The start of the revolution
from the left this time
not those in the system
beholden to masters
those on the margin
yet those believing
still that change will come
if we believe enough
going to the streets
refusing to be cowed
to be confused by the blather
the lies of those in powerful
unwilling to leave
to be back into the shadows
demanding their time
their voices to be heard
to stand for something
to say no, this time
to reach for tomorrow
a better world somehow
if they strike a cord, wisdom
will the whole scheme collapse
will they lose their hold on power
who will be left standing
who will be cast out

On the Verge of Something
On the verge of something,
some deeper meaning
rising in protest
out in the streets
seeking something,
compassion, community
wanting to feel part
of something more
not adrift, lost
a delusion, a dream
Lies to us, laughing deception
the rulers, the vassals
those who claim power
themselves puppets
marionettes on the stage
pawns of the brokers
those really in power
laughing in the backrooms
until they see the protest
like the Arab Spring before this
not knowing where it will lead
if they strike a cord, wisdom
will the whole scheme collapse
will they lose their hold on power
who will be left standing
who will be cast out

Ripples of Our Actions
As a chalice poured
as stones cast
into a still pool
our words, our deeds
all of our lives
Ripples of our actions
spreading through time
a witness to our believing
what we hold dear
revealing our hearts
the guiding of our path
unfolding, spreading
over the sands of our time

Our salvation, redeeming
not by our efforts

embodied, living

poured out, cleansing
cleaning our whole lives

We wait for the blessed hope
Our lives now guided
by God’s sound teaching
in love and grace given
by the teachings of Christ
we wait for the blessed hope
the promise of his coming
returning to this earth
to bring us home to God
for now disciples
walking here in love
filled with his teaching
our walk in this life
Mindful of his sacrifice
his body, his blood
given to redeem us
from our past, wickedness
making us whole, worthy
through the gate of the cross
bringing us to heaven
our place in paradise

Teach Them - 2
Offer them instruction
teach them from sound doctrine
from the well of God’s love
how to truly live
temperate, balanced
worthy of respect
elders revered
given real value
controlled and balanced
in their walking
in their own living
conformed to the law
all of God’s teaching
able to share
from a firm foundation

In the Sands, the Street
In the halls of power,
in the stirrings of the people
in the sands, the Street
in the troubled nations
Revolution, protest
by their (our) own people
rallying in anger
wanting to be free
The same spirit moving
hope in their marching
in gathering together
one candle feeding another
Work to be done
to marshal the forces
the groundswell sweeping
across the sands of time
ripples forming
joining together
a wave which will change
the face of this earth
The sameness self-evident
yet the masters not believing
the same tide sweeping
onto these shores
Awake, the people
the same tide rising
justice will come
love for the whole world
the fight for the souls
the heart of this nation
as surely as the fight
in the oilfields,
the sands far way

The Lies They Fed Us
Those in power
conjuring a dream,
nightmare
the lies they fed us
finding nothing really there
Hope in the streets
true freedom from oppression
bound in the shackles
prisons of their making
chasing a dream
we were never was attaining
going, shouting,
seeking our real freedom
lies they fed us
ringing in our ears

getting poorer
The vast majority
almost all the people
on the brink, under
living underwater
getting poorer by each minute
bought into the pipe dream
holding on for dear life
not giving in to sorry
wanting to speak out
to join those in the street
crying out for freedom
for the things that tear us apart

We are not being heard
We are not being heard
the mass of the people
only the diehards
the extremes of our nation
only the wealthy
those who can buy power
they alone able
to grab the ear of justice
to turn the nation to them
to demand a seat at the table
all of the rest of us muzzled
denied our right to speak

partisan paralysis
tearing us apart
wars in the halls of power
mud over the ramparts
unabashed dissension
partisan paralysis
making points only
ignoring the people
hurting, dying
forgetting the nation
the land they represent
only bickering, fighting
scoring their points instead

