No Peace in the Quiet

For the disciples
that numbing silence
the quiet of the Sabbath
bringing them no peace

Christ, their master
the one they had followed
how could the Messiah
really have died on the cross

At this Hour

In the garden
at this hour
Christ praying for strength
though he was willing
his flesh weak,
seeking another way

Fully human
at this hour
though he is fully divine
struggling to be faithful
though he knew the pain to come
following the will of God
going the way of the cross

His Prayer Path

Not so much a place
the garden, Gethsemane
Christ walking in prayer
humbly following the Lord

Long before that night
his face set on Jerusalem
going though he knew the price
taking on all of our sin
that we would be redeemed

All of his prayers for this time
steeled to follow God’s will
the journey leading to the cross
forgiving us there even still

The Cup of Suffering

Christ alone in the garden
aware of what he faces
sorrow unbearable
to the point of death

Praying to the father
that this cup of suffering
would not come to his lips
finding another way

Yet in the garden choosing
submitting to the will of God
drinking of this cup;
Arise, the betrayer come.

the believers, the faithful

No talk of a vigil
waiting for his words
to come true
no story of his sheep
alone, without the Christ

A gap in the telling

a blank page

An uneasy Sabbath
not rest for the disciples

his light snuffed out

Suffering and Dying

Suffering and dying
going to the grave for my sin
seemingly forsaken by God
going to the dead
that we may rise with him

Dying with Christ
if we would serve in his name
going to the ends of the earth
with him to the grave

Rising with Christ
on that blessed morn
no longer bound by sin
free to rise with him

The Silence of Saturday

The week not yet finished
not yet the victory of Easter
the joy of our Sunday
when the Christ rose from the dead

The silence of Saturday
after the sorrow of the passion
the darkness in the garden
until his death upon the cross

Numbed, being present,
knowing our savior
suffered and died
and spent this day
in the tomb, the ground
descended to the death

Embracing His Passion

Only in walking where he stepped
traveling with Jesus
walking as a disciple with him
only in slowing our steps
to walk as he did that week
able to see all there is
this coming morning
to feel the joy in his victory

Embracing his passion
his way to the cross
from the crowds, the hosannas
through the story of his days
in the temple sharing
the upper room
and the garden
submitting to God’s will
setting his fate
in the hands of men

Only in the anguish
the realization of my sins
nailing Christ to the cross
only in being there on Golgotha
hearing his words
watching from a distance
letting my God
die on the tree

Joy tomorrow
oh yes, in the morning
sweet victory over death
all to come yet waiting still
slowing my steps
as he lay in the tomb

Living Now

Just as on that morning
the stone rolled away
Christ with us still
living now
as on that day

Our savior risen
in the present tense
walking with us
on this road of life

Gone before us
to prepare a place with him
yet walking with us
as we are yoked with him

Glory, hallelujah
and amen
Christ is risen
we are free, in him
victory over death!

Rose from the dead
a risen savior on high
forgiving us of our sin
setting us free, alive

Reading His Story

Over and over again
in the words of this week
the scripture so deeply
reading his story

The different players on the stage
each revealing themselves
responses to the Christ
God walking as a man
there in their midst

Some seeing him as a savior
others as a mighty king
a prophet, a shepherd
a teacher, healing in God’s name

Others a threat,
the worse kind of rebellion
leading the people
away from their faith
leading away from God

In the center, his quiet
save for overturning the scales
Christ in the center
calm in the storm
following the will of God

Even in the garden
in that moment of turmoil
submitting himself fully
choosing to lean on God

Going to the trials,
to the cross
climbing the altar in love
giving himself over
that we may live
fulfilling the promises of God

One Candle Remaining

After the others extinguished
the seven to match his words
his time on the cross
coming fast to a close

One candle remaining
the one lit all day
through our prayers and our silence
when we have cried so

The candle of Christ
blown out in silence
the light of the world cast out
buried in a tomb, in shadows
giving over to night

Done No Wrong

Even the lowly criminal
the thief upon the cross
rebuking his neighbor
when he mocked the Lord

Knowing he had done no wrong
the righteous yet condemned
his purity, innocence
evident to those who would see

To Be Crucified

Handed over by Pilate
appeasing the shouts of the crowd
handing the innocent
the lamb of God
over to be crucified

Mocked by the soldiers
a crown of thorns on his head
spat on and taunted
false praise and worship
bowing unrighteous at his feet

Not Believing His Words

There in their presence
Christ answering the charge
boldly proclaiming his identity
fulfilling all prophecy
the Messiah in their midst

Not believing his words
those holding the reins of power
not seeing the Christ
standing right before them

Calling the truth
the love of God blasphemy
that the one who have been foretold
had come to serve
not to be served
humbly before God

