Our lives, our actions
how we walk each day
informed by your Spirit
our help along the way
Streams, by not the spring
the upwelling of grace
giving by our Savior
the Lord, in his embrace
Seeking us first
from before our birth
longing for us
to turn and cleave to him
When we drink the water
abiding in his love
walking in the way
our lives truly begun

Participate in the Means of Grace
Work in our path
in our growing in faith
seeking ways to serve
to connect, to join
one another, with Lord
Participate in the means of grace
in the ways of God’s plan
in response, in love
to that which God alone gives
growing together
seeking life, eternal
our hope in the Lord

The Forgiveness of the Cross
Changed forever by your grace
the moment I believed
falling to my knees, overwhelmed
by the power of your love
Coming to realize
in the journey of my life
what your sacrifice means
the forgiveness of the cross
The power of life and death
the means of your grace
raising me from the dead
into your arms, oh God
Redeeming me utterly
the moment I believed
walking in your grace
for all eternity.

Suffering Love
Redeeming love
sacrificial love
the suffering love of Christ
choosing to go to the cross
to die in our place
Nothing we can say or do
to repay the price he paid
yet humbly responding
to his boundless grace
Wanting to follow
to walk in Christ’s ways
to live as a disciple
faithful all our days
He is our example
the perfection of sacrifice
his suffering love
bringing us to our knees
rising in his grace

Life’s Greatest Gift
Accepting God’s offer
submitting to God’s will
saying yes to God’s wooing
pursuing us still
Life’s greatest gift
relation with our Maker
our Savior, the Spirit
joined with our spirit
The breath of life abiding
the grace of God descending
like the cloud on the mountain
indwelling in us
Walking joyful
informed by the Spirit
going as we are led
within the Master’s plan
Doing our part
servants of the kingdom
going forth to witness
to the warmth of God’s grace
Changed forever
in a moment, yet a lifetime
journeying together

Poetry Where You Live.
The scriptures point to me
In the holy scriptures
as the Master said
God commissioned him
assigned him to the dead
To raise up the people
to bring us back to God
to share the holy message
our Savior, our Lord
So clearly He spoke
yet we refuse to believe
as He said to them,
the scriptures point to me

To Christ in the Dark
In silence, in the dark
seeking Christ
alone, in our room
seeking the Savior out
longing to hear his words
his message for our hearts
Yet like Nicodemus
sometimes the words are hard
wondering what Christ meant
in the calling to our hearts
what we are to discern
what is the Master’s plan
Praying for clarity
in the call from above
Feeling God’s leading
his calling to our heart
Wrapped in his love
drenched in his grace
We offer up our lives
for the warmth of his embrace

The Challenge of God’s Love
Each day, each hour
the challenge of God’s love
the call of God’s grace
to walk with you each day
ever in your ways
The transforming of your love
your sanctifying grace
the journey of my days
walking by your side
In your wondrous grace
seeking you always
journeying home each day
that I may see your face
Not so much a destination
as the journey on the way
steadfast in our faith
finishing the race

The Seeking Love of God
Like the perfume of cooking
wafting through the house
the seeking love of God
wooing after us
There before we are ready
ready for our awakening
sensing His presence

Thumbing his nose
showing the sole

Claiming cease-fire

For Peace in the Maghreb – v2
A prayer for peace
for the taste of true freedom
for peace in the Maghreb
for all its neighbors
for the whole region
The ancient lands
along the Mediterranean
once held by empires
still yearning to be free
wanting to speak
to raise their voices
Too long under
the boot of the depots
the tyrants, the strongmen
allowed to remain in power
by the rest of the world
Now is the time
yearning for freedom
cheered on by the nations
the people around the globe

Behind Your Closed Door
In the silence of your room
in time set apart
behind your closed door
that is the place to start
Falling to our knees
lifting our prayers up
emptying ourselves out
that God may fill us
knowing he hears us
and answers our petitions
if we would listen
to his voice speaking to us

lifting our prayers up
emptying ourselves out
that God may fill us
knowing he hears us
and answers our petitions
if we would listen
to his voice speaking to us

“Michelle and I join with millions of Christians
here and across the world to mark Ash Wednesday.
As we observe the season of Lent, we receive
with thanksgiving this opportunity for grace and repentance,
recommit ourselves to our faith, and
remember our obligations to one another.”

