you live too far away

When I think of you, our friendship
so deep, so rich in the moments,
when we saw each other daily,
shared a lunch, or a pint at the pub
I think, you live too far away
unable to transit the miles, the ocean
the great space between us
Wondering how your life has changed
what you have seen, experienced
back closer to home,
where you path has lead you
what mountains you have climbed
Here I am in my safe wonderful world
I wonder about the demons you face
in the work you do, memories you
are forced to face
so far away,
questions I cannot ask

Turning While Parked

The car, sport utility vehicle,
an amber flash of light, staccato,
turning left, while parked
engine off, flashing left
wipers on in the parking lot
pushing the constant late-April showers
no one in the car
I wonder what they were doing
to race into the store
turning while parked
I hope the curb gets out of the way

Shopping While Hungry

Yup, I did it again;
went shopping while hungry
I even stood at the deli counter,
contemplating whether or not
I should buy a bit, a taste
of Lebanon bologna and liverwurst,
maybe a bit of strong swiss,
a slice or two of dark pumpernickel
a pickle from a barrel
But I didn’t buy those,
for only I would eat them
or so I would guess
A salad would suffice,
rich, bright tastes,
dancing together
soon on my tongue,
after I finish these lines
Oh I went shopping hungry
and the bill was a bit larger;
but I got what I wanted,
not just what was on the list

A Swimmer’s Hump

His most defining feature
a swimmer’s hump
years of the butterfly
practice after practice
supple muscle, an arch to his back
long after he left the water

A Flock of Turkeys

Up on the ridge line
the farthest part of the hill
a flock of turkeys
eating in the grass
Out of place,
in the city, unexpected
Wild things, outside
the urban jungle
catching my eye,
my attention driving along

For Affect Alone

He took a quick puff
as he walked along
headphones on, a quick puff
not really breathing in
for affect alone
the cigarette hung by his side
a foreign element, out of place
incongruous, trying to look cool
for affect alone

Life Without Limbs - update (first post 7/8/07) - on 20/20

I received the following email yesterday. I hope to watch, and I encourage you to also. See more on Nick at - http://www.lifewithoutllimbs.org/.

"Hello Friend, Nick Vujicic here!

Several days ago ABC’s 20/20 program interviewed me at my home here in Southern California. What a remarkable opportunity to share about Life Without Limb’s ministry and the impact that we are having upon thousands throughout the United States and the world!

The 20/20 broadcast will air this Friday, March 28th at 9:00pm PST/EST. (Check your local listings)

It is my greatest desire to faithfully share the life-changing, obstacle-overcoming, gospel message with as many people as I can. As a man with no arms or legs, my very testimony breaks down barriers to express the hope that can be found only in Jesus Christ.

The country of the United States needs this hope right now! Would you pray with me that God will use the 20/20 interview to stir up souls for the Kingdom? This is my first national interview on American television and the questions of the interviewer guided the conversation continually back to hope in Christ.

Here are some ways we can work together to make the most of this incredible opportunity:

1. Please pray that God will use the 20/20 interview to awaken souls to Him.

2. Please forward this e-mail to all of your friends.I am looking forward to hearing from you in the days to come.

May our Lord bless you and ignite His will in your life today!

In His service,

Nick Vujicic &
The LifeWithoutLimbs Team"

Egg with Your Oxford

Omelet of egg, on the plate
on the fork, into his mouth,
not that last time
and it tasted so good . . .
and, no one was around
to see him break
the five-second rule
But, where was the egg?
Not on the dirty floor,
the plate, even his lap.
Nestled in the folds,
dripping ketchup,
at the bottom,
of the breast pocket,
of his dress oxford.
And the fork found it there
and into his mouth, finally,
Mmmm. Screw the five-second rule;
It was good.

Weather Poetry - by one of the WMUR Meteorologists

Printed off the WMUR website (http://www.wmur.com/weather/index.html) 12/15/07 at 15:35

“A Sloppy Sunday Storm!
A major winter storm has marked New Hampshire for its path of wint’ry weather Sunday. Unlike Thursday’s storm, Arctic air will not be able to hold the day completely, and a mélange of nasty weather parfait will fall across the Granite State.”

Ruby Slippers

A pair of ruby slippers
sequined and well-worn
Old friends gingerly placed,
lovingly left for another day

I don’t know their owner;
but I have seen the smiles, the glee
I can imagine, from my own princesses
and their joy in dress-up
time when their wonder, magic
rubs off on me

Oh, I can imagine her so well
and the giggles that erupt
each time she slips them back on

Babushka

She was walking on the sidewalk
just around the corner from home,
from her place here is the city
so much a woman of her place
her piece of history, in the old country
She was of that greatest generation
if that is what they call it in Budapest,
or Warsaw, or Moskva.
Scarf pulled tight against the familiar wind
apron tied, over the heavy dress
head down, watching her steps
thick sturdy shoes, a shuffling gait
an old worn coat
Living in the neighborhood
within the bubble of family and language

Black Velour

He sat quietly, patiently it seemed
wrapped in black velour
new purchase, or at least well maintained
Sitting, up on the box from his shopping
A sweat suit that never saw exercise
velour beret perched on his brow
covering his thinning hair
Waiting on the grassy margin
of the parking lot
What was he waiting for,
where was he going
wrapped in black velour
against the November cold

exploding neural pathways

random connection to long forgotten facts
scraps of thoughts deep within my consciousness
triggered by a word, a conversation,
music, talk on the radio,
the gust of wind this morning on the walk to school
with the girls, the whiff of smoke of a fall fire
in the fireplace, the smell of coffee, of food baking
the feel of a bit of bark, of the wet grounds in the trash
each a means of exploding neural pathways
of sudden burst of thought, or energy
weaving together that which was hidden deep down
with the instant now, the unique moment in the present
tying something in my unconscious, to long ago
to see the relationship of something today
with some deeper meaning, awareness
grasp of thought

I came across the text string “exploding neural pathways”
randomly via Google at the site:

(Too Much Information !!*@!: Yes).
The poem above came from my own thoughts on that phrase

Wearing His Colors

I saw his head
coming through the crowd,
the throng of many colors.
A brightly colored, garish,
basketball as a hat, a wig,
a bold statement of loyalty, patriotism.
His country’s flag on his head,
his shirt, the tattoo on his arm.
Wearing his colors
for the world to see.
Go Brazil!

Cobble Stones

Streets of stone
irregular, throw your ankle
streets, side streets,
fun streets, where
hidden treasures lie
in the middle of the city,
the old port,
where fishermen,
where captains tread;
Ancient whaling port
with stories in the stone streets.

A Lucky Day

Three signs of completeness
holy perfection,
three sevens,
month, day, year
all aligned, all balances,
sevens across the board
What a wondrous moment
oh happy day