They are not being heard
On the streets, to their feet
the dispossessed, us
all of the dreams
the debt, crush
family, set apart
the haves and the have nots
they are not being heard
the cries in the seats of power
displaced, estranged
tearing us apart

Lies they told us
Wondering when we got smarter
the lies falling flat
no longer believing
the lies they told us
the dream a nightmare
debt washing over us
drowning our daily lives
oppressed in dollars
as surely as they are
in the sins of the tyrants
reigning over them
in the lands in the Arab Spring
washing on these shores
the same cry for freedom
freedom evermore

always right to stand for basic human rights
We must be blind
not believing, so selfish
denying the injustice
greed stalking our land
No different than the Arab Spring
this Fall of Discontent
the powerful not yielding
to the people crying out
Always right to stand
for basic human rights
denied in the hypocrisy
the leaders with benefits
denying the people rights
as the profits roll on
climbing out of sight

calling on President Obama and the world
to act in the Middle East, especially in Libya and Bahrain,
to stand with the people
yearning to breathe free
and not worrying about the results,
that it is always right to stand for basic human rights
&
on the transformations since the beginning of January -
all the protests in Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Oman,
Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Palestinian Territories, Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, etc.

The Very Same Spirit
The same spark, foment
the crucible of injustice
lies to the people
dreams left in the dust
Greed, power
not good
setting peoples apart
are they blind to injustice
or have they merely hardened their hearts

Not making waves
Building the movement
the groundswell, the tide
not yet his time
not wanting to make waves
to wash through the temple
to expose his power
wanting to wait for God’s calling
to act in God’s time

Loosing the Winds of Freedom
Not just in the foreign lands
in the Maghreb, Arabia
the people bound, oppressed
all across the nations
the world smaller
loosing the winds of freedom
all manner of division
coming alive this season
the winds moving
across the whole world
fairness, freedom
justice the rallying cry
Martyrs and protest
people in the streets
unsure where it will lead
not knowing where it will end

Wall Street protests
------------------
Their Blood on Our Hands – part 1
Turning our blind eyes
away from the crisis
the murder of the peoples
mercenaries and martyrs
Their blood on our hands
because we fail to act
empty rhetoric of diplomacy
when they are dying in the street
What will history say
the mass graves of the martyrs
when the world stood by
as they were slaughtered in the streets
Giving them over
letting them fight by themselves
claiming the rights to be free
yet leaving them to die alone

What it does is evil
The world, power
what it does is evil
we should not follow
caught in its clutches
heeding, turning
yoked with Christ
following him always

Only One Sinner
Only the woman
those who followed
all of us as one
only the one sinner
heard the message
offered by Christ
only she was the one
who heard what followed
Christ told them to drop
each of their stones
for none of us worthy
to cast them at all
none of them stayed
all of them scattered
his message only
for the sinner with him
To repent, to change
to leave her life behind
to follow God’s message
all of her days
to walk humbly
a servant to all
to come to God worthy
at the end of the age

Like the Ten Lepers
A lesson incomplete
the healing of the leaders
dropping their stones in the dust
at the feet of Christ
not able to stone her
not one
Yet like the ten lepers
the woman alone
there with him
all alone
hearing the rest
to leave her life
like us in sin
all of her days
repent and be healed
be fully restored
none of them heard him
she alone

Convicted by not repenting
walking away only
dropping the killing stones
not throwing them at her
heeding the words of Christ
yet they stood convicted
convicted for not repenting

Repent of All
Christ speaking to her
not in judgment, mercy
not to just repent of adultery
but of a whole life of sin
repent of all
turn from the world
follow the commands of God
she alone heard him
the others gone away
none of us worthy
save for the grace of God
none of us redeemed
but for Christ’s sacrifice

writing in the dust
names on the wall,
written in the dust
the judgment of the Father
condemning all of us
Only if we judge
if we look in our own hearts
ceasing to judge the others
repenting of our own sin
walking as he commanded
by the law of our God
only in final judgment
will we be restored