Unconscionable Cuts
Hurting our neighbors
our sisters and brothers
those crying out
given short shrift
Only a few seconds
to plead their cases
the line long
to argue for their lives
The services being cut
the programs eliminated
the advocates removed
who serve our neighbors
All of this coming
in times of trial
yet we are still wealth
safe in our beds
Where is the shared sacrifice
the honor to our burden
the responsibility of society
to aid those in need
What are we doing
to bear the burden
shifting the costs to others
who have no voices
Pushing the cuts down
onto our neighbors
blind to the pain
that we will cause them
Driving home
in the warmth of our possessions
surrounded by our wealth
do we still hear their cries
Don’t leave us
don’t desert us
don’t leave us
to die alone
Care for our neighbors
our sisters and brothers
this is a war
and we are on the wrong side

Simply Irresponsible
Failing to recognize
to honor our commitment
the obligation of society
at the base of the social contract
The governed to be served
by the elected officials
yet the least among us
not to be left behind
An unjust choice
hard-hearted and short-sighted
saving a few pennies
at the cost of their lives
The costs will come
multiplied in number
in tearing the fabric
of our threadbare safety net

An Immoral Choice - 2
Making them our sacrifice

defunding the programs

The Costs to Society
Something yet unseen
but the prophesies will come
the warnings that were spoken
the shadows of these cuts
The costs to society
of making these choices
cutting their services
on the altar of “no new taxes”
Sometime in the future
when the accounting comes
costs on their lives
and on their communities
who will stand before them
the children and the parents
who have borne this pain for us

With Their Families
The choice we are making
to defund the services
will cause lasting pain
will tear apart families
Many of these
the only hope for them
that their loved ones will live
with their families
that they will not be shipped away
to some state facility
at great cost
to these we are shifting
the burden that we share
to love our neighbors
to offer them care
this will be our legacy
if we continue on this path

Into Our Room
Not in public
raising shouts to the heavens
not in the streets
for show, for recognition
Seeking our Master
the Creator of all
going into our room
there he will hear us
the yearnings of our hearts
even when words do not come
the Savior will do his part
Hearing the musings
our needs lifted up
he will restore us
he will fill our cup

The Need is Greater
The need is greater
than what we have funded
long waiting lists
and unfunded mandates
Now in this cruel season
eliminating whole programs
the costs of these decisions
a judgment on our people
What will we say to them
the aged, the infirm
those counting on us
to stay warm in winter
What will we say
to the mother crying
when their child is torn from them
when society fails them
Who will answer
for the decisions being made
saving new taxes
at the cost of our neighbors
leaving them to sacrifice
bearing all the pain

In the Care of the State
The costs will be greater
though maybe not tomorrow
down into our future
when the costs are fully realized
The expedient decisions
to cut the services
the funding for the poor,
the aged and the disabled
In the care of the state
or in the cold grave
these may be the consequences
when they come of age
The decisions short-sighted
ripping them apart
the families brutalized
in the cuts to their hearts
In the future we will see
the measure of our compassion
as our neighbors die alone
as they cannot meet the mortgage
Some will take their lives
when the services are dried up
some will die in their houses
alone in the cold of winter
The costs far higher
if we look into the future
the choices we are making
a judgment on us all

The Services They Need
Not something abstract
the people who came before you
crying out for assistance
for dignity each day
Crying for you to listen
for all of us to hear
to save them from the ax
for the lives they hold dear
The services they need
some to just survive
even if you make the cuts
the need will still exist
Somehow the pain will come
felt in many places
the costs of the short-sightedness
will tear us to pieces
The fabric being torn
the compassion of the people
set aside in trying times
to maintain our Advantage
Saving hard choices
to raise new taxes
by denying services
to the least among our people

Reconsider what you are doing
There is time yet
we can choose another
another path through the shadows
without hurting our neighbors
We should be better
in a state with such blessing
strength in community
and the riches of nature
So much better
we should strive to be
to find another way
than hurting you and me
Short-sighted savings
hurting our neighbors
those who depend on
us to be free
The innocents crying
praying you would listen
that you would find away
to save them from the cuts
We should all be willing
to make our own sacrifice
not putting our hands on them
and making them bear the cost

