sermon, "Forgive Me Lord, Remember Me", by Raymond A, Foss, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten, ME, Feburary 25, 2018, Second Sunday in Lent

Sermon February 25, 2018
Forgive Me Lord, Remember Me
Raymond A. Foss
Psalm 22:23-31
Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16
Luke 23:39-43

Let us pray.
Lord Jesus, may these words I share be your words, not my own; may they be pleasing in your sight. And it is in your name I pray these things. Amen

===========

Good Morning. My name is Dismas, but you probably know me as the Good Thief. I was one of the two thieves that the Romans crucified beside Jesus, the Christ. You may not recognize me fully, because I am wearing clothes.

Normally statues and other depictions of me show me with only a loincloth and holding my cross. It is way too cold up here in Patten for that.

I’d like to talk with you about those words that _________ just read from the Gospel of Luke, the exchange I had with Christ as we were dying today.

Gestas, the other thief, wasn’t in the same mindset as me. His demons were working overtime; he was angry, fighting against his fate. He was caught up with the Pharisees and the Sadducees, the Sanhedrin mocking Christ on the cross.

39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

Gestas did not believe. He saw only the present. He, like me, had just seen Barabbas freed. Barrabas was a murderer and he was given life and here we were, common thieves, being crucified next to Jesus.

Man, fate was having it’s way with us. We had seen the crowds shouting “Hosanna!” last Sunday and we were in our jail cells, the cisterns where we were held, as the crowd shouted “Crucify!” this morning. We heard the shouts of the soldiers mocking him and we heard the cries of Jesus as he was scourged.

We were here beside Jesus the whole time, walking the same way with him as he had fallen, as Simon had been pressed into service to carry Christ’s cross when he could no longer. We had carried the cross bars, this part of the cross along side him. We too had been nailed to the tree here on Golgotha, the Place of the Skull.

40 But the other (that’s me) rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.”

We were sentenced according to the law. Maybe it was a harsh law, no matter. We knew the risks we took when we stole. We got caught. We were not innocent. We were justly punished under the law. We were guilty, breaking the law of Rome and the Ten Commandments, the law of our people, the Law of Moses. We had violated a commandment. “Thou Shall Not Steal”. We had to die.

But this man, Jesus, was something completely different than we were. He had healed and preached throughout the countryside. He has healed Lazarus. He had raised him from the dead.

He had come into Jerusalem and he had overturned the table of the moneychangers in the Temple. He had been sentenced by an unjust court unjustly. He had stood before Pilate, who is no friend to any Jew, and even Pilate found no fault in him. The names above his head on the cross testified to that.

And then today, I heard everything he had said here on the cross, as he was praying the Psalms between his gasps for breath. I heard him pray the Psalm that Ray read earlier, that part of Psalm 22, verses 23-31. Christ kept talking with God, kept praising God, kept invoking his relationship with God while he hung here.

He asked God to forgive even the soldiers who were killing him, the soldiers who were casting lots for his clothes. I heard him say, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Such mercy, such forgiveness, such self-sacrifice overwhelmed me. He wasn’t talking to God like I ever did, not that my life was defined by prayer. He was praying to God like a child would speak to a loving parent, praying for others too, in a sense for all of us.

I had never heard anything like it in my life. I lived in much more of a dog eat dog kind of existence, living by my wits, trying to take what I needed, not thinking of others, certainly not forgiving others, especially not these Romans who just nailed me to my cross.

I was no believer before I came to my cell, before we came to this place, to Golgotha. I was never baptized in the Jordan. I sure hadn’t repented of anything.

But I had seen and listened to the events as they unfolded last night and this morning and throughout today. Something was very different about this man. Was he the one, the Messiah, the one to free our people. I saw his disciples with his mother at the foot of his cross, hidden too in the shadows, not wanting to be caught.

I believed in these moments that He was the Messiah, the one foretold in scripture, the one who was to save our people. Somehow I knew he was going to heaven and this was my one chance. He could redeem me. That he alone could give me life, even as I was dying.

42 Then I said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

I believed; I had faith. I cried out to God on the cross beside me.

43 Christ replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Do you hear what he said to me? Do you hear this promise?  I would not see Sheol, the place of the dead. I would not die forever. I would rise with him to Paradise! Today!

Amen, thank you Lord Jesus to this answer to my prayer.

Oh no, here come the soldiers with their spears, their mallets; I guess I will see you on the other side!

(set down the cross)

=====================

This passage of scripture, this exchange between the Good Thief and Christ has so much hope in it for us, for everyone. Dismas hadn’t done anything to earn his salvation.

He had not been baptized, except by the blood of our Lord Jesus. He hadn’t repented really. He had already been judged. And yet, Christ granted it freely.

He truly was saved by grace, through his sudden belief in Christ. He was like Abram who because Abraham when he believed, when he too was saved by his belief, his faith in God.

Dismas, unlike Abraham, had been judged guilty under the Law of Moses. He was right, he was sentenced justly.  Abraham lived before the Law but Dismas was under the law.

God made a way through Jesus beside him on the cross, to redeem this active sinner, at the last possible minute, as he was dying the horrible death of crucifixion. He believed and he asked for salvation.

And God in His mercy granted that request with the most powerful promise of them all, “Today you will be with me in Paradise!”

In these remaining weeks of Lent, may we seek redemption through the risen Christ as we journey toward the cross.

Amen.
