Give more of what you receive

Give out of your abundance
that which you have been given
that which you have received
Give of what you have receive
not for you but for others
we are given gifts in this life
to be used to help our neighbors

With the Abundance I have received

I should give, I should share,
I should shout, Hosanna
with the abundance I have received
so should I give, freely, richly
from the depth of my heart
as Christ gave for us
giving as I have received
blessed to bless others in this life
here for a purpose
to be Christ’s light in the world

Wealth is not a blessing, wealth is a test

Wealth is not a blessing
more things of this earth
accumulating, storing
our treasure, our reward
All of this a curse
an indictment against us
to be used as it is given
blessed to be a blessing

Wealth is a test
the things of this earth
they can be a blessing
or they can be a curse
a curse if we hold them
a blessing if we give
as richly as we have been given
so others may simply live

Criminal to live cautiously

It is criminal to live cautiously
when we have been so richly blessed
our cup runneth over
pouring down on us
So many gifts, such blessing in life
we should be sharing
God’s message and his light

not being timid
putting our gifts to work

work to do with our gifts
ways we can serve

Given according to our abilities

Given by God, gifts to use
talents, interests,
ways to serve in our world
Given according to our abilities
to do good in the world
an investment, a harvest

Knowing the rest of the prayer

Starting in anguish
in words of abandonment
feeling separated from God
wondering where he is
But Christ not despairing
not truly feeling forsaken
for his act was one of faith
a turning to God
Knowing the rest of the words
of the ancient prayer, the psalm,
murmuring the words
even as he hung dying
The words unfolding
in the way of his death
yet an act of a faith
a turning unto God.

When Christ despaired

When Christ felt abandoned,
forsaken, when Christ despaired
a simple act of faith
Christ raised up this prayer
My God, My God,
why have you forsaken me,
yet the words of the ancient psalm
of hope, of victory
turning toward God
an act of faith
knowing he was answer
out of the depth of his grace

The Judge sentencing himself

To die, to die on the cross
the debt to be paid
or we will be lost
yet the judge sentencing himself
his son must die
to take on our sin
that we may fly
up from the grave
on eagle’s wings
but only if the King
paying our way

When Christ felt forsaken on the cross

When Christ felt forsaken on the cross
hanging on the cross
not cursing, not denying
praying to our God
the ancient words, the psalm
unfolding around him
despair turning to comfort
in the arms of our God
knowing the rest of the words
God’s coming to our aid
that is why he prayed.

The Judge taking the punishment

Unlike any earthly court
the defendant found guilty
sentenced to death
to die on the cross
violating the commands
the laws over them
yet they do not suffer
they do not die
Judge taking the punishment
for you and I,
going to the cross
an atoning sacrifice
the holy made sin
that we may live

Christ Proclaimed King

Getting what they asked for
Christ upon the cross
the threat to their power
cast to the lost
Christ proclaimed King
up on the sign
Pilate making them face
their sin, their crime

Just Capitalizing a Word

The Pharisees, the Sanhedrin
their firm grip on power
wanting to name that Christ
had claimed to be
“king of the Jews”

Pilate’s response,
his bold assertion
the speaking of truth
the word, “King”, on Christ’s sign
not something less than that

Pilate proclaiming, speaking
truth to their power
naming their crime
the Messiah sent to the cross
they were killing the Son of God

Christ’s sign spoke Truth

Pilate was not willing
to deny the Christ
to put their claimed offense
on the cross on which he was placed
They wanted to state he claimed to be
the king of the Jews;
but Pilate knew, somehow,
that Christ was the King of the Jews

The Godship of Christ

The Godship of Christ
his identity on the cross
King of the Jews
as was foretold
the Messiah upon our cross

Denied by the peoples
the Leaders of the Word
convicted on lying
when he spoke
the eternal word of Truth

It was the Pagan

It was the pagan
who acknowledged his divine Kingship
putting the placard on the cross
naming the Son of God
King of the Jews
not something watered down
while he worn a crown of thorns
his name was written down

Waving our palms

Standing on the roadside
the ancient city, Jerusalem
excitement building
Christ coming into view
waving my palm branches
joining Christ’s procession
into David’s city
my cloak at his feet
shouts of Hosanna
joy to see my Savior, my king
thoughts of the yoke of repression
soon to be set free

To make sense of her pain

Something of a calling
Christ’s joining of them together
John now the son to May
to offer her comfort
to make sense of her pain
sharing the Christ with her
the force of his teaching
why he had to die
how he is the Son of God
How he gives us new life.

Pilate confronting Jesus
seeking to get him to answer
challenging him with his words
the power to free him
or to have him crucified
to send him to the cross
yet Christ disclaiming this power
his to give up
He is God immortal
Lord of heaven and earth

We were joined at the cross

In a real sense, like Mary and John
So for Ruth and myself
we were joined at the foot of the cross
by the same saving grace of Jesus

In our study together
God’s revealing of His Word
his plan for our lives together
one family, one body, one love

Maybe His words were a bit different,
“Ruth, here is your brother, your husband;
Ray, here is your sister, your wife;”
but the words were just as powerful
here in our walk, this life

A blessing in the way of joining
the physical and spiritual aspects of our lives
together one family
in the love of Christ,
grace poured out on the cross

The kingdom come near

Denied by the leaders,
the priests in the line of Aaron
those who were to shepherd the flock
leading to oblivion
The words of John at the Jordan
of Christ at the beginning
the kingdom come near
God here with us
the echo of these words before Caesar
their words of indictment
“we have no king but Caesar;
now Crucify the Christ!”

No earthly king

The leaders, the priests
denying Christ
claiming loyalty to Caesar
tears in the courts of God
the treachery of these leaders
forgetting the love of God
his provision for this people
the time when there was no earthly king
when God alone was their sovereign

Before Saul

Disclaiming God
allegiance to Caesar alone
no other king
forgetting God’s thorn
his place in the lives of this people

The leaders blaspheming
sinning against God
forgetting the time before Saul
the Lord God the only King
He was their all in all

Violating Commandments

Seeking to kill the Christ
the Son of the Living God
denying the Kingship of God
their faithfulness a sham
Standing outside the palace
the canard to stay ritually clean
yet they were violating Commandments.
They would not be clean.

A Curse against God

Denying the kingship of God
disclaiming the divinity of Christ
standing outside the palace
not wanting to be unclean
yet their words all that was needed
making themselves unclean
a curse against God
making Caesar their king,
mired in the earth
Christ’s blood upon their hands