Seeing Through the Eyes of Christ
Informed by his words for us
by his love, his sacrifice
offered for all of us
though we denied his name
Love came to us
through his mercy, his grace
teaching us how to love
to offer light to the world
Seeing him in the flesh
now in paradise
seeing now through the eyes of Christ
in his love, his sacrifice
Wanting all to be healed
to be brought to the feet of grace
to know the saving power of Christ
to be restored once more to God

Not from a worldly point of view
Seeing the world in his image
through the eyes of the risen Christ
seeing what we had not seen
changing the world around
Not from a worldly point of view
from the one who sacrificed
offering love to one and all
in response to the price he paid
Offering himself
on the altar of the cross
giving himself for all of us
that no one would be lost

No Right to Judge Her
Who are we
looking at our failings
our sin, before us
always, ever present
No right to judge
to kill our neighbor
all of us fallen
all of us clay
none better
all fallen
saved only
by the grace of God
we must drop
our stones before us
repenting as he called
as we walk away

No Right to Kill
Even when the commands
the law of God broken
his words heeded
the stones falling away
walking away convicted
the leaders, the elders

In Jesus’ Name
Acting as he would
as he taught us
going, as the first disciples
when he calls to us
Going as we are sent
the authority of Christ
speaking words of power
not words from us
Words of the Lord
spoken in Jesus’ name
healing in their power
for this he came
Sent forth in love
to proclaim his grace
walking with the Lord
that we may see God’s face

Over the Orange Cone
He didn’t know it
the worker gathering them up
a challenge for the children
for each one in turn
Walking to the van
following the leader
straddling the orange cone
barely clearing its top
good thing it was a short one
or they would have had to stop
following the leader
when the leader was too tall

Over the Orange Cone – v2

Over the Orange Cone
watching five kindergarteners and first graders
following the after school daycare worker
walking across the parking lot
following their leader
wherever he may go

heeding the Christ

the law given life

My teaching
my words, my teaching
not my own
given from him
who sent me
authority from God
given to me freely
to spread through the world
to live by his calling
the law, the word
to offer kindness
forgiveness of sin
to love one another
just as Jesus did

healing of the Sabbath
if they were honest
more than analogy
circumcision on the Sabbath
and healing on the Sabbath
both restoring to God
making a commitment
making them whole
healing on the Sabbath
just as the patriarchs did
sealing the covenant
making a promise to God
in the blood, in the sharing
in the connection with the divine
in the walk of our living

Teachings of He who sent me
My words, not my own
teachings of He who sent me
offering love, hope
for the whole world
grace raining down
offered in love
instruction for all
that all may give
given and shared
to the ends of the earth

The shackles of their faith
Bound by the word
of the law, in fragments
the shackles of their faith
blinding them for the signs
Unable to see
that he was the Christ
the prophecies foretold
lived out in him
alive, in the flesh
the fulfillment of all
only knowing in part
denying it all
that he could be born
according to the law
that he could live there
that he could come at all

Let him come to me and drink
The hungry, the thirsty
let him come to me and drink
of living waters
of truth that runs deep
He is the Christ
the one foretold
he is the living water
that never runs out
a stream, a fountain
a well of living water
offered to us
the thirsty, the week
come to him always
he will quench your thirst
offering us salvation
through the way of the cross

If today were the last day of my life
If today were the last day of my life
I would want to be sharing
using the gifts of words, of photos
sharing of God’s love
of the gifts I have received
what has been poured out on me
what has filled me to overflowing
as God has gifted me

Steve Job’s Commencement Address,
Stanford University, 2005
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc&feature=share
“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

Unsung Heroes
In the footnotes, end notes
bits of history
in the details
the forgotten moments
in unsung heroes of time
who left a mark
maybe separated, removed
the one who started the snowball
rolling down the hills
behind the scene, encouraging
germs on an idea
those whom we have forgotten
unsung heroes in time

