Apricot and Periwinkle – v2

Apricot and periwinkle
Robin’s egg and salmon.
Moments, seconds, of
Yesterday’s sunset
Frozen in my mind
Captured forever.

No Nikon or Kodak,
No disposable or instamatic.
Images captured on
Rods and cones this time,
Not on emulsion.
Fine grained
And enduring.
Synapses growing.

Soft shadows
And wispy clouds.
Bands of color and mood
Share the sky
With small birds
And a damselfly,
Before the dark.

Stars create a canopy
After the light fails.
The sunset now
A part of my
Memory.
To cherish
forever.

An Individual Sarcophagus of Snow – v2

Entombed in the driveway
Like whales beached on the sand
covered in the dunes, the drifts
each car, like an archaeological dig
ancient Egypt, layers to cut through
a treasure discovered
found buried alive
as if forgotten by time
an individual sarcophagus of snow
the layer of sand, of time
pushed away, carefully, gently
markings of make, model
vanity plates, some kind of code
all giving way, slowly,
to the shovel, the brush
the rays of the sun, warming,
falling on the part of the world
melting the snow of yesterday’s storm
exposing the bodies, lying, waiting,
from inside the sarcophagi of snow

A Thread in the Web – v2

Not separate, alone
each of us woven
a thread in the web
connected to all life
from the beginning

All of creation
part of the same order
all of us connected
the universe, the world
all part of God’s plan

The rules of the cosmos
the intricate design
all woven together
into the Creator’s
web of life

A Soul Set Free – v2

A new and perfect body
has entered into paradise
a soul has left this struggle
and entered eternal rest

A life has ceases its moral beating
and heaven has gained a saint
for soul has been set free
and has joined eternity

A Silent Squadron – v2

A formation of geese
coming out of the fog
flying low over the playground
silently flying, hushed,
seemingly without effort
hand signals not honking
to savor the stillness
the world encased in fog
as if preserved in ice

A Rain of Color – v2

A rain of color, the leaves of the maples,
different kinds, red, sugar, swamp,
all torquing, canting, twisting,
inexorably, falling
to the warming, the change
the frost and the sun, conspiring
to create a dance of leaves
meandering, lingering in the still air
not so much a fall as a dance to earth
each a balsa glider,
caught on thermals, on breezes
wet leaves, clear crisp morning
a bright sky, polarized light
a rain of red, yellow, orange,
a remnant of green,
showering down from heaven

a piece of himself – v2

unable to find the words
the truth of God’s love
putting a piece of himself
within us, His breath,
His spark, His mark
His Spirit within us
part of the Creator, the universe
captured and placed
within us, in our cells
in our lives, to be shared
crying out, calling, urging,
reaching others, the piece of God
within them too

Though the fig tree does not bud

A Field of Ferns – v2

Above the bluff, the scar,
the clear-cut of the power lines,
where the deer come to graze
a forest of pine opens
to the north, an expanse
Surrounded by conifers,
a field of ferns, rising on sturdy
erect stalks, broad leaves
to drink the shafts of light
falling briefly, through the canopy
The tall mast pines, straight and true
red-brown needles, a carpet between
the ferns, the regal trees, an evenness
of surface, a short pile rug
across the whole expanse;
Green ferns, red-brown needles,
green-brown trunks, bright green needles
above, reaching to blue sky
the arc of the dome.

A Cup of Berries – v2

Hand-picked, small
blackberries
each one fully-ripe,
cool in the take-out coffee cup,
sitting in the dark fridge.

Open and inviting,
calling me to pick,
crimson stain on my fingers
ripe berry past my lips

August fruit,
ripe summer fruit
kept from spoiling,
enticing me again
to reach in for more.

you harvest what you sow – v2

sow your seeds wisely
walking on the earth
scatter your seeds richly
a harvest for God

sow to the Spirit
not to the world
sow wisely all of you
sow to the Lord

sow seeds carefully
you harvest what you sow.
if you sow to the flesh
you will harvest thorns.