In the Place of Prayer
Deep in silence
musings, listening
in the place of prayer
we walk in God’s grace
growing in our faith
Feeling God’s love
his presence within us
a smile within our hearts
going as we are led
eager to do our part
In that place of prayer
that grounding, centering
finding our purpose
our part in his plan
In that growing faith
from our hearts going
believing in our calling
ready to share the word

musings, listening
in the place of prayer
we walk in God’s grace
growing in our faith
Feeling God’s love
his presence within us
a smile within our hearts
going as we are led
eager to do our part
In that place of prayer
that grounding, centering
finding our purpose
our part in his plan
In that growing faith
from our hearts going
believing in our calling
ready to share the word

Only Through Jesus
Our life, restored
redeemed from the pit
from the shadow rising
made whole, complete
Only through Jesus
through his pain and suffering
his obedience to the cross
his submission to God
By God’s love rising
on that Easter morning
in following him ever
we too may rise
Our faith in Jesus
in going as we are called
God’s purpose unfolding
when we give our all
Submitting to God
as did the Savior
falling to God’s will
rising in his arms
Servants going
only through Jesus
empowered to heal
the hearts of the world

restore the funding

“Michelle and I join with millions of Christians
here and across the world to mark Ash Wednesday.
As we observe the season of Lent, we receive
with thanksgiving this opportunity for grace and repentance,
recommit ourselves to our faith, and
remember our obligations to one another.”

Sharpened in the Silence
In the quiet of our spirits
living as worship
church in our hearts
a verb, not just a noun
Our faith growing
sharpened in silence
in the indwelling of the word
imbued within our hearts
Going like Christ did
in time set apart
leaving the world for a moment
to sense God in our heart
Sharpened,

Their Blood on Our Hands – part 2
The innocents will die
they may even take their own lives
some will die cold and alone
others may go to prison
Their blood will be on our hands

painful, cruel choices

what may come from this
cutting off their services
leading to pain and death

Their Blood on Our Hands – part 1
Turning our blind eyes
away from the crisis
the murder of the peoples
mercenaries and martyrs
Their blood on our hands
because we fail to act
empty rhetoric of diplomacy
when they are dying in the street
What will history say
the mass graves of the martyrs
when the world stood by
as they were slaughtered in the streets
Giving them over
letting them fight by themselves
claiming the rights to be free
yet leaving them to die alone
March 17, 2011
calling on President Obama and the world
to act in the Middle East, especially in Libya and Bahrain,
to stand with the people
yearning to breathe free
and not worrying about the results,
that it is always right to stand for basic human rights
&
on the transformations since the beginning of January -
all the protests in Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Oman,
Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Palestinian Territories, Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, etc.

Into the Teeth of the Lion
Into the teeth of the lion
into the fist of the madman
the world handing the innocents
over to the tyrant
The dead will cry out
the martyrs dying for freedom
the street by street carnage
at the feet of the nations
Too long silent,
very little action
words of support
hollow, as are these
Why won’t the world act
while they die in the desert
when we know the consequence
the surety of his vengeance
if we fail to come to their rescue
Freedom is a right
we have stood and said this
yet we stand by silent
as they die for their freedom
So many people
the dead crying out
the martyrs dying for freedom
wondering where we are
Into the teeth of the lion
the fist of the madman
history will mark these days
in the book of life and death

The Good Lord Has Kept Me
Oh in this morning
waking, knowing
the good Lord has kept me
wrapped in his loving arms
Just where I want to be
where I want to stay
heeding his message
and following his way
Speaking volumes
seeds in my heart
to share his message
that I would do my part
His love abiding
grace indwelling within
each step a journey
oh let me begin

Devastating
The cuts deep, cruel
devastating our people
shredding the net
there to protect them
holding them up
Falling to the ground
their lives broken
never to get up
if we cut the lines
they count on
merely to survive
March 16, 2011 and March 17, 2011

Constitutional Amendment proposed by Rep. Neal Kirk
