A break in the heat
away from the front,
in the lee of the storm;
No thunder, no lightning,
just rain, warm rain
falling near dusk.
Falling on eager ground,
steaming blacktop,
onto hungry plants,
upon my skin.
All thirsty, parched,
turning toward the clouds;
Cooling, soothing rain.
Splashing in sudden puddles.
Catching in open screens
that certain smell,
coming inside;
Filling the house
with the freshness
of summer rain.
