from the upper room to the Mount of Olives

journeying with Jesus
in silence walking
coursing through the city
that Passover night
like no Passover
since the night in Egypt
a new blood covenant
spoken that night
from the upper room
through the sleeping city
where David had ruled
over God’s people
journeying in silence
walking in sorrow
the betrayer fled into the night.

journeying across the city
so much history of their people
in each step that they took
returning to the Mount of Olives
a place he regularly went
a place to pray, to be near to God
leaving the upper room
across the Kidron Valley
across from the Temple
the seat of their power
journeying to the garden,
Gethsemane
bowing to pray,
“take this cup from me,”
but submitting in the garden,
“Thy will be done.”
