The image so urgent
calling
me to come closer
drawing
me into the chaos
the
pain of that moment
when
the twin towers fell
Controlled
chaos
Sharp
angles, the loss,
Ripped
colors, stark;
Shapes
alternating,
Sharp
and subdued
Tragedy
and rage
Pulled
onto page, the message,
The
ink, the color, the anguish,
Within
a continuous line;
Mat
and frame

About the print show at Pierce Law by Aaron Brown of November 2003. He said the prints were about the events of 9/11/01, especially the twisted metal of the bombed buildings. They came months after the attack when he finally returned to print work after a lengthy hiatus when he wrote instead. His wife shared that they all came out in a burst of activity over a single week. Aaron would only get a few hours of sleep each night and was almost working round the clock in the studio. His activities were so frenetic and continuous that he left the paints out, and would merely spray them so they remained wet and fresh.

WORK BY NEW HAMPSHIRE
PRINTMAKER AARON BROWN ON DISPLAY AT FRANKLIN PIERCE LAW CENTER
CONCORD, NH -- The
work of printmaker Aaron T. Brown of Lyndeboro, NH is currently on exhibit at
Franklin Pierce Law Center, Two White St. The exhibit, which will be on view
through January 5, 2004, features 55 abstract prints, utilizing intaglio and
relief printing techniques.
A reception for the
artist will be held on Thursday, November 13, from
5:30 to 7:30 p.m..
The public is welcome to attend.
“I have been drawing
abstract shapes since I was a child,” says Brown. “The designs I cut today come
to me spontaneously in the moment, the same way my abstract drawings come to
me. The saw is my pen. Each plate cut is kind of a dance of shapes that relate
and interact with each other. My forms, to be sure, have been influenced by the
natural forms I see in nature, and in a less obvious way from my love of the
rhythm and balance I find in movement and music.”
A juried member of
the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, Brown created and cut complex
three-dimensional puzzles for 15 years. While working as a woodworker, he
studied intaglio printing at the Sharon Arts Center.
“I hand roll the ink
onto each shape of an individual plate, and reassemble them, before putting
them through the printing press, “ explains Brown. “The colors of course, add a whole new
dimension to the piece, and I generally do quite a bit of experimentation
before setting on a palette that inspires me. So it seems, I’ve come a full
circle.”
The exhibit is open
Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 5
pm. For exhibit hours during the holidays, please call ahead for information,
603/228-1541.
