The Trinity and You. . .

A reading from the Gospel of John, chapter 3, verses 1-17. I am reading from the Message Bible this morning. Listen for a Word from God. . .

Good morning. . . I have been enjoying the good weather we have been having and have spent a lot of time in the yard enjoying God’s splendor in creation. The birds have been even more glorious if that could happen in their songs of praise. The flowers are blooming in joyful song. The bees have been busy gathering nectar. Speaking of bees, have you ever noticed how children. . . or should I say a child. . . knows how to swarm. There is only one child but they seem to be swarming around you like a swarm of bees? One child can seem to be everywhere at once. I have more than once asked “are there more than one of you because it seems like there is?” It can tend to be exhausting for me at times. But. . . there is one thing that is One but made up of three that gives me peace Knowing that it is always there, ever present, ever watching, always close at hand, and that is our God. . . our “Three person” Creator.

Today, we, as Christians, are celebrate Trinity Sunday. . . we celebrate the Oneness of God. . . sort of the components that make up our Triune God. They are coequal in their importance. . . coexistent three in one, at all times. . . and coeternal in that they were there even in the beginning. We are what you call “Trinitarians” where as this is our doctrine of the Father, Son and Spirit. . . ok. . . theology lesson done. . .

You may be saying to yourself “Ok so that is great Pastor Ruth but what does that have to do with me and my walk with God? I know that God is three persons in one.” Well. . . the trinity has a lot to do with you and with me. It is how our faith is formed. . . let me explain. . .

In the three Scriptures that were read this morning, we heard about the three pieces or persons that make up the Trinity.

1. God the Son  (Gospel) In Jesus the Son, we have a rebirth. We are incorporated into the kingdom by rebirth. God the Son shares His eternal inheritance with us. We learn the truth about God through the Son.

2. God the Spirit  (Romans) the Spirit confirms we are a child of God. We through the Spirit we are able to go to the throne of grace and cry out “Abba Father”. . . by the way, Abba Father is translated “Daddy”. . . we can go to dad through the Spirit. God the Spirit leads us on and in our daily walk. . . our daily lives. We are reborn in and through the Spirit of God.

3. God the Father  (Isaiah) when we see and contemplate on God the Father and His glory we have seen in our lives. . . in the lives of other. . . in creation, we are inspired to worship. God the Father made us and we experience the love of God the Father through God the Son and God the Spirit.

We need all three pieces in our lives to be able to walk our journey of faith. Without all three there is an imbalance in the equation. It is an essential part of the Christian life. Without them our walk is like this tripod. When all three legs are working it is able to stand but take away one of the legs. . . it falls over.

Beloved child of the Triune God, how is our walk? Are we walking on all three legs or are you or I kind of limping along without all the pieces to help us walk upright? Is it time to extend all the legs of the tripod? Our God has a plan for you and for me but we need to have our legs extended in order to walk without of society for our aid. We need to believe in the power of the three in order to make us one in the Lord. Without that tripod in our life, we are not able to see through the lens of the camera of heaven. Let us extend our legs as we take the hand of our Creator God. . . Three is much better than one or two. With three we are able to stand against any storm life brings our way.

Amen!
