like the others
seated on the curb, some in chairs
as the bands marched by
Standing when they passed
the ones who fought for us
carrying our country’s colors
for which so many paid the cost
The full measure of their sacrifice
in the words on the radio
memories of loved ones lost
in distant lands, some long ago
Stopping to honor
those who fought and died
those who came home again
some fighting for us still.
