As I woke this morning, I remembered
I
remembered that day, those precise moments
the
pain coming afresh, reliving, so clear, so vivid
when
I saw the twin towers, the innocent burning
our
lives never the same, different
a
shower of debris, the maw of the beast.
The
gasps, of each new person
coming
into the room, silent, crying
watching
the television, repeating,
seeing
the images, over and over
Feeling
the same ache as when I watched
the
Challenger explode in the sky.
So
much lost, so much pain,
We
watched, unsure, not understanding
tears
streaming down, helpless
Attacked
on our soil, numb in the repeating,
disbelieving,
even though seeing
as
the twin towers imploded.
I
remember the air in the lounge,
all
of us strangers, together
from
so many countries,
from
all around the world
the
small screen too big
showing
too vividly the pain.
The
people dying, attacked,
the
anguish, the towers hit, falling
plumes
of smoke, of flame, rising,
darkness
that morning, echoing still
friends,
new friends, in that room
who
had loved ones in New York.
One
beside me who knew people in the Pentagon,
at
that very moment, working, friends, colleagues;
a
family of different races, religions
form
many nations, from around the globe;
a
call on a cell phone, unanswered,
All
transfixed, sobbing, unable to move.
