If we truly listen to this word
the power of his life
breaking the grip of the oppressors
not by the sword
but with his sacrifice
A humble Messiah
the lamb and the shepherd
walking as a servant
upon the earth
freeing us through the cross
The same Spirit guiding us
living inside as Christ
leading us on our walk
following all of our days
the servant way of the cross
Not by force or might
seeking treasures here below
rewards in heaven above instead
at the end of our days
Sharing Christ’s message of hope
the glory of our king
the fulfillment of promises of old
all by the depth of God’s love

Healing Our Sight
So much more than physical
our walk upon this earth
lives conformed to him
doing our master’s work
Healing our sight
our understanding of the law
able to see God
his love for you and me
Coming to the lowly stable
a life using his hands
walking as the Spirit led
becoming the lamb
Following the master’s plan
that we would hope in him
brining good news to the poor
by faith rising with him

Empowered to Speak
Christ, from the wilderness
after the tempting
going throughout the land
spreading his message of love
In his hometown, going
rising in the synagogue
sharing words of the prophet
come to life before their hearing
Empowered to speak
by the same Spirit
God descending
bodily on him
On we too falling
tongues of fire
the Spirit indwelling
a fire burning within our hearts
Commissioned and sent
we like our shepherd
emboldened to speak
to share the love of God

When We Come
When we come
petitions, prayers to God
not understanding
asking why
Humbly coming
because we are of clay
the stuff of the earth
made by his loving hands
Not worthy on our own
by our works made right
coming because of the Christ
who living and died for us
Saved only by grace
the love of God for man
not by our piety
only by the blood of the lamb

Someone to Gather Stones For
I can remember her voice
talking on the phone
watching me, starting to place
a ring of stones
around the base of the trees
Describing in this, for him,
the nature of love
someone to gather stones for
doing what is in another’s heart
sharing the work of our hands

Leaving to God to Judge
His story so familiar
in trying to live in piety
when we fall into the trap
of judging ourselves
Forgetting our feet of clay
our distance from God
trying to be wise on earth
to see our righteousness
worthy, before God
Instead, we should walk
more humbly on the earth
leaving to God to judge
our righteousness, our worth
Lucky, more than Job
able to see the example
the life of our risen savior
on earth as a servant
going to the cross for us
Walking more humbly
called to love our neighbor
following our shepherd
sharing his message
to the ends of the earth

Letting Others Judge
Not that he tried to live right
claiming his righteousness
not letting others be the judge
confidently assessing himself
In reading his story
the arguments with his friends
Job calling himself holy
the source of the things from God
Failing to truly be humble
a little too sure of himself
blessed only by God’s goodness
not by the works of his life

Too Confident
Calling himself righteous
a little too confident
that he was blessed
by his walk
not by the grace of God
The words of his arguments
setting himself a little higher
as if his feet weren’t of clay
measuring himself worthy
righteous before God

Listening to the Spirit
The struggle in this life
listening to the Spirit
the love of God
in the sacrifice of Christ
Sent to this earth
the lamb, the king
going to the cross
so we would rise with him
The voice of God
the Spirit within us
guiding our walk
if we submit to him

That we would listen
Oh that we would listen
to the voice of God
to his lessons in scripture
in the life of Christ
and in the Spirit living within us
That we would be guided
in our walk on this earth
as the Spirit would lead us
yoked to Christ
showing God’s love
for all our fellow man
Bringing God’s promise
the coming of the kingdom
peace from all warring
healing to the nations
witnesses to the ends of the earth
to the love of God

Love to Set the Captives Free
Love to set the captives free
such is God’s grace
sent from heaven above
Christ walking with us
Dying for our sin
as the prophets foretold
going to the grave
rising on the third day
The same Spirit living
now as on Pentecost
descending like a dove
filling us with love
Going as he was sent
to set the captives free
sharing the good news of God’s love
bringing us back to him

With the Spirit’s Power
Transformed,
no longer timid,
unknown disciples
like the shepherd before us
infused with the Spirit’s power
Changed for God’s service
taking on the yoke of scripture
fulfilling the prophets’ calling
going out into the world
The Spirit guiding
speaking from within us
changed forever
ablaze, going
messengers of God’s love

So far from Christ’s lesson
If we heed the Spirit
calling us from within
if we are truly yoked to our Savior,
our brother, our king
So much of the world’s problems
hatred and strife
oppression and anger
would surely melt away
The world struggles
so far from Christ’s lesson
conflict and poverty
clouding our sight
So simple if we listen
the guiding of the Spirit
loving our God and our neighbor
walking humbly, a servant,
a lamb of our shepherd’s flock