Into the Night

The blind disciples
scattering into the night
the shepherd captured
all the sheep lost
not knowing where to go

Deserting the master
running away
some denying they knew him
one yet who betrayed him

None stepping forward
hanging back, at a distance
afraid to speak to power
to save the Messiah
from his fate

The Hour Come

Christ confident,
waking the sleeping disciples
greeting the betrayer
and the guard who came to hold him
to bring him to the leaders
the elders of the people

The hour come
let us be going
no time to wait
now the creator’s plan to unfold

The Weakness of Flesh

The disciples with them
all but the betrayer
in the garden with our savior
sleeping while he prayed

Unable to stay awake
the weakness of the flesh
tired in the night
while Christ struggled
to stay faithful to the path

Unaware that the words
the time was at hand
that the betrayer was about to strike
giving Christ into their hands

Sleeping in Danger

In his time of trial
temptation to turn from the path
they were sleeping in danger
his all too human disciples
the night when the betrayer came
when evil stalked the garden
looking for the master
for a few small coins only
Christ was captured
in the shattered stillness of the night

His Sweat Like Blood

Like the blood of Abel
crying out from the earth
his sweat like blood
falling heavy to the ground

His agony, his struggle
faithfulness, though a man
knowing the pain, the suffering

A Stone’s Throw Beyond Them

Christ alone in his agony
alone, awake in the garden
just a stone’s throw beyond them
but a world away in cares

The weight of the decision
the master plan of God
his life for all humanity
drinking the cup of suffering

Sacrificing himself
humble as a servant
giving himself over to God
that we may see his face

In the Darkened Sanctuary

As the day gave way to night
sitting silently, each one
in the darkened sanctuary
prayerful, meditating
letting the world slip away

Centering on this day
The candles on the altar
those which would be extinguished in turn,
lit all together, a glowing congregation
as we entered in

Worshiping as a family
this day when Christ died
fulfilling his destiny
the lamb upon the cross

The candle of the Christ-child
the man upon the cross

The altar draped
in ashes and sackcloth
the lights dimmed
as the sky was that day

All of creation crying
mourning for the Lord
the Christ going to the cross
to pay for our disobedience
to reconcile us to God

The light of my master
the candle extinguished
dying there on the cross
no light for my eyes

The harsh reality
the Messiah dying
how could this be right;
he was to save the people?

On this day,
this dark Friday
more than all others
where oh God is our hope
when Christ died on the cross?

Running from Jerusalem

Nothing for me here
not being one of the twelve
at the center of his ministry
believing he was the one
the Messiah the prophets foretold

But what now,
with him captured
tried and convicted
sentenced to death
upon the cross

Running from Jerusalem
into the countryside
away from the city of David
corruption all around

Darkness falling,
even at midday
Jesus dying,
the curtain ripped
all I see is despair.

Gathering Shadows

The words of the master
changing the Seder
words of the night before
of his suffering and dying
all too real on the morrow
the new day turned to night

The gathering shadows
evil stalking the savior
the powerful corrupt
sending our Lord to the cross

Darkness at noon
in the darkening shadows
the sky turned to night
the sun refusing to shine
while our master hung there dying
the light of the world
heading for the stone cold tomb

His Courage and Fidelity

In the midst of our sadness
at our bewilderment of the necessity
the story of his suffering
his death upon the cross
At the heart, the center
unlike the disciples, deserting him,
betraying, denying knowing Jesus
Christ’s own example
his courage and fidelity
strengthened through prayer and his trust
in the sovereignty of God

Christ’s path to the cross
the hill of Calvary
began before his birth, in heaven
a servant to God’s plan
Descending to the flesh
to walk the earth as man
come for this moment
to redeem us as only he can
returning us to the master
part of the family
beloved children of God

The Shroud of Darkness

The shroud of darkness
over the earth
the sun would not shine
Christ hanging on the cross
dying alone and in pain

The lamb upon the altar
his life poured out
his spirit slipping away
before he cried out
his dying words to God

Forsaken by the Lord
his face turned from Christ
alone upon the cross
the Messiah breathed his last

The curtain ripped
the holy of holies exposed
the dead rose in that moment
Christ died on the cross
the cost of all of our sin
paid in full for all
by his grace alone
forgiven

Stripped utterly
wearing a crown of thorns
naked, dying
feeling wholly alone

In the darkness of midday
the sun refusing to shine
Christ upon the cross
atoning for our sin
his sacrifice washing them away

Shouting, crying
a final plea to God
abandoned and alone
crying out his last

The curtain ripped
the ground shaking
awareness at the foot of the cross
comprehending what was lost
Emmanuel, the Messiah

