Sausage – v5

A short tale of whimsy, a trifle,
a bit of confection, of spice
Forget the frank, the hot dog -
Give me the Fenway sausage.
Lansdowne or Yawkey, just give me the street,
the crowds, the carts, the smells.
Sausage you shrug, you, the reader,
of this trifle, this whimsy -
 
What do I mean, me the storyteller?
Read on, won’t you please.
 
Sliced bell peppers and big chunks of onions
gathered, lathered, on the fresh bun,
they tempt the palate, tease the tongue,
open wide the bun and spread hot mustard
set the stage, the moment, for the star…
the scorched and blackened piece of meat
reminds me of every sausage, each one,
I have eaten before.
 
So much memory, in the tastes,
treasure beyond measure, of family and fun
of ballgames, tailgates, and the carnie;
a cacophony of moments
dripping with that same grease.
Do you smell it too, sizzling,
on the smoky hot grill?
 
My lips curl with a smirk
as I write these lines for you,
as I laugh to myself, again,
of the pleasures of excess
and the lusty gluttony
of eating. . . another one.

Sausage - v5

A short tale of whimsy, a trifle,

a bit of confection, of spice,

Forget the frank, the hot dog - 

Give me the Fenway sausage.

Lansdowne or Yawkey, just give me the street, 

the crowds, the carts, the smells.

Sausage you shrug, you, the reader,

of this trifle, this whimsy - 

What do I mean, me the storyteller?

Read on, won’t you please.

Father and son together,
Playing for the same team,
The company logo on their chests,
One with the American pastime…
 
Stitching our history together,
The ties that bind us,
Lost to so many now,
But how we played as one…
 
A thread line connecting,
Tying us as one, one nation,
Our national pastime, baseball,

Moments in history fondly remembered,
Milestones of our pastime, the game,
That we all love that we cherish,
Ties that bind us, that stitch us together,
Remembering the rivalries, the games,
Little moments, held onto, debated,
Around the table, in front of the TV…
 
Was he safe or out, who was the greatest,
The GOAT, the best, how we live or die,
On the hill that we climb on, that we scale,
The pinnacles and the valleys, heartaches,
What is, what might have been,
Waiting till next year, maybe,
Or standing on the mountaintops…

Could it really be happening,
his line shot to the corner,
the game, the World Series on the line,
late inning heroics, it all came to this,
To this moment, to this one hit…
 
A crack of the bat, excitement,
everyone rising to their feet,
a whole nation joining with him,
jumping, praying, pushing, waving,
Willing the ball Fair...
 
Jubilation, exaltation,
rising to crescendo,
happiness in this moment,
jumping for joy, leaping, our hero,
Around the bases, oh how He ran…

Learning to Swing – v2 #TedWilliams #RedSox #baseball #MLB

I still remember playing catch with Dad,
out in our back yard, between the pine and fir trees,
the old first basemen’s glove of my father,
wanting to be like a Red Sox, our heroes,
Giving up Wonder, eating Yaz Bread religiously,
as if that would make them win,
the Impossible Dream, their games,
baseball cards clickety clacking on our bicycle tires.
 
In the pantheon of our heroes,
one name stood out, higher,
the epitome of hitting, of perfection,
Ted Williams and Sears Roebuck,
a match made in marketing heaven,
before computers, a giant catalog,
full showrooms, our eyes all agog.
 
A baseball bat, a ball, a glove,
with his name emblazoned upon them,
oiled just so (according to instructions),
a booklet to be studied, to measure up,
a record with his voice, teaching us how to hit,
Learning to Swing, as Ted did, his science, his art,
All of us future Red Sox, (like Pudge, like Jerry)
Growing up in their shadows…

Learning to Swing #RedSox #TedWilliams

I remember playing catch with dad,

Those in the pantheon, our heroes,
Those in the Hall of Fame,
Standing together, smiling,
Watching you hitting,
Before the season began.
 
So much history, perspective,
So much potential, talent,
A career burgeoning,
So much promise, palpable,
Getting ready to explode.
 
They could testify, proclaim,
What they were seeing,
Watching you hitting,
Getting warmed up,
Before the season began.