Warring with our brothers
Warring with our brothers
hate for our fellow man
so much unlike Christ
what he came to earth to say
Loving our neighbor
part of the his holy commands
humbly before our God
the works of his hands
Struggles in this life
when we stray from him
needing to conform our lives
to the Spirit speaking within

By Means of the Spirit
As with the Christ
empowered by God
by means of the Spirit
able to do the work of the Lord
Loving our neighbors
as was always planned
bringing the good news
God’s love for man
So simple is the message
so hard in this life
only by the Spirit
able to be like Christ
Being the hands and feet
the voices of Christ in this time
witnesses to his love
for all our fellow man

For this Reason
For the purpose of the king
for this reason he came to earth
a message of love
brought down from the Lord
Here to save us
new eyes for the blind
to see God’s nature
his love abiding
Setting us free
of the wages of our sin
redeeming us, giving us life
dying, rising with him

Washed for this Purpose
Out of the waters
washed for this purpose
the Spirit descending

Power of the Spirit

sent like the Christ

Missionaries, servants
like Christ before us guided
by the Spirit led, sent
to help set the captives free

Fulfilling a Promise of Old
Christ came into the world
the trinity as man
to bring good news to the poor
part of the father’s plan
Coming to save
to set the captives free
bringing truth, to let the blind see
the nature of God made known
Letting the oppressed,
the poor and downtrodden
know the rest of God’s design
to bring us home to him again
Dying for us, that we would be free
unbound by the chains of sin
guided in our walk by the Spirit within
that we would rise with him

to bring Good News to the poor
Commissioned as he was
baptized like him with the Holy Spirit
like a dove descending,
the flames alighting on us
changing us forever
the Spirit dwelling within
Like him we are sent
to bring good news to the poor
to set the captives from of their sin
by his sacrifice, his grace
the lamb upon the cross,
all of humanity restored

Not Pleading Our Case
Thinking about the words of his friends
arguing with Job about God
telling him to be humble
not to come before God
demanding an audience
Not pleading our case
trying to claim to be righteous
over and over again
when we are so humble
and he is the creator of all
Calling instead for his mercy
his grace to be poured out
unmerited love from our king
humbly accepting our trials
along with the gifts of God
For he is able to bring good
though we may not see this
working beyond our comprehension
healing us in God’s way
and making us whole in God’s time

Speaking for Us
The breath, the Spirit, God within us
speaking when we cannot find words
trembling in our spirits alone
calling from within, to our heavenly king
Speaking for us, out of our musings
words for the creator, for God
the advocate walking with us
on this road, this mortal coil
God answering, sometimes in ways unexpected
hearing the callings of our prayers
our petitions brought to him
spoken and unspoken
laid before our king

Where Else Can We Turn
Nowhere but thee Lord

This Side of the Kingdom
Yes, walking with our savior
the one who healed the lame
the one who suffered and died
that we may live again
Serving as I am able
using gifts, heaven sent
spreading a message of love
hope for me and you
This side of the kingdom, though
still upon this trouble earth
the pain and strife of this world
no love for our fellow man
Needing to call on that Spirit
especially in these days
where war and oppression stalk the earth
and pain is all to profound
That Spirit, that power
born on Pentecost
steeling all of our hearts
to continue our master’s work
Healing where we are able
by the intoning of his loving name
acting as his messengers
that the kingdom may come

Calling on His Spirit
Calling on God’s Spirit
living inside of me
answering his calling
choosing to serve for thee
When I look out the window
the wonders all around
knowing you are with me
all the days of my life
The example of his service
your amazing grace
poured out for all of us
the whole human race
Fulfilling the prophecy
the promise to the people of old
that you would come to save
just as had been foretold

the helper deep inside
guiding each of our steps

answering our shepherd’s call
calling on His Spirit

living inside of me
answering his calling
choosing to serve for thee
When I look out the window
the wonders all around
knowing you are with me
all the days of my life
The example of his service
your amazing grace
poured out for all of us
the whole human race
Fulfilling the prophecy
the promise to the people of old
that you would come to save
just as had been foretold
Yet more than this,
the helper deep inside
guiding each of our steps
along this path of life
Going where you would lead

The Musings of Our Hearts
Hearing when words are unspoken
even when they will not come
God walking beside us
hearing the musings of our hearts
Able to hold and to guide us
redeeming us from our sin
his grace upon us
leading us, ever, still

From the bellow of the ship
In the words he didn’t understand
the pain they were suffering
his hand upon their sorrow
leading him to you
Coming to turn around
his life changing our own
adding words of your grace
to the melody of their souls
God hears us from our deepest yearnings,
even when words don't come.
Such is our master’s grace
He hears the melody in our hearts.

