If by the Spirit

If by the flesh, we die
lost for all time
returning only to dust
God’s breath on high

If by the Spirit
by the calling of God
we put to death our past
and rise up to the light

Into God’s loving arms
at the end of this journey of night
like a butterfly soaring in flight
unbound by the earth below
