each time, a row of them,
those asking for money
cups in outstretched hands
reaching for us, calling,
wanting to give, to be
faithful
but a thought, a wondering
if
the cash I try to give them
will buy drugs somehow
a challenge for us,
disciples,
trying to be like Jesus
wondering what He would do
and what His call is to us
do we give to all of them
what do we give to those
asking
do we give until we have
nothing
until we are like them
something about these
questions
sounding vaguely like Judas
when he questioned the act
of Mary
pouring out the nard
or of the widow’s offering
giving her last two coins
or of the widow using her
oil, her flour
feeding the prophet Elijah
trusting in God to provide
that the oil, the flour
would never go empty
that God will yet provide
