the weight of my log

I long for a day
when I can confess
that I stop short when
I am too sure of myself
my voice fettered
humbled in part
my tongue hesitant
to speak too far,
too much

remembering the log
heavy, uncomfortable
the log in my eye
the weight of the log
reminding me, (I hope)
that the log in my eye
is larger, larger by far
than the speck (I think I see)
in my neighbor’s eye

how can I even be sure
that the speck is there
my vision obstructed
by the log which I know is there
the log so familiar,
familiar pain, heavy,
the log ever present
how can I judge them
while the log is in there

stones of the builder – v2

more than just tools,
lovingly held pieces
each of us stones of the builder
each part of the body
shards of color of the glazier
bricks and mortar
of the mason, the artisan,
preparing to make, to create
to build up the church
by His loving hand
an image revealed
for God’s holy purpose

designed long before
written in heaven
each a part to play
part of the body
of the church, of Christ
gifted for the holy work
to lift up the kingdom
witnesses of love
in many shapes and sizes
in bright colors, textures
all held together, one message,
to share with the world

Before the Guard – v2

Standing watch, proudly,
A large flag, the stars and stripes
hanging heavy, sad, the sun
through the thin, worn fabric
Hanging at half-staff
before the Guard, on the strip
reminding us of the loss on this date
so recently still, a part of our collective memory
our shared consciousness

A day, a moment, like that day in Dallas
always to be hallowed, remembered
by our people, this nation

A weathered flag in the late afternoon
fitting sentry before the National Guard;
so many out there today, still,
defending us in those dark places
in part because of this date
seven years at war, invisible enemy
(five more years now)

But our flag flies still, proudly,
to remember, the resolve of a nation too;
that terror would be avenged
our way of life would prevail
that our dream together
will never die from the world

One Flag, One God – v2

So often, in this world, cluttered, confused
allegiance to consumption, to things;
as if they are worthy;
not standing for anything.

Idols only, evil, keeping us from God;
but these words, “one nation under God”
different than the others, set apart;
a calling deep within our spirits
of the relationship with God
as a people, this prayer for our nation.

Not that we are special,
not that God carries our battles;
but that we, as a people,
would live by His commandments.

That our nation would live under His reign
that our dreams, our aspirations, our policies,
that our laws, our daily lives
would be pleasing to God

This is our prayer, this is our hope
especially on this day
remembering the words on the Declaration,
written on the page,
and the prayer within them
for this nation, one nation under God.

That We Would Be – v2

In the words we share
trying to be what we profess
wishing the nobler aspects
of our creed, our hope,
would guide our steps,
the actions of our leaders,
our nation in the world.

That we would be
“one nation under God”,
aware of our responsibilities
to those poorer, weaker,
under oppression and tyranny
that we would project love
more than power,
that we would be that light
shining in the world.

This love guiding our steps
These eyes watching what we do
acting as God’s children
serving our neighbor
sharing His grace in the world
walking humbly with our God
that we would cleave to Him
that we would be worthy of His name.

These words that we share
important, to us, to the nations
understanding that while we
are a secular country;
We stand on the rock
the one God eternal
maker of heaven and earth.

Fallen – v2

Standing in the cold
with those who knew you, truly,
those I know who wear the badge
who fight the fight you fought
Being there for all of us
in the streets, out in the darker places
the trying places in our land
our city, our neighborhoods

Knowing where you fell,
how close to our home
how near we all are to chaos
how separate we let ourselves be
when we are still so connected
Seeing you, your flag
the fallen one
echoes of your life

Watching your comrades,
your brethren, my own brother
the thin blue line, stretching down the street
past the station in front of me,
row on row of men and women
on and on they came
to pay respect, tribute, honor
to your memory

A tribute, to stand with each one of them
Those who risk all for us
each day, each shift,
each step on the beat,
into the breach
Dark places where
we would
not go

Every Flag – v2

Every flag, every flag
all around our state
in the driving we did
on this special day

Every flag flying,
none of the poles empty,
yet every flag flying
at only half staff

None of us had to ask
why they flew this way;
none of us will ever forget
what happened on this day.

Raising the Colors – v3

Running to court, a quick filing
before racing to the office,
a swallow of coffee, gathering papers
another case, urgent, important
another hearing, another court
the whirlwind, so familiar

Between these, the motion of the day,
Stopping, pausing, watching
Standing still, reverent
waiting in these moments
the raising of the colors
before the courthouse

A moment of reflection
of America, of sacrifice
what the flag really means
caught in the bright morning sun
Time standing still;
Grateful for where I stand

The Banner of Freedom – v3

Talks of more war
Of another mission
In some foreign land
Our military stretched thinner

The colors of our country
How proudly they wave
So much sacrifice
The price to this day

Our nation’s ideals
For this it stands tall
That we would remember
The cost of freedom’s call

sharing my burden
the other truth of the yoke
lighter together

when we share this with Christ
giving a portion

lighter together

the dove of the Spirit

buoyed within me
the Spirit within me
steeled for the challenge

dust of the earth – v2

even dirt important
in the hand of God
dust of the earth
dry inert soil
given life
for God’s purpose
water of the Savior
the hands of the Creator
the breath of the Spirit
giving life

tools of the Maker
in the hands of the Potter
the dust of the earth
understanding creation
how God created
we are the hands and feet
the servants now
our minds the tools
making a better world
continuing creation