Leaving a Mark
What if when we die
we get to see
to have our own cinema
sitting at God’s feet
our film, our journey
the Wonderful Life we led
what if we were able
to see the ripples we left
what if we read in the book of our life
all the lives we changed
not just those in the first person
not just face to face
what if the concentric circles
their descendants in time
all who were touched by our lives
were written there as well
What would that story be like
how thick would that book be
for someone so giving, so richly blessed,
someone who gave of themselves
to show others beauty
sharing a laugh or three
offering comfort in their pain
choosing joy instead
How many pages would there be
how many lives changed
for someone to see in paradise
sitting at God’s feet
how much laughter, joy
pouring from the heart of God
welcoming someone such as he
into the courts of eternity.

Follow Your Heart
Already naked, soon to be dead
don’t stumble, fall
letting others direct you
lead you down the wrong path
nothing to lose
no fortune, no fame
Follow your hearts
what you want to do
not some other choices
settling for the comfortable
someone else’s path
strive for what fulfills
for today may be your last

Leaving a Mark
What if when we die
we get to see
to have our own cinema
sitting at God’s feet
our film, our journey
the Wonderful Life we led
what if we were able
to see the ripples we left
what if we read in the book of our life
all the lives we changed
not just those in the first person
not just face to face
what if the concentric circles
their descendants in time
all who were touched by our lives
were written there as well
What would that story be like
how thick would that book be
for someone so giving, so richly blessed,
someone who gave of themselves
to show others beauty
sharing a laugh or three
offering comfort in their pain
choosing joy instead
How many pages would there be
how many lives changed
for someone to see in paradise
sitting at God’s feet
how much laughter, joy
pouring from the heart of God
welcoming someone such as he
into the courts of eternity.

Steve Job’s Commencement Address,

“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

Unsung Heroes
In the footnotes, end notes
bits of history
in the details
the forgotten moments
in unsung heroes of time
who left a mark
maybe separated, removed
the one who started the snowball
rolling down the hills
behind the scene, encouraging
germs on an idea

Already Naked
Our time measured
limited in this life
already known
that we will soon die
nothing to take
when we leave this earth
already naked
so we might as well love our work
what we put our hands to
the tug on our hearts
how we walk, joyful
as we walk on this earth

The Oldest First
Knowing their own hearts
hearing his words
the oldest first
but the rest
falling away
unable to stand
knowing they were unworthy

Only One Truly Healed
As it was with the ten lepers
all of them healed by Christ
all of them heard his teaching
felt his touch
Yet only one truly healed
restored by God
by acknowledging the source
the healing of God
So to with the story
of the woman and the leaders
though all heard Christ’s teaching
none of them were healed
they dropped their stones
knowing their own sin
yet none stayed, changed
repenting as he said
starting over again

None was worthy
None was worthy
to stone her
all guilty
worthy of death
yet none worthy
to stand in judgment
to condemn her to death

Into the Belly of the Earth
To be transformed
to save, to fulfill
needing to die
to enter in
into the belly of the earth
returning to dust
rising up in triumph
death with no sting
rising to heaven
oh let us rejoice
let the whole world sing

They Lowered Him
Not merely opening
the walls of the building
punching a hole
that he may enter in
They lowered him
to the feet of Jesus
so he may be healed
cleansed of his sin
They lifted him up
lowering him down
going with him
as he lay his burden down
knowing he needed
the love of the Lord
bringing him to the one
the one who could restore
Offering more
than a hole in the roof
lowering him down
to the foot of the Christ
standing, redeemed
by the one who bore the cross
healed, redeemed
by his love for all of us

My time is not here
So many times
the moment not ready
Christ demurring,
pulling back
his time not yet come
to heal, to sacrifice
still teaching
that we would change,
understand,
that we would see
God’s grace pouring down
on you and me
waiting for God’s time
to drink of the cup
in God’s time submitting
going to the cross

He went also
to honor the Father
not for his own glory
going in secret
not triumphant
to the courts
celebrating with the others
the feast of the Lord
faithful to God’s calling
living righteously
submissive as the lamb
