Miss Wendy! Miss Wendy!
our three peal out across the driveway,
down the corridor, down the pew
using outside voices where inside would do
Suddenly happier than the instant before
A joy to see her, cling to her
be with her,
sit on her knee,
under the comforting crook of her arm
(if someone else’s child isn’t there yet)
Essential mother to so many
who will miss her
in ways big and oh so small
Hands to wrap their own,
so little it seems sometimes,
strong yet gentle
Safe with Miss Wendy
their teacher, their confidante,
Their friend.

Popcorn Experiment
College was wasted on the lot of us
at least in that moment
or maybe it was the intoxication
of a rainy night in the dorm
freshmen year, or maybe the next,
an experiment that shouldn’t have been started
gone horribly wrong
A round electric popcorn popper
sat innocently on the shelf in his room
a bunch of mad scientists
a motley band
decided to take it out for a test
the domed hood was left where it lay
this was a night for risk
let Caution heed her own wind
Who needs a drop cloth?
What could go wrong?
a liberal pool of oil
a pile of corn
A spark of electricity
a round of Molson
And abracadabra
presto-chango
Mayhem and mirth
We had a blast in the moment
dodging hot kernels and fluffy missiles
We had our fun
But a dorm damage bill
awaited each of us
for the BIG round grease stain
that may still be there
Hope mom doesn’t read this
and remember that bill…

Fruit Flies
He was a real lady killer
a women’s man
for sure
an entomologist in training
he had fruit flies
growing, in the dark,
in his desk drawer
living on a poultice
of past-ripe banana
Yum

Backwash Worms
Have you ever stood in backwash worms?
Worms and night crawlers that come
to the surface of your yard?
when you empty the diatomaceous earth filter?
of your backyard pool?
I have.
And I still remember
Thirty years later
Squish.

Snowflake
She was white, all white
except where she was pink
soft, cute, and she liked leaf lettuce
Her name was Snowflake
the pretty clear albino bunny
that ate the pink insulation
under the refrigerator
in the corner of the kitchen
She had to go

Without Hindrance
Paul was in Rome, under house arrest
but he received guests, without hindrance,
so ends the book of Acts;
but it is the story of Acts, the sharing,
of unpredictable stars,
milquetoasts who gain spines,
power emboldened disciples speaking
in unknown tongues near and far
of early believers,
a persecutor made proselytizer
of missionaries and martyrs
Giving all or dying for holding back
a time of communal living and squabble
but a moment of proclamation
over and over, without hindrance,
spreading the good news
to the ends of the earth
as eyewitnesses to the creation
the beginning of another age
of love and sacrifice,
of communion and peace
a renewed Eden
if we would just follow His path
but he received guests, without hindrance,
so ends the book of Acts;

power emboldened disciples speaking

Handbell Notes
Watching them play
Seeing their notes on the paper
Sensing the fun in practice
in hearing the sheet come alive
Feeling a shake ( )
Never realizing the joy
Captured in the dots and waves
on the printed page.

Last Sunday, the Sunday School students – pre-school to grade 5 - practiced the “Little Boy and the Lunch”, by Tammy Waldrop, about the feeding of the 5,000, along with our Handbell Choir. I was reading along to the program/sheet music. The techniques used by the handbell choir included – “Mallet , Pluck, Thumb Damp, Echo , Martellato Lift , Shake, Vibrato, Let Vibrate, Martellato”. To me, it made me giggle. It was Fun! Here is the web page for this the Little Boy and the Lunch - http://www.handbellworld.com/music/MusicPiece.cfm?Piece=11265
