We speak of them as nails
what held to the cross
do we understate man’s cruelty
by naming them as this
More like spikes
that which would be strong enough
something that holds railroad ties
for the weight of a human life
The thought of spikes, not nails
driven into Jesus
the mall, the club, the hammer
nailing him to the tree
Not so dainty, brutal,
these three nails that held him
hanging from the cross
at the place of the skull
