turned into something new. . . something different. They were taught that the Seder was a remembrance of how God delivered the Israelites from the tyranny of the Egyptians. Now this new thing was about remembering Jesus and His teachings. . . about remembering how Jesus acted and to go and do likewise.

At this Seder, Jesus did something that a teacher would never have done. Instead of having others wash His feet. . . instead of claiming the rights of one was above others. . . Jesus did a new thing. He was the one who washed the feet. Taking on the posture of a servant instead of being served, He taught the disciples and us to live a new way. . . one that puts others above our selves.

I can understand how Simon Peter felt. . . he knew who Jesus was. Peter understood that Jesus was special. Peter felt unworthy of Jesus washing his feet but Jesus told him that if He didn’t, Peter could have no part of what Jesus was doing. . . this new way of life.

(Read John 13 passage)

In taking on this new lifestyle. . . of a servant. . . Jesus also gave them and us a new commandment. To love others not as our self but as Jesus loved. To be willing to put aside self and take up theirs and our own cross and follow Jesus’ example.

We are called to live in a new and radical way. . . much different than the world around us as Jesus’ disciples. We are called to love unconditionally. We are called to serve others with the love and joy that Jesus did. We are called into the family business, as beloved children of the Most High God. We are called to be Christ to the world. Imagine what the world would be if we were more interested in the family business than branching out on our own? I wonder what would happen if humanity would return to its original form and walk in the cool of the evening with our God? I wonder what it would be like if you and I would unconditionally be the hands and feet of Christ? Just imagine.

Amen