A Coolness this Morning
After days in the eighties and nineties
a coolness this morning
the grip of the heat gone
the dew heavy on the ground
My sandaled feet wet
running alongside them
the race to the school on
no worrying about sweat

Calling on His Strength
Not asking for strength
to push through the pain
the struggles of our day to day
the walk upon this earth
Not seeking the strength
that already was given
the reservoir in my spirit
to help me on my way
Calling on His strength
yoked by my side
able to walk only with him
through the shadows of this life

Choosing to Serve
His life as our model
through the pain, the struggles
the crushing realities of life
when there is nowhere else to turn
Relying on the Spirit
Christ living within us
the risen lord guiding our feet
helping us to follow his steps
Choosing to serve
as he did for us
going where we are led
to the ends of the earth
to spread his message of Love

we come to you on bended knees
we come to you on bended knees
more in our struggles than our joy
we come to you oh God
when we do not understand
when the world, our lives
are beyond our comprehension
when the trials are too much
tragedy unexpected, sudden
bringing us to the cross
help me to lean on you
that I would be yoked to you
conforming my steps to yours
doing your work
it is then that I feel closest
a sense of inner calm
in you alone am I able
to walk on this journey
to face the world around

Answers to Our Prayers
Not always what we ask for
sometimes incremental
other times saying no
(later we may understand)
As in all things,
God’s ways are not our ways
the answers to our prayers
are made in God’s own time
Mysteries that continue
beyond our comprehension
yet coming before the Lord
because he alone can answer
The deepest musings of our souls
sometimes when no words can come
our rock and our redeemer
we come to you on bended knees

Needing Your Strength
Needing Your strength, oh God
each and every day
not just when crisis hits
on my walk here below
Needing your with me
the Spirit beating within
walking yoked with my brother
able to go as I am called
Serving as I am able
with the gifts you alone give
spreading your message of love
crying deep from within

Reaching for God
In the disquiet of our spirit
when we know we cannot handle
the struggles of this life alone
reaching out for God
In our prayers and in our daily walk
searching for the divine
trying to feel your presence
come close to me, oh God
I need your strength, your comfort
to feel your loving hand
be with me day to day
I pray to thee, my Lord

A Drunken Dancer
Like a drunken dancer
trying to catch a mate
rejected by those on the sidelines
moving from place to place
Wobbling in the air
not sure of the footing
moving from blossom to blossom
trying to alight
Staggering even in stillness
the air dead calm
nothing but its own desire
driving it fitfully on
Going as instinct leads
from flower to precious flower
hurtling on the still breezes
search for nectar so sweet
May 27, 2010

The Stagger of the Bumblebee
Like a drunk who had a bit too much
or maybe the dance of the scarecrow
the uncut scenes of Oz
so long, so long ago
The stagger of the bumblebee
as if on toddler legs
lurching from bloom to bloom
finding little peace
Such urgent work
they must be on
never stopping to enjoy
the beauty of each bloom
no rest for those in flight

Not Ready to Say Goodbye
Not ready to say goodbye
their lives loosed from this mortal coil
going to return to our king
before we are ready for them to go
Fear in the circle, the family
when sickness, pain comes
that something will be too much to bear
guiding them from our arms
Too many years yet undone
so many memories we want to share
all happening in the timing of God
struggling that it is out of our hands

A Starling Coming to Rest
Was it a starling coming to rest
on the front porch light
rising from drinking
from the gutter above the porch
hearing the cooing of the mourning dove
Walking back to the house
from the driveway
a conversation with a friend
the morning coming to life
under a sky of gray and white

Witnesses to His Power
As he walked the earth
the disciples of John
sent to see him there
to ask him who he was
Was he the one foretold
the Messiah come to earth
walking as a many
to give us eternal birth
Witnesses to his power
healing the sick, the lame
offering God’s message of love
for this is why he came
Telling the whole world
of the coming of our king
who died and rose for us
so that we all may live

Proclaiming His Name
As his disciples
as those who claim him as our brother
the sheep of his eternal flock
sent into the world
proclaiming his name
as the first ones did
a healing presence
his name alone, Jesus,
bringing us back to God

And He is the Potter
When we come to God
petitioning our of our pain
our lack of understanding
the whys of life with no answers
remembering we are the clay
and He is the potter
knowledge and power we do not have
He alone fathoming
the mysteries we cannot
shaping us with his hands
guiding us in this life
petitioning our of our pain
our lack of understanding
the whys of life with no answers
remembering we are the clay
and He is the potter
knowledge and power we do not have
He alone fathoming
the mysteries we cannot
shaping us with his hands
guiding us in this life
