after the meal, the Seder,
after words of the new covenant
leaving the upper room
drawing close to midnight
as we walked across the sleeping city
to the garden, Gethsemane
Christ told us to stay awake,
to watch for the coming evil
unable to stay and watch
our flesh tired, weak
not able to stay awake
while Christ prayed in the garden
His sweat like blood falling
into the hungry earth,
when He drank of that cup.
we failed Him, our Master,
when Christ needed us most
unable to stay awake
in the garden that night
too tired, sleepy,
after the Passover Seder
falling asleep in the garden
while our Master prayed.
