the sound of the rustling
a storm of rain, a cascade
hundreds on hundreds
the turning of the pages
the service proceeding
each of us turning
the liturgy, the order
following the word
our worship unto God

So many rainbows
The weather outside threatening
(the storms not yet over)
brightening inside
so man rainbows
the room alive with colors
(promise through the pain,
after more rain)
Gathered here in worship
blessed by God’s grace

Is it to Teach Us to Love
God creating us different
a rainbow of faces
creating the others
setting us apart
but maybe all of this is planned
not our human choices
God creating the conflict, tensions
our struggles to love others
His plan unfolding
to live out Christ’s calling
to teach us to love
all of our neighbors,
sisters, and brothers
to love as Christ loves
all the people of earth

sitting on their hands
sitting in their chairs
their arms folded
stern expressions of disgust
not liking what they are hearing
others cheering
a standing ovation
their world, our past
beginning to crumble
unwelcome words
calling into question
their assumptions, their belief
the unfairness of our comfort

The failure of our faith
the failure of our faith
becoming complacent, too comfortable
losing our urgency, liberation
to go and change the world
becoming too soft, the oppressors
our beliefs diluted, watered down
messages conflicting
giving us a way
the hard words of Christ
with tradition, excuses
cast aside, unheeded
too comfortable in this life

becoming complacent, too comfortable
losing our urgency, liberation
to go and change the world
becoming too soft, the oppressors
our beliefs diluted, watered down
messages conflicting
giving us a way
the hard words of Christ
with tradition, excuses
cast aside, unheeded
too comfortable in this life

Jesus cleansing the Temple
sermon by Ziegler Award winner,
Reverend Gary Richards
http://www.newcovenant-umc.org/?q=content/meet-our-pastor
speaking of the Methodist Movement as a
Resistance Movement,
something that made some people very uncomfortable,
including one long-time Methodist who probably was thinking of John Wesley’s words, “Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can.”

were the wineskins burst
was the wine new
has the old now soured
the wine certainly different
were the wineskins burst
the Word prophetic before us
the one collected voice
of what happened there
the voice still speaking
calling yet to us
to dream a vision
a hope yet to come

the wind still blows
the flames of Pentecost
the fire of the Spirit
the wind still blows
bringing us salvation
the waters may surge
the boat of our lives tossed
but raise your sails, catch the wind

to serve as you are called
not fearing the tumult
the storms of life raging
safe within the Christ

bail together
when the wind moves the waves
when the waves surge over the gunnels
the water filling the boat
the struggles in this life
bail together, with your sister,
with your brother in this walk
serving ever faithful
the wind in your sails
the Holy Spirit leading
guiding your through the storm
the waters may be raging
but together safe from all harm

be part of the crew
in the boat with others
the Spirit filling our sails
moving on to perfection
trying to live out the Word
the boat may get swamped
the waves may crash in
better to be part of the crew

not standing with Christ
not serving at all

Mile Marker 19 – v2
I drove by the spot again
Today, this afternoon.
Where you lost control.
Where fate found you
Tired, and unprepared
For eternity to call you.
What went through your mind
That night in winter?
That split second of time.
Anger, surprise, fear
Or were you asleep
Unaware that the ice
Held your destiny?
That spot now different
the highway divided
crosses of other deaths
just off the shoulder
Do you sometimes check it out
do you ever look down
that place the ice came
and brought you to an end?
Today, this afternoon.
Where you lost control.
Where fate found you
Tired, and unprepared
For eternity to call you.
What went through your mind
That night in winter?
That split second of time.
Anger, surprise, fear
Or were you asleep
Unaware that the ice
Held your destiny?
That spot now different
the highway divided
crosses of other deaths
just off the shoulder
Do you sometimes check it out
do you ever look down
that place the ice came
and brought you to an end?

Living Water, the Stain of His Blood – v3
Our altar this morning draped,
fabric transformed, for his purpose
brightened by living water,
raining down from heaven
by the royal stain of His blood, crimson
vivid shimmering color, textured, flowing
in velvet, in taffeta,
beside the open bible,
below the brass cross, lighted candles
a foretaste, a mere hint of the grandeur,
the hem, the robe of the Creator,
filling Your temple with grace, with love
filling us with power
sent from above

raining down from heaven

Poetry Where You Live.
A Beat in Concord - v2
I was sitting there in the traffic, waiting for the light
the heat and humidity building in the van,
one window open to the moist air after the flooding
only there for a moment, in shadows
under the highway, waiting for the light
I saw a character, a caricature, a man out of time
on the sidewalk, under the underpass, half in shadow
He was a beat, a throwback, caught in time
not a Ginsberg, no he wouldn’t Howl,
a modern day Kerouac, or someone who aspired to be
It was his walk, his gait, his hair, his clothes
a slouched walk, bath sandals that had been worn outside too long
hunched shoulders, time spent in dim lit libraries,
before glowing computer screens, shaded lamps
an oversized blazer from the thrift store, elbows patched
over a frock prom shirt, frilled and with cranberry edging
I could sense the latte on his breath
smell of clove cigarettes in the wool of the coat
too warm for the day around him, swelter
a mop of coarse black hair
that hadn’t seen a brush in days
sunken eyes, and a certainty, a deep knowing
he’d written lines far darker than these
words that would confuse and provoke
unfairness of the mundane, inertia
bleakness of his bourgeois existence
unaware of his place, his role in the intelligentsia
A yawn at the coffee house, or maybe a demigod
reading the lines he might have written
hard to say across the street, as I was
driving by his path for those few brief seconds
before my light went green and I went on down the road
away from the college-aged, but no-longer-in-college beat
there, on the street in Concord

God mercifully sent us an Advocate
God knowing our sin
our struggle to be faithful
knowing how limited
we could understand Christ’s teaching
God mercifully sent us an Advocate
the Spirit now descended
landing upon us each bodily
indwelling within our own spirit

Alienation of sin
The alienation of our life
of our sin, estrangement
our distance from our goal
of walking right with God
Yet we are found worthy
redeemed by his Spirit
adopted by our God

Adoption of Grace
The alienation of sin
our estrangement from God
the cost of our lives
judgment from God
but we are brought back by Christ
the adoption of grace
brought to the cross
