Freedom to Love

One of our greatest treasures
to be remembered all year long
the freedom of religion
to worship as we choose
a freedom to love as Christ did
to go about in the world

Our freedoms a double-edged sword
where there is love there is hate
our task as followers of Christ
to continue to do his work
offering love and salvation
to the ends of the earth

Freedom to Destroy

Our free will
our freedoms
a freedom to destroy
to tear down not lift up
if we are reckless
fail to remember
the consequences of our actions
the chaos we leave behind
when we are on emotion
and fail to consider our neighbor
as we walk upon the earth

Freedom to Hate

The dark side of our freedoms
of religion and speech
the power to lift up
and the power to hurt

Freedom to hate
to sow seeds of war
to curse our neighbor’s faith
that others may worship freely
on our native soil

A Pen for God

In my hand a pen
to share a message
to offer my gifts to God
to answer his calling

What I have in my hand
to give unto the Lord
not just this but this a start
a pen for the Lord

Written on His Staff

Each church will be given a chance
to speak a commitment of love
to offer their best for the world
to be written on his staff

To share with one another
our hope for our work
to help spread God’s message of love
to the ends of the earth

when we are out in the world
to conform us to your love

Hope in My Hand

What do we hold in our hand
he asked each loving heart
all of us gathered in worship
the words of God,
the pen in my hand
but hope is what I hold
in the palm of my hand
always to share the good news
the love of the lamb
who came and died that I may live
good news to spread to the ends of the earth
just as Christ commands

Gathered in the Upper Room - 2

Pausing in the congregation
remembering, ever,
He knew, he was fully aware
that which they/we could not comprehend
The sacrifice, his body
broken, fulfilling all scripture
the ancient words of the prophet
the lamb, his blood, given, poured out
on the lintels of our hearts
making them/us whole

Praying the Great Thanksgiving

Breathing the words of our faith
the liturgy of communion
not merely reading the words
but praying the Great Thanksgiving

The words coming alive
the win and the bread
the sacrifice of our Lord
urgent, real in our head

The suffering of the Lord
his choice to die for me
real in the pray this day
in the family of our faith

The cloud of witnesses
those on our journey
whom God has used
potters to our clay

shaping each of us
shaped through their hands
molding our clay

to God’s holy will

The Staff of God

Whatever our gifts
our sense of limitations
our doubts, our past
the staff of God
in our hands
his words on our lips
equipping us
for our calling
out into the world
to serve in his holy name
to offer hope,
the grace, the love of God
redeeming the whole human race

Through Me

A door,
let me be
Through me
let them know you
oh God, I pray
that the world would see
the image of my savior
in all I do, all I say in my life
that through me, in spite of me
others would know you
the steadfast love
the boundless mercy
the eternal grace
pouring out on us
all those on earth
that we would be redeemed
brought into your arms
humbly into your fold
under your strong arm
into the fortress
of our God and king

Every Flag

Every flag
all around our state
in the driving we did
on this special day

Every flag flying
none of the poles empty
yet every flag flying
at only half staff

None of us had to ask
why they flew this way
none of us will ever forget
what happened on this day

Go There

Reach out to them
to the others, strangers,
those we do not know
sheep in the world
maybe away from the flock
perhaps they are eager
seeking You as we are
wanting to know God
to be part of the good news
the change that can be
out into the world
if we would but go to them
where they are
messengers of God’s love
his servants in the world

Where we are not yet connected

So many places, so near to us
where we are not yet connected
where our voices have not been heard
bringing the message of Christ
the hope in the good news
the promise, the grace of God

Needing to be more courageous
to use what we have been given
to take up what is in our hands
and go out into the world
to reach our neighbors where they are
not only sitting in church

Outside

Beyond our walls
shouting out their names
places we have not gone
those we have not touched
where we have not shared
the healing message of Christ

Too timid to go
outside, into our world
so close to us, our neighbors
yet outside, beyond out doors
waiting for us still
to come and enter in

September 11

So mindful
present in my thoughts this morning
that transfixing moment
the towers falling
our gasps, holding our breath
not believing our eyes
how fast, shattering
the billows of the smoke
the roar of hell
consuming so much
in those moments of insanity
utter destruction
changing our nation
the world on that morning
carved into our memories
never to be forgotten