Stripped of his clothing
soldiers drawing lots
while he was yet dying
the signs of his scourging
his blood in rivulets falling
all over his body
wearing a crown of thorns

The king of the people dying
having chosen to climb the cross
faithful to the master
becoming a slave to his purpose
paying the ultimate cost
dying on the altar
an offering of love
to set us free from our sin

Darkness fell on the land
as the savior hung on the cross
quiet on Golgotha
until Christ cried out after three
and the curtain was ripped in two

All that afternoon
darkness beginning at noon
as his life slipped away
all of heaven cried out
darkness filling the sky

When he breathed his last
crying out to God
the ground shook
and the stones moved
none standing as before
just as he had foretold

A Very Different Parade

No cries of hosanna
no hail to the king
palm boughs not waving
no sound of singing
greeting the Lord

Shouts and jeers
“crucify him,” “blasphemy”
when he spoke the truth
The crowds now taunting him
when he carried the cross to the skull

Angry and confused
the people as Christ walked by
the struggle to carry the cross palpable
going to be crucified
on this day that Jesus died

This Good Friday

In the darkness of this hour
hard to call this day Good
for Christ died this afternoon
nailed upon a cross
the innocent lamb
killed as a criminal

Yet, in my heart, though hurting
joy too, as I remember
that this path, this moment
fulfilling God’s plan
by Christ’s humble servanthood

God came to the earth
to teach of his love,
to heal the sick and down-hearted,
but also to suffer and die
that we may life again

This act of selflessness
going to the cross
to die for each of us
grace beyond my comprehension
to bring a smile to my face
even in this day of pain
because of his love for us

Blood of the lamb
poured out onto the ground
spread on the horns of the altar
as in the ages of old
the ordinances for the tabernacle
for the people of God

Blood of the lamb,
the sacrifice, poured out for us
on the rock of the skull
his body on the altar of the cross
blood spread on the horns, the arms
falling to the ground
washing away all of our sin

On the Night of His Betrayal - edited

The meal, the Seder

the breaking, the sharing

Centuries of Tradition - edited

In the rote of the ritual
centuries of tradition
following the words
of the story long ago

The story of this people
chosen by the creator
delivered from the pharaoh
led to the promised land

All of this changed
a new people created
in the words of the Christ
in the upper room that night

Symbols changing
gaining new meaning
the bread his broken body
and the wine the blood of the lamb

Joining the Christ-child
the man who would suffer
the disciples who would betray,
deny and desert him

So we, just as unworthy

In this moment
the crucible of time
Christ turning himself over

In gathering, solemn

Partaking of His Resurrection

In following the Christ
walking with him this week
made holy by his submission
following the will of God

Partaking of his resurrection
in dying with him
rising from the grave
freed from death and sin

Lovingly walking,
humbly yoked to our savior
picking up the towel
tucking it in our waist

Going as he sends us
out into this troubled world
to help our neighbor
to share his loving word

Being merely the gloves
the skin alone of our master
being his hands and feet
doing our master’s work

Living with Christ
his spirit indwelling within us
offering hope to one another

The Towel at Our Waist

Following his example
our Lord and master
becoming a servant
humble before other men

Serving one another
walking humbly
taking his example
what he offered
becoming like Christ

Offering ourselves
our lives, our all
giving to others
any act serving
no matter how small,
if done in his holy name

The towel at our waist
marking us as servants
carrying on our master’s work
going out into the world
sent as he was sent
following the will
of our father, our God

Christ Serving Me

Sitting at the table
waiting for the Passover
sitting in the city of David
preparing for the feast

The wonder of Sunday
the palms and the hosannas
the work of this week
rumors all around

With my friend in the room
borrowed from a stranger
gathered with the master
remembering the exodus

But here is the master
a towel at his waist
washing the feet of my brothers
coming next to me

Looking down
at my Lord,
as he pours the waters
lovingly caressing
washing me clean

Christ serving me
when he is my master
his humble service to me
powerful, hard to comprehend

Stunned into silence,
listening to his words offered
explaining what he did
and how we must live

Serving one another
humbly, a servant
no one better
all deserving of grace

Sacrificially

Giving, as a servant
sacrificially offering
an example of Christ
like the washing of their feet

Giving of ourselves
our gifts and our talents
offering our lives
to another when there is need

Being as the Christ
humble, a servant
following the call of God
lovingly giving aid

Comfort and hope
help for the needy
little acts of kindness
in service to the Lord

Any Act

Any act,
serving one another
foot washing the servants
as a servant of God
Following his example
the master the servant
washing our feet
so that they would be clean
Living for these moments
sacrifice and offering
lovingly giving
our all for one another
faithful, reverent
lovingly, holy
emulating our God
