each cut on the slicer,
a sizzle, a hiss, a murmur...
the whiz each incoming round,
before the concussion,
hitting the front-line position...
each receding tide
pulled by the moon...
 
the hiss of the meat
its cohesion releasing,
quickly cut for commerce...
bullets before striking the ground...
Every wave returning
pulled back into the ocean
with a similar sound wave...
 
the incongruity of awareness
minds reeling in attention
visualizing a susurration...
the common reverberations...
the oscillation, waves of sounds -
capturing my imagination,
a symmetry, connecting the dots...

The hiss of the meat
 
This poem was scribbled right after I cut some prosciutto
at the deli counter last night. (And I had thought about the sound
when I had cut different kinds of ham in the past).
The sound of the meat being cut immediately
reminded me of the sound of bullets before impact in Ukraine
and the sound of receding tides, the susurration over the sand...

A #dolphin in the world – v3

Trapped for this time, now, living,
a dolphin in the world, moving,
too pale for the sun, burning,
driven from the sea, the water
up onto the land, an alien,
living as a mortal, a human,
to walk this solid ground…
 
Drawn to the water by his spirit,
returning to the water’s edge,
feeling the pull of the tides, the waters,
standing on the shore, peering,
searching the water for movement,
looking for home, connection once more,
to what once was, what might have been,
to the mystery, the truth out there…

The earth in danger – v2

Floating, ticking time bombs,
broken down tankers, adrift,
environmental disasters
recklessly traveling, venturing
out on the high seas…
 
Russia is a terrorist state,
unthinking, unfeeling, reckless,
playing roulette with weather,
risking the whole planet, this earth,
for his lusts, for their greed…
 
The world must step up, change,
gathering for the challenge,
for this moment, the risks,
to seize Russia’s shadow fleet,
to bring them to port…

You create a thin space – v3

You create a thin space,
brushing at the edge of heaven,
a murmur, a prayer, a whisper,
coming as close as breath,
to the infinite, to our imagination,
to our journey here on earth.
 
You conjure magic, emotion,
opening a pathway, a doorway,
a channel for them to enter,
to descend, to traverse,
to sojourn here with us.
 
You create a thin space,
for ancestors, for others,
to smile, to bloom, to blossom,
to cross over, to linger, to dwell,
so that they might grace us for a moment,
but that moment ends far too soon…

You create a thin space, eternal,
thinner than parchment, gossamer,
brushing at the edge of heaven,
a murmur, a prayer, a whisper,
coming as close as breath,
to the infinite, to our imagination,
our walk, our living, our seconds,
to our journey here on earth…
 
You conjure magic, emotion,
more than we can imagine,
making a way through eternity,
the infinite where You dwell,
opening a pathway, a doorway,
a channel for them to enter,
to descend, to traverse,
to sojourn here with us…
 
You create a thin space,
a connection piercing the veil,
for the departed, our loved ones,
for our ancestors, for others,
to smile, to bloom, to blossom,
to cross over, to linger, to dwell,
so that they might grace us a moment,
but that moment ends far too soon…

Focus on the eternal – v4

We must ever look upward,
to the promise of heaven,
we must not be mired in clay,
on the worries of this earth…
 
All of this is dust, a breath,
an illusion, a delusion,
an artifice, a contrivance,
a fantasy, a myth, lies,
we tell, of our own making…
 
We must focus on the eternal,
to our rewards in heaven,
we must strive to live our lives,
in a way pleasing to God…
 
Nothing of the flesh,
of what we buy and pay for,
of the earth, of this life,
yes, all of this is dust,
to dust we shall return…
 
We must set down your idols,
our rewards in this life,
they are but of dust,
and to dust they will return…

Focus on the eternal,
To rewards in heaven,
Strive to live your life,
In a way pleasing to God…
 
Set down your idols,
Your rewards in this life,
They are but of dust,
And to dust they will return…

All of this is dust – v2

All of this is dust,

an illusion, a delusion,
an artifice, a contrivance,
a fantasy, a myth, lies,
of our own making…
 
Nothing of the flesh,
of what we buy and pay for,
of the earth, of this life,
yes, all of this is dust,
to dust we shall return…

Running with Grandpa – v2

Maybe two and a half,
certainly, no more than that,
running in the yard with grandpa,
going from flower to flower…
 
The mountain laurel,
giant rhododendron,
ground cover more at her height,
all of them sending her reeling,
in giggles of delight…
 
Drinking in the scents,
picking them in her imagination,
running from plant to plant,
too much for grandpa on the hot day,
happy to let her run by herself…
