unfamiliar neighbors

the story stretched
imparting compassion
expanding our vision
unfamiliar neighbors
our sisters and brothers
our focus, our purpose
to love those in need

The Emmaus Journey

the sad disciples
disillusioned, depressed
giving up hope
leaving the rest

leaving Jerusalem
on the road to Emmaus
going back home
not believing the resurrection

lost, unbelieving
weighed down by dust
only feeling pain
going to Emmaus

but not lost to Christ
walking there with him
revealed in the breaking
Christ as our host.

revitalized, recharged
touching by the living Christ
by his revealing, revelation
in the breaking of the bread

going back to Jerusalem
the brotherhood, the Way
into the Upper Room
joined by the Christ

Seeing Monet’s Lily Pads

A shimmering morning
captured in the rainstorm
the skin of the pond moving
a tympany of the droplets

A patina, ripples, reverberating
undulating, repeating
captured in the rainstorm

Seeing Monet’s lily pads
moving before my eyes
not a static painting
but a living tableau

A Challenge to Give

beholden to mammon
part of the earth
a challenge to give
to transform the world
more than we give now
not holding our stuff
to offer up to God
our treasures, ourselves

Glow

with the presence
the Holy Spirit within us
God’s direction upon me
Glow with God’s light
the Holy Spirit a fire
burning within me
lighting my way

grounded in prayer

only when our steps
our work, our path
grounded in prayer
only then fed
successful in God’s eye
a body of faith
grounded in prayer

A Conference of Prayer – v2

starting and ending
the beginning of worship
a conference of prayer
guiding our mission
our purpose forever
God’s will discerning
what we all should do

together we strive
a focus on discernment
God’s will informing
guiding our steps
slowing our breathing
our busy plans
becoming a conference
guided by prayer

Wanting to shout, NO!

In the memorial of the saints
stopping to remember their sacrifice, their service
sharing the names of our dead
both the clergy and laity
those who will greet us
on the day we enter Your kingdom

Including with these, with them,
congregations no more
hallowed ground now fallow
fields, nurseries ripped up,
abandoned, given back to time
closing doors of your church

Wanting to shout, NO!
when so many are yet lost
the fields white, ready for a harvest
our vision failing, too few to sow, to water
to tend the garden you have created;
feeling we have failed you, oh Lord.

on the road because they did not believe

Leaving Jerusalem, unfaithful
not believing the promise of Christ
the words of the women
of the empty tomb of Jesus;
only believing the victory of death
On the road, because they did not believe
walking toward home, in despair;
Rescued by the risen Christ
strangely warmed in the breaking of the bread
Christ’s life poured out for us
