their shouts became cries

their shouts became cries
the climate changing;
the joy of Palm Sunday
became their cries of Good Friday.

their shouts of “Hosanna!”
of the triumphal entrance
the Messiah entering Jerusalem
before the Passover.

their cries of “Crucify Him!”
echoing on that Friday
the judgment on the people
resounding off the Stone Pavement.

their shouts of joy
became their cries of anger
the Messiah before them;
but they would not believe.

a veil of her sorrow – v9

the strands of gossamer
the web a fabric, pulled,
woven together
by an unknown artist

a covering, a veil
over the face of Jesus
a veil of her sorrow
her terrible suffering

looking down through the fabric
the web before her
staring down at Jesus
her first-born son

a veil of her sorrow – v8

the gauze of sadness
under strands of gossamer
woven together
forming a net,
a covering, a veil
a shroud over her vision

a veil of her sorrow
looking down,

through the fabric
the web before her
staring down at Christ

A fire aglow – v3

a blaze that does not consume
a light burning brightly
a fire aglow
yet a liquid
to be offered
to be poured

living fire of the Spirit
growing, spreading
when we empty ourselves,
a light, fire,
our vessels,
filled, poured,
burning everywhere

a veil of her sorrow – v7

a shroud over her vision
a burial cloth of grief
the strands of gossamer
woven together
a story of this moment
this day in her life

a covering, a veil
a veil of her sorrow
looking down
through the fabric
the web before Mary
staring down at Jesus

how she must have anguished
wishing this wasn’t happening
the weight of her son
heavy on her body
wished something had obscured
what she witnesses so clearly

The Growing Seed – v3

Faithful, though a mystery,
trusting in God
scattering seeds, love,
the Word of God, the story
the message of the Christ, of love
hope for eternity
for the whole world.

The growing seed,
the way of it unknown
day and night growing
where the seeds have been sown
growing within human hearts
in inexorable ways,
a harvest to come.

children sermon, "The Protection of the Trinity", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, March 22, 2015

Children’s message 03/22/2015
contemporaneous notes

5th Sunday in Lent

“The Protection of the Trinity””

-         Mystery Box – pocket knife, with three blades.
-         This knife reminds me of the Trinity
o   Father
o   Son
o   Holy Spirit

-         They work together
o   Holy Spirit inspires us to do good
o   Jesus saves us
o   God created us

-         A knife can protect us too
o   three choices of blades

-         We are protected by God
o   God created us
o   God’s Word protects us,
o   Showing us what to do and what not to do
-         We are protected by Jesus
o   Jesus protects us from sin
o   We are made righteous
o   He walks with us,
o   He goes before us
-         We are protected by the Holy Spirit
o   The Holy Spirit reminds us of god
o   We hear God’s voice
-         We know God will warn us to walk away from danger.

-         We can rely on the Trinity
o   God protects us
o   God is always with us
o   God will never leave us

-         Prayer

the plot to kill Jesus

seeing the peoples’ reaction
at this miracle of Jesus
under the nose of the leaders
of the priest of God’s people
the plot to kill Jesus
hatched within the Sanhedrin
after He raised Lazarus
from the world of the dead.

just beyond Bethphage
within a Sabbath’s walk
the home of Lazarus, his sisters,
in the town of Bethany
Christ’s greatest miracle
raising His friend from the dead
under the watchful eyes
of the Jews, the Temple,
the leaders of the people
proving He was a threat
